Chapter 8 - The Names on the Bracelets

Warren raised his weapon.

Mara did not flinch. “If I wanted you dead, Chief, you would never have reached the well.”

“Hands where I can see them.”

She obeyed.

Clara stood between Mara and Sienna. “Explain the ledger.”

Mara glanced at the infant bracelets. “Northstar's first experiments failed because the children were isolated. Voss learned that attachment, rivalry, and family pressure shaped talent better than laboratories. So she created family groups.”

“Three infants,” Clara said.

“Three genetically related subjects. One remained under direct observation. One entered a controlled household. One was exchanged with an unrelated child to test whether environment mattered more than blood.”

Sienna's face had gone white. “Which child was exchanged?”

“Infant C.”

“Clara was called Subject C.”

“Later,” Mara said. “The letters were reassigned to confuse anyone who discovered partial records.”

Clara hated how plausible that sounded.

Mara approached the cabinet slowly. “The bracelets are real, but the names were added years later. Margaret did not know which infant became which woman. She spent the rest of her life trying to find out.”

“Why do you have my face?” Clara asked.

“Because one of us was selected for reconstruction.”

Warren frowned. “Surgery?”

“Training, surgery, dental correction, voice work. Northstar needed an operative who could enter Clara's life if Commander Sterling ever turned against them.”

Sienna stared at Mara. “You let them erase your face?”

“They erased it before I was old enough to refuse.”

For the first time, anger broke through Mara's calm.

Clara lowered her weapon slightly. “Vale said the third girl was raised inside the family.”

“He meant Northstar's third girl, not the third infant. Evelyn was assigned as an observer before she married Victor.”

Sienna shook her head. “Mom?”

Mara nodded. “She was placed inside the family. She reported to Voss for twenty years.”

The revelation landed harder than the infant bracelets.

Clara remembered Evelyn encouraging competition between the sisters, reporting every argument to Margaret, punishing Clara's silence and rewarding Sienna's performance. She remembered medicine given before school tests, strange questionnaires, and long visits to doctors whose offices never displayed names.

“What changed?” Clara asked.

“Evelyn stopped reporting after the orchard fire. She tried to remove both of you from the program. Victor refused because Northstar threatened to expose his financial crimes.”

“Which crimes?”

Mara gestured toward the archive. “The ones he committed while laundering Northstar funds through Margaret's companies.”

Sienna sank onto a crate.

Everything she had defended was collapsing at once.

Warren kept his weapon trained on Mara. “You kidnapped Sienna.”

“I prevented Vale from delivering her to Voss.”

“You threatened Evelyn.”

“I showed Clara a recorded image. Vale never intended to shoot Evelyn.”

“You attacked the greenhouse.”

“No. Reeve worked for Victor's Northstar handler.”

Clara watched Mara's eyes. “You knew the attack would happen.”

“Yes.”

“And allowed it.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To force Victor to reveal the orchard phrase.”

Clara crossed the distance between them and struck Mara across the face.

The sound echoed through the archive.

Mara touched her lip, then smiled sadly. “That is fair.”

“No,” Clara said. “Fair would be putting you in the chair you used for Sienna.”

Sienna stood. “She saved me.”

“She used you.”

“So did everyone else.”

Clara had no answer to that.

Morales discovered a terminal hidden behind the central cabinet. It required three biometric inputs. The infant bracelets each contained a dried blood sample sealed beneath glass.

Mara moved toward them. “This is why Northstar needed the archive. The Key does not merely open the door. It identifies which bloodline can unlock the terminal.”

“And what is stored there?” Warren asked.

“The placement list. Every active Northstar subject, handler, compromised official, and financial route.”

“Enough to destroy the network,” Clara said.

“Or control it.”

A low alarm sounded.

The archive door closed behind them.

On the terminal, a message appeared.

REMOTE AUTHENTICATION ACCEPTED.

HELENA VOSS ACTIVE.

Mara rushed to the controls. “That is impossible. Voss is unconscious.”

The infant-bracelet cabinet unlocked by itself.

One bracelet slid into a hidden slot.

The terminal displayed a genetic match.

SUBJECT A CONFIRMED: CLARA STERLING.

Clara stared at the screen.

A second line appeared.
