Chapter 1 - The Ring in the Wet Grass

The first blast of water struck Eleanor Hayes across the shoulder.

She gasped as the freezing stream soaked her royal-blue dress, flattened her silver curls, and knocked her pearl necklace sideways. Her heel slipped on the wet grass, forcing her down onto one knee beneath the white floral arch.

For one terrible second, nobody moved.

More than a hundred wedding guests stood frozen beneath the bright summer sun. A string quartet stopped playing in the middle of a note. Champagne glasses hovered near shocked mouths.

Then Vanessa laughed.

She stood in her white lace wedding gown, gripping the dark green garden hose with both hands. Sunlight glittered through the water spraying from the nozzle.

“Maybe this will wash the poverty off her!”

Several guests gasped.

Eleanor lowered her face, not because she was ashamed, but because she did not want anyone to see the tears mixing with the water on her cheeks.

Daniel reached his mother before the next stream struck her.

He stepped between them, taking the water across the back of his black tuxedo.

“Turn it off,” he said.

Vanessa continued smiling.

“Daniel, relax. It was a joke.”

“Turn it off. Right now.”

Something in his voice silenced the entire lawn.

Vanessa finally released the handle. Water dripped from Daniel’s hair and shoulders as he stared at the woman he was supposed to marry in less than ten minutes.

Behind Vanessa, her father, Charles Whitmore, lifted his champagne glass.

“Don’t ruin the wedding over that miserable woman,” he said.

Daniel looked at him.

Then he looked at Vanessa.

Without another word, Daniel removed the gold wedding band he had begun wearing during the private morning ceremony. He held it between two fingers for a moment before dropping it into the wet grass.

“The wedding is over.”

Vanessa’s smile vanished.

Daniel took off his tuxedo jacket and wrapped it around Eleanor’s trembling shoulders. Then he pulled his phone from his pocket and called the only person who knew the full truth.

Rebecca answered immediately.

“Daniel?”

“Release every file,” he said. “Send them to the board, the auditors, and the attorneys. Tonight.”

Across the lawn, Charles’s champagne glass slipped from his hand.

It shattered at his feet.
