Chapter 15 - The Message From Rachel)

Thomas did not tell Daniel immediately.
That was his first mistake.
The message arrived at 3:07 a.m. on a phone Thomas had kept powered off for six years.
Only three people had ever known the number.
Thomas.
Katherine.
Rachel.
The phone vibrated once.
Thomas woke instantly.
He stared at the screen.
UNKNOWN ENCRYPTED SENDER.
One attachment.
One line of text.
YOU EXPOSED THE WRONG HAVEN.
Thomas sat upright.
His apartment was dark.
For several seconds he did not touch the phone.
Then he opened the attachment.
A video.
The screen showed a concrete room.
No windows.
A metal chair.
A clock on the wall.
Thomas leaned closer.
Someone entered the frame.
He stopped breathing.
The figure wore a dark hood.
Gloved hands placed a familiar object on the chair.
A white pillow.
Emma’s pillow.
Thomas stood so quickly the chair behind him fell.
He called Daniel.
No answer.
Again.
No answer.
Thomas grabbed his coat.
Then the video continued.
The hooded figure removed one glove.
A woman’s hand.
A wedding ring.
Not Vanessa’s.
Thomas watched.
The figure placed a photograph beside the pillow.
Rachel.
Alive.
Thomas froze.
Impossible.
The photograph was dated.
Three days after Rachel’s supposed death.
Thomas enlarged it.
Rachel stood beside a private aircraft.
Her face was partially turned away.
But it was her.
The same scar near her eyebrow.
The same coat.
The same necklace Daniel had buried with her.
Thomas’s mouth went dry.
The video ended.
Another message appeared.
ASK DANIEL WHY THE BODY WAS NEVER IDENTIFIED BY FAMILY.
Thomas stared.
Rachel’s body had been badly injured in the crash.
The casket had remained closed.
Daniel had identified her through personal belongings, dental records, and official confirmation.
Official confirmation prepared by Haven-connected police.
Thomas felt suddenly cold.
He called Naomi.
Voicemail.
He called Katherine.
No answer.
He called Daniel again.
This time Daniel answered.
“What happened?”
Thomas could barely speak.
“Where’s Emma?”
“Asleep. Why?”
“Check.”
“Thomas.”
“Check her now.”
Daniel heard something in his brother’s voice.
He moved.
Thomas listened to footsteps.
A bedroom door opening.
Then Daniel exhaled.
“She’s here.”
Thomas shut his eyes.
“Good.”
“What’s going on?”
“I received a message.”
“From who?”
“I don’t know.”
Daniel was fully awake now.
“What did it say?”
Thomas hesitated.
He looked again at the photograph.
Rachel alive.
Three days after the crash.
It had to be fabricated.
Haven manipulated evidence.
Faces.
Records.
People.
But why create this now?
“Thomas.”
“I’m sending you something.”
He forwarded the image.
Silence.
Long silence.
Then Daniel whispered:
“No.”
Thomas said nothing.
Daniel’s breathing changed.
“No. That’s not possible.”
“I know.”
“Where did you get this?”
“The old phone.”
“Which phone?”
“The one Rachel used to contact me.”
Another silence.
Daniel zoomed in on the image.
Thomas knew exactly what detail his brother would notice.
Rachel’s left hand.
A small burn mark near the thumb.
She got it making caramel for Emma’s fifth birthday.
No public photograph showed it clearly.
Daniel whispered, “That’s her.”
Thomas closed his eyes.
“We don’t know that.”
“That’s her hand.”
“Daniel…”
“That is my wife.”
Thomas heard movement.
“Where are you going?”
“To Naomi.”
“Wait for me.”
“No.”
“Daniel.”
“I buried an empty casket for all I know.”
“You don’t know that.”
“I know Haven falsified Thomas Mercer’s death.”
Thomas had no answer.
Daniel continued.
“They falsified yours. They sealed reports. They controlled police. They controlled medical records.”
“Rachel’s death had dental confirmation.”
“From a pathologist whose name appears in the ledger.”
Thomas went still.
He had forgotten.
Dr. Samuel Lorne.
Payment recipient.
Haven associate.
Daniel’s voice dropped.
“You knew.”
“No.”
“You had the ledger.”
“I never connected him to Rachel’s autopsy.”
“But he’s there.”
“Yes.”
Daniel breathed hard.
“Then we exhume the grave.”
“Daniel…”
“We find out who is in that coffin.”
Thomas looked at the message again.
YOU EXPOSED THE WRONG HAVEN.
Something bothered him.
Not Rachel’s photograph.
The wording.
The wrong Haven.
As if there was another organization.
Or another layer.
“Daniel, listen to me.”
“What?”
“The message says we exposed the wrong Haven.”
“So?”
“What if Haven wasn’t the real organization?”
Silence.
“What if Celeste wasn’t protecting Haven from us?”
Thomas stared at the photograph.
“What if she was protecting us from something above it?”
Daniel sounded furious.
“Celeste killed Rachel.”
“Maybe.”
“What do you mean maybe?”
“Pike caused the crash. Celeste admitted ordering him to stop Rachel.”
“That’s murder.”
“Yes.”
“But we never proved Rachel was in the car when it went over the cliff.”
