Chapter 5 - The Dead Man’s Sample

Marcus enlarged the photograph.
“AM could stand for anything.”
“But 1958?” Clara asked.
“It’s suspicious, not conclusive.”
Chloe looked ill.
“Arthur Mercer died long before my treatment.”
“Biological material can be stored for decades,” Marcus said.
Clara thought of the stranger who had been sending messages.
Someone knew about the trust, the clinic, and Arthur Mercer’s medical records.
Someone had access to secrets that should have been buried.
Marcus arranged for Chloe to meet an independent obstetric specialist the next morning.
Until then, two private security officers guarded the hotel corridor.
Clara did not return to the home she shared with Julian.
Instead, she stayed in the guest suite above the Bennett headquarters.
At two in the morning, sleep remained impossible.
She opened an old storage box containing records from the early years of her marriage.
Wedding photographs.
Property documents.
Foundation programs.
A condolence booklet for Arthur Mercer.
Clara had never met Julian’s father. Arthur died when Julian was twenty.
The official story described a private plane that disappeared during a storm over the Atlantic. Wreckage had been recovered, but Arthur’s body had not.
Clara studied his photograph.
Arthur had Julian’s dark eyes and strong jaw.
Beneath the formal image was a quote attributed to him.
A family survives only when its name survives.
Clara searched old newspaper archives.
Arthur Mercer had expanded the family property empire but faced rumors of fraud shortly before his death. Several articles mentioned a federal investigation that ended when key records vanished in the plane crash.
One article included a photograph of Arthur beside a younger Evelyn and a man identified as his half-brother, Sebastian Mercer.
Clara had never heard Julian mention an uncle.
She enlarged the photograph.
Sebastian looked almost identical to Arthur.
According to the article, Sebastian served as chief operating officer of Mercer Holdings until a family dispute forced him out.
Clara searched for later references.
There were none.
Her phone vibrated.
The anonymous sender had written again.
You are looking at the wrong dead man.
Clara typed a reply.
Who are you?
No answer.
She sent another.
Is Sebastian Mercer alive?
The response came immediately.
Ask Evelyn why the family photograph disappeared from the hallway.
Clara remembered the dust outline beside the anniversary photograph.
“What were you hiding?” she whispered.
At eight the next morning, Nina arrived with coffee and security reports.
“The attack came through an administrative credential assigned to Mercer Heritage.”
“Can we prove Julian used it?”
“Not yet. The login was routed through several remote servers.”
Marcus joined them by video call.
He had spent the night reviewing the trust records available through public court filings.
“The original Arthur Mercer Legacy Trust was sealed after Arthur’s death,” he said. “But a summary appears in a probate dispute.”
“What does it say?” Clara asked.
“The controlling shares pass to Julian when he turns thirty-six, but only if he has a verified biological descendant.”
“And if he doesn’t?”
“They transfer to a secondary beneficiary.”
“Who?”
“The filing redacts the name.”
Clara leaned closer.
“Could it be Sebastian?”
“Possibly. There’s another complication. Evelyn amended several administrative provisions six months after your wedding.”
“Can she change the beneficiary?”
“Not directly. But she can influence how biological descent is verified.”
“The clinic.”
“Exactly.”
Nina placed a report on the table.
“I traced payments from the Lake Ashford shell companies.”
“Where did the money go?”
“Some moved offshore. But nine million dollars went to Meridian Reproductive Institute through an entity called Continuum Biomedical.”
Clara frowned.
“That’s more than fertility treatment.”
“Continuum operates private tissue storage facilities.”
Marcus asked Nina to send the files.
A call interrupted them.
It was Chloe.
Her voice was panicked.
“Someone came into my room.”
Clara stood.
“Where are the guards?”
“They’re outside. I was in the shower. When I came out, my suitcase was open.”
“Is anything missing?”
“The medical papers I took from Evelyn’s office.”
Clara looked at Marcus on the screen.
“Do not touch anything,” he told Chloe. “Security will move you.”
Chloe whispered, “There’s something else.”
“What?”
“They left a photograph on the bed.”
She sent Clara an image.
The photograph showed Evelyn standing beside Arthur Mercer at a private clinic.
Between them was another man.
Sebastian.

On the back, someone had written a date from sixteen years earlier.
Three weeks after Arthur’s supposed death.
