Chapter 12 - The Fall of the House of Hale)

The Hale Meridian board assembled the next morning expecting Grant to resign.
Victor Sloane sat at the head of the table. Eleanor occupied the chair beside him despite the court’s referral for criminal investigation. Both had prepared statements blaming Pike for unauthorized misconduct and Grant for allowing a private scandal to endanger the merger.
Grant entered with Tessa, Maya, Detective Ortiz, and two federal safety investigators.
“This is a closed meeting,” Victor said.
“Not anymore.”
Grant connected Harrison’s memory card to the presentation screen. The original engineering reports appeared behind him, each bearing Victor’s approval. Then came invoices, recordings, and footage from Hangar 9.
Eleanor did not look at the screen. She looked at Grant.
“If you release this,” she said, “the company collapses.”
“If I bury it, people may die.”
“The modules were replaced years ago.”
An investigator answered. “Ten were replaced. Two aircraft remain unaccounted for.”
Victor rose. “This evidence was obtained illegally.”
Tessa placed her original audit on the table. “Mine wasn’t.”
She explained the shell vendors with the same disciplined clarity Grant remembered from the day they met. This time no one interrupted her. When she finished, federal agents asked Victor to accompany them for questioning.
He smiled at Grant as they approached.
“Ask your mother what your father did after he made that video.”
Eleanor’s composure finally cracked.
Grant turned to her. “What does he mean?”
She gathered her purse. “He is trying to divide us.”
“You did that seven years ago.”
“And you are destroying everything Harrison built.”
“No. I’m ending what all of you built on top of it.”
The board suspended Eleanor and Victor, canceled the merger, and authorized full cooperation with investigators. Grant resigned as president, then transferred his personal shares into a restitution fund for employees and any passengers harmed by the defective modules.
Reporters called it the fall of the Hale dynasty.
Grant felt, for the first time, that he had stepped out of its shadow.
Outside headquarters, Tessa found him alone beside the fountain.
“You gave up the company,” she said.
“I gave up a title. The boys’ trust still owns Harrison’s shares when they turn seven.”
“People will say I came back to take it.”
“People said you stole files because the truth frightened them. Let them speak. This time we answer together.”
Tessa took his hand.
It was not forgiveness, and it was not a promise that seven stolen years could be restored. It was something more honest: permission to face the next hour on the same side.
Across the plaza, officers escorted Eleanor toward an unmarked vehicle on charges of evidence tampering and conspiracy to commit fraud. She stopped beside Grant.
“I did love you,” she said.
Grant looked at the woman who had mistaken possession for love.
“Then you should have trusted me with the truth.”
The vehicle carried her away.

For the first time in his life, Grant did not watch his mother leave.
He turned toward Tessa and the two boys waiting beyond the cameras.
