Chapter 5 - THE VOICE BEHIND THE WALL

Evelyn left the hotel through the service corridor.
Owen waited inside a linen storage room.
“You were right,” he said. “They replaced half my team.”
“Why are you still here?”
“Marcus wants security to appear stable until the celebration.”
“Can you access my father’s travel records?”
“I already tried. There are none.”
Evelyn felt the fear she had been holding return.
“He never left the country.”
“No.”
“Then where is he?”
Owen handed her a tablet.
A camera in the private elevator had captured Victor Vale entering the nineteenth floor three months earlier.
He wore a gray overcoat and walked with a cane.
Marcus stood beside him.
Victor never appeared on another camera.
“He went to Suite 1901,” Evelyn said.
“And never came out.”
“There are other exits.”
“None that would avoid every camera.”
Evelyn looked at the image of her father.
“Was the footage altered?”
“Parts of it were deleted. I recovered this frame from a backup server.”
“Who had access?”
“Marcus, the records director, and the new digital security company.”
“One of the shell companies.”
Owen nodded.
Evelyn thought of the hidden room behind the vault.
“Can you get me into Suite 1901 tonight?”
“Marcus added biometric locks.”
“Whose biometrics?”
“His and Celeste’s.”
“Not mine?”
“Not even yours.”
Evelyn gave him the brass key Arthur had provided.
“First, we need the contents of a locker.”
Central Station was crowded when Evelyn and Naomi arrived. They changed vehicles twice and entered through separate doors.
Locker 317 stood at the end of a corridor near the west platform.
The brass key opened it.
Inside was an old hotel uniform, a cassette recorder, a ledger, and a sealed letter addressed to Evelyn.
She opened the letter first.
My dear Evelyn,
If you are reading this, someone has entered the Founder’s Archive before I could explain why it exists.
The Aurelia Grand was built with money from four families, not one. Three surrendered their claims. The fourth did not.
Your father believes the final dispute ended years ago.
It did not.
Do not trust any transfer bearing only Victor’s signature.
The hotel’s controlling interest was never his to give.
Mother
Evelyn read the final sentence twice.
If Victor did not possess the controlling interest, who did?
Naomi opened the ledger.
It contained payments made by Marcus to board members, contractors, attorneys, and security consultants.
Several names were marked with a small crown symbol.
The same symbol engraved inside Evelyn’s ring.
“There’s enough here to expose him,” Naomi said.
“Not if he controls the board, the legal department, and the security footage.”
“What about the recording?”
The cassette recorder was old but functional.
Evelyn pressed play.
At first, there was only static.
Then Lillian Vale’s voice filled the narrow station corridor.
“If Victor refuses to tell Evelyn the truth, I will.”
A man answered.
“You made an agreement.”
“I made that agreement to protect my children.”
Children.
Not child.
Evelyn looked at Naomi.
Lillian continued.
“The second beneficiary cannot remain hidden forever.”
The man’s voice became clearer.
“If the girl returns, the hotel will be divided.”
“It was always meant to be divided.”
“And Victor will lose everything.”
“He will lose only what never belonged to him.”
A door opened on the recording.
Another voice spoke.
Victor’s voice.
“Turn that off, Lillian.”
The tape ended.
Evelyn stood motionless.
Her mother had spoken of children.
A second beneficiary.
A girl who might return.
Naomi turned the cassette over.
Words had been written on the back.
RECORDED INSIDE THE WEST WALL, SUITE 1901.
The recording had not been made in the Founder’s Archive.
It had been made from a hidden space beside it.
Someone had listened to Lillian and Victor argue.
Someone who had known the truth for years.
A station announcement echoed overhead.
Evelyn closed the locker.
A woman in a dark coat stood at the far end of the corridor watching them.
When Evelyn looked directly at her, the woman turned away.
Naomi followed.
The stranger moved through the crowd and disappeared onto an arriving train.
But before she vanished, something blue flashed against her coat.
A sapphire.
May you like
Evelyn looked back at the items in the locker.
The brooch Celeste wore was not the only one.
