Chapter 7 - The Sister Who Disappeared

Evelyn Harper had vanished from the family years earlier.
That was the official story.
She had moved to Europe.
She had started a new life.
She had no interest in the family business.
Michael rarely mentioned her.
Margaret refused to discuss her.
But Caroline remembered one photograph.
It had been taken years before her engagement.
Michael had accidentally left it on his desk.
Two siblings standing beside their father.
Michael smiling.
Evelyn looking directly into the camera.
Caroline had asked about her.
Michael's face had immediately changed.
“We don't talk about Evelyn.”
“Why?”
“Because she betrayed the family.”
That was all he had said.
Now Caroline listened to the recording again.
Evelyn's voice was unmistakable.
“We agreed she would never know.”
Michael answered:
“She won't.”
“When?”
“After the wedding.”
“And if she finds out?”
“She won't have the resources to fight us.”
Caroline stopped the recording.
Her entire body went cold.
Fight us.
Not fight me.
Us.
She called Grace.
“Find Evelyn.”
“I already started.”
“She's alive.”
“I know.”
“And she's connected to this.”
“I know.”
“How?”
Grace sighed.
“That's what we're trying to discover.”
That afternoon, Caroline received an envelope.
No return address.
Inside was a single photograph.
Michael and Margaret standing outside a courthouse.
Beside them was Evelyn.
The date was three weeks earlier.
Caroline stared at it.
Evelyn had been in the country.
She had been meeting Michael.
And someone had taken the photograph.
On the back was a handwritten sentence.
Ask her what happened to your father.
Caroline froze.
Her father.
Michael knew her father had died years ago.
He had always called it an unfortunate accident.
Caroline had never questioned it.
Until now.
She called Grace.
“I need my father's old files.”
“Why?”
“Because I think Michael knows something about his death.”
There was silence.
Then Grace said:
“Caroline…”
“Yes?”
“I think you should sit down.”
“What?”
“We found the financial records.”
“Whose?”
“Your father's.”
Caroline's voice trembled.
“And?”
“He didn't die with debt.”
“What?”
“He left behind an investment portfolio.”
Caroline stared at the wall.
“How much?”
Grace told her.
Caroline couldn't speak.
The money was significant.
Far more than she had ever known.
“Where did it go?”
Grace answered slowly.
“That is the problem.”
“Why?”
“Because the account was closed shortly after your father's death.”
“Who closed it?”
Grace hesitated.
“The authorization came from a company controlled by Michael's father.”
Caroline felt the room spin.
Michael's family had been connected to her father.
Long before she met Michael.
Long before the wedding.
Long before she knew the Harpers existed.
And suddenly the marriage looked different.
May you like
Maybe Michael hadn't chosen Caroline because he loved her.
Maybe he had chosen her because of something her father left behind.
