Chapter 6 - The Third Path

The emergency conduit was barely wide enough for Clara's shoulders.

She entered first, pushing through dust and rusted cables while Warren followed. The tunnel behind them filled with the sharp crack of gunfire. A bullet struck the metal lip near Warren's boot.

Mara's voice echoed from hidden speakers. “You always were Grandmother's favorite.”

“No,” Clara called back. “I was the one who listened.”

The conduit divided beneath an old utility chamber. Clara studied the corroded labels. One route angled toward the police station. The other ran beneath the river toward the building where Mara held Sienna.

Warren understood before she spoke. “We split.”

“Your radio is compromised. Use the analog line in the station basement. Call only officers you knew before the digital conversion.”

“And you?”

“I bring Sienna back.”

Warren caught her arm. “Margaret's warning may have been about me.”

“It may still be.”

“You trust me anyway?”

“I trust what you have done since hearing it.”

That was all the reassurance she could offer.

They separated.

Clara crawled toward the river until the conduit opened beneath a boiler room. Above her, footsteps crossed a metal floor. She counted three distinct patterns: one heavy, one dragging, one almost silent.

The silent one stopped directly above the hatch.

Clara rolled aside as rounds punched through the metal. She fired upward, heard a body fall, then forced the hatch open. A masked guard lay wounded beside the boiler. Another rushed from the stairs. Clara used the pipe wall for cover, disarmed him, and drove him into the railing.

Sienna's voice came from the next room.

“Clara!”

Clara found her sister standing beside an open door, no longer restrained. Blood marked Sienna's wrist, but she held the fallen guard's knife.

“Where is Mara?”

“She left when you found the conduit.”

“Why did she leave you?”

Sienna looked ashamed. “Because she knew you would come.”

Clara searched the room. A monitor showed Vale inside Evelyn's interview room, but the feed had no sound. He was speaking urgently, tapping the pistol with one finger. Evelyn seemed terrified.

The countdown displayed two minutes.

Sienna moved toward Clara. “I can explain.”

“Later.”

“No, now. You need to know what I did.”

Clara kept her weapon aimed at the hall. “You used Vale's access token.”

“I met him because he said you were in danger. He told me Northstar had infiltrated your unit and that the only way to pull you into the open was to create a public accusation.”

“You believed framing me would protect me?”

“I believed the arrest would be stopped before it happened. Dad promised the documents would collapse under review. Mom said you would finally have to tell us who you really were.”

“And the livestream?”

Sienna's face crumpled. “That was mine.”

At least she did not hide from it.

The monitor changed. Vale stood and raised the pistol toward Evelyn.

Sienna screamed.

The countdown reached zero.

The image vanished.

Clara seized the monitor and traced the cable into the wall. The feed was delayed. A small time code in the corner showed that they had been watching events recorded twenty-three minutes earlier.

Mara had never offered a real choice.

Clara found an emergency telephone and dialed Warren's analog line.

He answered on the second ring. “Evelyn is alive. Vale is gone. He left the weapon on the table.”

“What did he take?”

“Nothing visible. But your mother keeps repeating a phrase.”

“What phrase?”

Warren lowered his voice.

“Beneath the white orchard, the first door remembers.”

Sienna stared at Clara. “Grandma used to say that when we visited the lake property.”

Clara remembered. Sterling Orchard had been sold fifteen years ago after a fire destroyed the main house. Margaret had kept one acre of land that no one was allowed to enter.

A burner phone rang on the desk.

Clara answered.

Vale's voice came through, strained and breathless. “Do not go to the orchard.”

“Where are you?”

“They made me sign the warrant. Mara is not leading Northstar. She is trying to destroy it.”

“By kidnapping Sienna and threatening my mother?”

“She is forcing the Key into the open before Voss wakes.”

“Why should I believe you?”

“Because the third girl was never taken from your family.”

Clara felt the room tilt.

Vale continued. “She was raised inside it.”

The call ended.

Sienna shook her head. “That makes no sense.”

Clara looked at her sister, then remembered Evelyn's medical records under three names, Victor's refusal to identify which infant was his child, and the woman with Clara's face moving through the station as if she knew every corridor.

A distant siren approached the warehouse.

Sienna whispered, “Clara, which one of us is Mara?”
