Chapter 14 - The Woman in the Security Video
Margaret Bennett had been buried sixteen years earlier.
Clara had identified her body after a car accident.
She remembered the hospital corridor.
The white sheet.
The wedding ring.
The small burn scar on Margaret’s left wrist.
There had been no doubt.
Yet Julian repeated the claim during interrogation.
He said someone had contacted him two weeks earlier using Margaret’s name.
The person offered evidence that would destroy Evelyn and Sebastian if Julian transferred Bennett company funds into the specified account.
Julian claimed he believed the transfer was part of an undercover arrangement.
Dana did not believe him.
Neither did Clara.
Then Julian’s attorney produced a security video.
The footage came from a private bank in Montreal.
It showed a woman entering a safe deposit room six days earlier.
She wore dark glasses and walked with a cane.
At one point, she turned toward the camera.
Clara stopped the video.
The woman resembled Margaret.
Older.
Thinner.
But unmistakably similar.
Rose arrived that evening.
When Clara showed her the image, she began trembling.
“She’s alive.”
“You knew?”
“No.”
“Look at me.”
Rose covered her mouth.
“I knew there were doubts.”
“What doubts?”
“The body from the accident was badly injured.”
“I saw her.”
“You saw her face and her hands.”
“She had Mother’s ring and scar.”
“Margaret had given the ring to Lillian years earlier.”
Clara stepped back.
“Lillian died in the fire.”
“We were told she did.”
Clara felt reality shifting again.
“Whose body did I identify?”
“I don’t know.”
“Was my mother escaping?”
Rose cried silently.
“She said if she ever disappeared, I had to protect you by believing she was dead.”
“You let me bury a stranger.”
“I was afraid.”
“For sixteen years?”
“Evelyn had people watching us.”
Clara turned away.
Anger and hope tore through her at the same time.
Marcus placed a hand on her shoulder.
“We need proof before assuming the woman is Margaret.”
Adrian arrived with records from the Montreal bank.
The safe deposit box had been opened using documents belonging to Margaret Bennett.
Inside, investigators found one item.
A sealed letter addressed to Clara.
Dana delivered it personally.
Clara opened the envelope.
The handwriting looked like her mother’s.
Clara,
If you are reading this, the Mercer succession plan has reached its final stage.
I am sorry for every year you believed I abandoned you through death. The truth is crueler. I left because staying near you would have allowed Evelyn to find Adrian and the original records.
Arthur created the wife clause after discovering that Julian had been placed in his family through fraud. He believed the only safe successor would be someone outside the Mercer bloodline, tied to the family by choice rather than birth.
I never expected that person to be you.
Do not trust Sebastian.
Do not trust Adrian completely.
And do not assume Evelyn is the only woman who built this conspiracy.
The letter ended without a signature.
Beneath it was an address in Montreal and a date.
Tomorrow.
Clara traveled with Dana, Marcus, and two federal agents.
The address led to a quiet house near the river.
The front door stood open.
Inside, tea remained warm on the table.
A woman’s coat hung beside the door.
No one was there.
On the wall were photographs documenting Clara’s entire adult life.
Her graduation.
Her first bakery.
Her wedding.
Company openings.
Awards.
Some had been taken from public events.
Others had been captured from a distance.
Clara felt as though someone had been standing just beyond her sight for years.
Marcus found a computer in the study.
The hard drive had been wiped.
Dana discovered a hidden camera connected to the home’s security system.
They reviewed footage from two hours earlier.
The woman resembling Margaret stood in the hallway.
She looked directly at the camera.
Then Evelyn entered the house.
Clara stopped breathing.
The two women spoke for twenty minutes, but the recording had no audio.
At first they appeared to argue.
Then Margaret handed Evelyn a folder.
Evelyn read it.
Her face collapsed.
She began crying.
Margaret embraced her.
Clara stared at the image.
“They know each other.”
Adrian stood behind her.
“They always did.”
The footage continued.
A third person entered through the back door.
