Chapter 5 - The Seven Names

Nathaniel stood before the damaged list for a long time.

The first six names were still readable.

Silas Mercer.

Edmund Crane.

Victoria Hale.

Thomas Bell.

Irene Walsh.

Gabriel Cross.

Each had held a powerful position inside Vale Meridian at some point during the previous decade.

Silas ran property recovery.

Edmund had been the company’s chief financial officer before retiring overseas.

Victoria controlled legal compliance.

Thomas managed data security.

Irene had served on the board until her death two years earlier.

Gabriel was Nathaniel’s current vice chairman and oldest friend.

The seventh name had been removed so violently that part of the wall had broken away.

“Seven people,” June said. “Elara believed one of them created the entire operation.”

“Gabriel was on the list,” Nathaniel replied. “But if he was one of the seven, why was he Ruby’s emergency contact?”

“Maybe Elara trusted him before she learned the truth.”

Ruby moved toward the cradle.

A folded blanket rested inside it.

The same pale yellow blanket shown in Silas’s photograph.

She touched the edge.

“This was mine.”

June nodded.

Nathaniel looked through the files.

Most contained purchase agreements, tenant records, and internal authorizations bearing his forged signature. Several properties had been bought for almost nothing after residents were threatened with eviction.

Then he found something worse.

A file labeled Hawthorne Project.

Inside was a list of residents who had disappeared from official housing records after refusing to leave.

Some had accepted settlements.

Some had been arrested on false charges.

Others had vanished.

Nathaniel closed the folder.

“My company did this.”

“You did not know,” Ruby said.

He looked at her.

“The people who lost their homes would not care whether I knew. My name was on the buildings.”

Ruby considered that.

“Then help them get their homes back.”

Nathaniel glanced at June.

“She sounds like Elara.”

June’s expression softened for the first time.

A small tape recorder sat on a desk.

Ruby pressed the play button.

Static filled the room.

Then Elara’s voice emerged.

“If you are hearing this, the Architect has found Hawthorne Lane.”

Nathaniel gripped the desk.

Elara continued.

“My father is not responsible for what Vale Meridian has become. He built a company and then surrounded himself with people who learned how to hide inside his trust.”

Nathaniel closed his eyes.

“I have identified six members of the network. The seventh person is protected by the family itself. I cannot write the name here because the room may be discovered.”

A pause followed.

“Gabriel says he can move the child somewhere safe. I want to believe him. But trust is how this began.”

The recording clicked off.

June shook her head.

“Elara never told me Gabriel offered to help.”

Marcus searched the desk.

He found a second cassette hidden beneath a drawer.

It was dated two days later.

Nathaniel inserted it.

This time, Elara sounded breathless.

“Gabriel lied.”

A loud knock echoed through the recording.

“If anything happens to me, do not give Ruby to him. Her father’s name is…”

The tape stopped.

The remaining strip had been cut out.

Ruby stared at the machine.

“Why does everyone keep stopping before saying who my father is?”

No one answered.

A noise came from the apartment hallway.

Marcus raised his hand, signaling everyone to remain still.

The front door opened.

Footsteps moved through the living room.

Nathaniel expected Gabriel or Silas.

Instead, a woman entered the kitchen.

She wore a dark blue coat and carried a medical bag.

June gasped.

The woman looked almost exactly like Elara.

Nathaniel whispered his daughter’s name.

The stranger raised both hands.

“I’m not Elara.”

“Who are you?” Marcus demanded.

“My name is Dr. Claire Rowan.”

She slowly removed a photograph from her pocket.

It showed Elara in a hospital bed shortly after Ruby’s birth.

Claire stood beside her.

“I delivered Ruby,” she said.

Ruby moved closer to June.

Claire looked toward the hidden room.

“If you found the tapes, then you know the wrong people have been hunting this child.”

Nathaniel stepped in front of Ruby.

“Who is her father?”

Claire’s eyes moved toward the list on the wall.

“The man who ordered her eviction.”

A crash came from the living room window.

A metal object rolled across the floor and released a cloud of white smoke.

Marcus pulled Ruby into the hidden room.

Nathaniel reached for June.

Through the smoke, a masked figure entered the apartment and ran directly toward the wall containing the seven names.

The figure did not come for Ruby.

He came to destroy the last name.
