Chapter 6 - Release Every File

After Daniel made the call, Rebecca acted immediately.
She sent the evidence to the independent members of the Hayes Analytics board, the company’s external auditors, and the attorneys responsible for protecting client funds.
She did not send private information to the public. She did not exaggerate or accuse anyone beyond what the documents proved.
She simply turned on the lights.
Around the wedding lawn, phones began vibrating.
Several guests were executives, investors, and business partners of Charles Whitmore. They read the board’s emergency notice and slowly turned toward him.
Charles stepped over the broken champagne glass.
“Daniel, think carefully,” he warned. “Whatever Rebecca told you can be handled privately.”
Daniel helped Eleanor stand.
Her dress clung to her legs, heavy with water. She looked smaller beneath his jacket, but her eyes were steady.
“You sprayed my mother with a hose,” Daniel said. “Then you called her miserable in front of everyone. Privacy stopped being your concern the moment you decided humiliation was entertainment.”
Vanessa threw the hose onto the grass.
“This is insane. I made one joke.”
“You sent my private documents to your father.”
Her face paled.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Daniel took out his phone and played part of the security recording Rebecca had urged him to hear.
Vanessa’s voice came through the speaker.
Once we are married, the trust gives us control. Daniel signs whatever I put in front of him. He still thinks love means loyalty.
Charles’s recorded voice answered.
And the mother?
Vanessa laughed.
She will be easy to remove. Daniel is embarrassed by her. He just refuses to admit it.
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Eleanor looked at Daniel, not with anger, but with heartbreak for what he had just discovered.
Vanessa stepped backward.
“That was taken out of context.”
“What context makes it acceptable?” Daniel asked.
Charles pointed toward the guests.
“You’re destroying two families.”
“No,” Eleanor said for the first time. “You tried to destroy one family so you could purchase another.”
Her voice was quiet, yet it carried across the lawn.
Margaret covered her mouth.
Vanessa stared at Eleanor with pure hatred.
“You think you won?”
May you like
Eleanor pulled Daniel’s jacket closer around herself.
“No, dear. I think my son finally woke up.”