Daniel stopped breathing.
Thomas continued.
“The vehicle burned.”
“Yes.”
“The body was identified through compromised channels.”
“Yes.”
“The necklace in the evidence report could have been planted.”
“Yes.”
“And Rachel appears in a photograph three days later.”
Daniel whispered, “Where?”
Thomas examined the background.
Private plane.
Hangar number.
A partial company logo.
He recognized it.
“Mercer Aviation.”
Daniel’s voice changed.
“Our company?”
“Dad sold that division fifteen years ago.”
“To who?”
Thomas typed.
The corporate history appeared.
The buyer was a holding company.
Halcyon Group.
Thomas searched the master ledger.
Nothing.
No Halcyon.
No payments.
No names.
“That’s strange.”
“What?”
“Halcyon never appears in the Haven ledger.”
Daniel said, “Maybe because it wasn’t part of Haven.”
Thomas remembered Charles’s final letter.
The person who controls Haven is someone you know.
Someone you trust.
Someone who has been close to you since childhood.
Charles had named Eleanor.
Katherine said he was wrong.
What if Charles had not been referring to a person?
What if he meant an institution?
Something close to Daniel since childhood.
Something he trusted without question.
Mercer Industries.
Thomas’s stomach dropped.
“Daniel.”
“What?”
“Who controls Mercer Industries while you’re cooperating with the federal investigation?”
Daniel paused.
“The board.”
“Who chairs it?”
Another pause.
“Edward Shaw.”
Thomas closed his eyes.
Edward Shaw.
Charles Mercer’s best friend.
Daniel’s godfather.
The man who taught Daniel how to sail.
The man who sat beside him at Rachel’s funeral.
The man who had persuaded the board to approve Daniel’s leave after the wedding disaster.
The man who had controlled Mercer Industries during nearly every critical moment.
Thomas searched the ledger.
Edward Shaw’s name did not appear.
Not once.
That was more frightening than finding it.
“Thomas?”
“Shaw isn’t in the ledger.”
“Maybe he wasn’t involved.”
“No.”
Thomas stared at the blank search result.
“Everyone was in the ledger. Friends. Enemies. People who received fifty thousand dollars once twenty years ago.”
Daniel understood.
“But not Shaw.”
“Not once.”
“Why?”
Thomas whispered, “Because you don’t record payments to the person who owns the ledger.”
Silence.
Then Daniel said:
“I’m calling Naomi.”
Thomas grabbed his keys.
“I’m coming to you.”
They disconnected.
Thomas opened his apartment door.
A man stood in the hallway.
Thomas stepped backward.
The man was in his early thirties.
Dark hair.
Thin scar above one eyebrow.
Thomas knew him immediately despite not having seen him since he was a teenager.
“Caleb.”
His son stared at him.
Thomas could not speak.
Caleb’s expression held no joy.
No relief.
Only urgency.
“You need to come with me.”
Thomas’s eyes filled.
“I thought you didn’t know I was alive.”
“I’ve known for three years.”
“Katherine…”
“Mom doesn’t know I know.”
Thomas stared at the son he had sacrificed everything to protect.
“Why are you here?”
Caleb glanced toward the stairwell.
“Because Daniel is about to make the same mistake Rachel made.”
“What mistake?”
“Trusting Naomi Price.”
Thomas’s blood went cold.
“No.”
Caleb grabbed his arm.
“Listen to me. Haven wasn’t the organization.”
Thomas stared.
Caleb lowered his voice.
“It was the cleanup crew.”
The hallway seemed to narrow.
Thomas whispered, “Cleanup for what?”
Caleb looked toward the elevator.
A light above it changed.
Someone was coming up.
Caleb pulled Thomas toward the stairs.
“The people who created Haven called the real network something else.”
“What?”
Caleb opened the emergency door.
Before they disappeared into the stairwell, he answered.
“Eden.”
Across town, Daniel reached Naomi Price’s apartment building.
The photograph of Rachel was still open on his phone.
Emma slept safely with Eleanor under federal protection.
Daniel entered the elevator.
Pressed the seventh floor.
The doors opened.
Naomi’s apartment door stood slightly ajar.
“Naomi?”
No answer.
Daniel entered.
The lights were off.
He drew the small pistol Thomas had insisted he carry.
“Naomi?”
He moved through the living room.
A lamp lay broken.
A chair had been overturned.
Then he saw someone sitting at the dining table.
Daniel raised the gun.
The person slowly turned.
Daniel’s hand dropped.
His entire body stopped.
A woman sat in the darkness.
Dark hair.
Gray sweater.
A small scar beside her eyebrow.
Daniel forgot how to breathe.
The woman looked older than the Rachel in his memories.
Thinner.
Her eyes carried years he had never witnessed.
But when she spoke, Daniel recognized the voice instantly.
“Danny.”
The pistol slipped from his fingers and hit the floor.
Daniel stared at the wife he had buried two years ago.
Rachel Mercer began to cry.
Then she said the words that ensured the nightmare was nowhere near finished.
May you like
“You have to get Emma away from my mother.”
And somewhere across the city, Eleanor Pierce quietly opened Emma’s bedroom door.
