Chapter 12 - The Door Behind the Wall

Caroline reached her mother's house just after midnight.

Michael's car was gone.

The house was dark.

Nothing appeared disturbed.

That made it worse.

Grace searched the rooms.

Daniel examined the hallway.

Evelyn stayed near Caroline.

Then Caroline remembered the box.

It had been hidden inside an old cabinet.

She opened it.

Empty.

Her heart sank.

“He found it.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

“What?”

“Look closer.”

Caroline examined the cabinet.

One panel looked slightly different.

Daniel pressed it.

A hidden compartment opened.

Inside was the wooden box.

Caroline stared.

Michael hadn't found it.

She lifted it carefully.

The brass key fit perfectly.

The lock clicked.

Inside was a stack of documents.

A small flash drive.

And a photograph.

Caroline picked up the photograph.

Her father stood beside another man.

She recognized him.

Richard Harper.

But there was something else.

A third person stood behind them.

A woman.

Caroline looked closer.

She knew her.

Margaret.

But the photograph was dated decades before Caroline was born.

Grace picked up the documents.

“This isn't just about the apartment.”

“No.”

“This is about the original Harper fortune.”

Daniel nodded.

Caroline turned to him.

“What did my father find?”

Daniel answered:

“Proof that the fortune was built through fraudulent transfers.”

Caroline's voice shook.

“And he planned to expose them?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't he?”

Daniel looked down.

“Because he was threatened.”

“By Richard?”

“No.”

Caroline waited.

Daniel looked at her.

“By Margaret.”

Silence.

Caroline's hands tightened around the photograph.

“Why?”

“Because she had something your father wanted.”

“What?”

“Your mother.”

Caroline froze.

“My mother?”

Daniel nodded.

“Your father believed your mother had been used as leverage.”

Caroline felt tears gather in her eyes.

“What happened to her?”

Daniel looked away.

“That's what I don't know.”

Caroline stared.

“My mother died.”

Daniel's expression changed.

“I know what the official records say.”

Caroline whispered:

“What do you mean?”

Daniel didn't answer.

Grace stepped closer.

“Daniel.”

He looked at her.

“There is something else.”

“What?”

“The woman Caroline believes was her mother…”

May you like

He paused.

“…may not have been her mother at all.”
