Chapter 10 - THE CELEBRATION BUILT ON A LIE

On the morning of the centennial celebration, the city awoke to headlines about Evelyn.
Anonymous sources described her as unstable, jealous, and obsessed with destroying her husband’s success.
One article claimed she had broken into a medical room and attempted to abduct her father.
Another reported that she had threatened Celeste after discovering Marcus’s relationship with her.
Edited security footage showed Evelyn entering Suite 1901.
The footage did not show Victor imprisoned inside.
By noon, Marcus had transformed himself from an accused husband into a concerned executive protecting his hotel from a disturbed wife.
Evelyn watched the reports without responding.
A public denial would give Marcus the confrontation he needed.
Instead, Naomi sent the ledger to three investigative journalists under a timed release. Arthur contacted the former employees Marcus had removed. Owen secured statements from guards who had witnessed Victor’s confinement.
Margaret prepared the emergency transfer documents.
They had evidence.
They still needed the seal.
Marcus arrived at the hotel wearing the black tuxedo Lillian had given him on his first anniversary with Evelyn.
He had altered it slightly.
A gold administrator’s seal was fixed to his cuff link.
Celeste entered thirty minutes later in a gold gown.
The sapphire brooch gleamed above her heart.
From a surveillance van, Evelyn watched them greet guests beneath the chandelier.
“They’re displaying both keys,” Owen said.
“Because they believe no one knows what they are.”
Naomi enlarged the image.
“Marcus’s cuff link activates your transfer. Celeste’s brooch activates Helena’s claim.”
“Whoever files first controls the board.”
“Exactly.”
Evelyn’s phone rang.
Victor had regained consciousness.
She answered immediately.
“Father?”
“Do not trust Celeste.”
“You said she was connected to Mother’s death.”
“I was wrong.”
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“Then tell me the truth.”
“I blamed her because she had Lillian’s letters.”
“Where did she get them?”
“From the wreckage.”
“The boat wreckage?”
“Yes.”
“Was she there?”
“She survived.”
Evelyn stood.
“The report listed no other passenger.”
“Because I paid to remove her name.”
“Who was she?”
“I don’t know. Lillian arranged the meeting without telling me.”
“Why?”
“She believed the woman knew where Helena’s daughter was.”
Evelyn looked at Celeste on the monitor.
“Celeste may know what happened to my cousin.”
“Yes.”
“Why did you keep her existence secret?”
“Because Lillian’s death was not an accident.”
Evelyn’s grip tightened on the phone.
“Who caused it?”
“I don’t know. But the person who sabotaged the boat also changed Helena’s records.”
A nurse spoke in the background.
Victor’s breathing became strained.
“Evelyn, listen carefully. The original ownership instrument is hidden inside the hotel’s foundation display.”
“The glass model in the lobby?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Lillian put it there because everyone would see it and no one would search it.”
The centennial display included an original scale model of the Aurelia Grand. It stood in a glass case only thirty feet from the reception desk.
Marcus and Celeste were already beside it.
Evelyn looked at the time.
Guests would enter the lobby in twenty minutes.
“Father, who is Celeste?”
Victor whispered, “Ask her why she has your childhood photograph.”
The call ended.
On the monitor, Celeste looked directly toward the hidden security camera.
Then she raised one hand.
Between her fingers was a small photograph.
Even through the screen, Evelyn recognized it.
The image Arthur had shown her.

Lillian, Helena, Evelyn, and the child whose face had been erased.
But in Celeste’s copy, the second child’s face remained visible.
