Chapter 15 - The Voice Behind the Door

The photograph of Adrian was taken after his abduction.

A newspaper beside him showed that morning’s date.

He was alive.

Behind him stood a wooden door marked with the same compass symbol found on Ruby’s key.

Nathaniel called Gabriel.

Gabriel arrived at Hawthorne Lane within twenty minutes.

When he saw the photograph, his hands began to shake.

“I know that room.”

“Where is it?” Marcus asked.

Gabriel looked at Ruby, then at Nathaniel.

“It was beneath the original Vale residence.”

Nathaniel frowned.

“The house was demolished before I was born.”

“The house above it was demolished. The rooms beneath it were preserved.”

“By whom?”

“Augustus and my father.”

Gabriel removed a key from his coat.

It was another silver compass.

This one had seven lines around its edge.

“They created a private archive under the estate. Every property transfer, partnership agreement, and family contract was stored there.”

“The final ledger,” June said.

Gabriel nodded.

“If Adrian is inside that room, the Architect wants us to follow.”

Nathaniel studied the photograph.

“Or Elara wants us to.”

Ruby looked at him.

“You still think the woman on the radio was my mother?”

“I don’t know what to think.”

“Then we find out.”

“No.”

Ruby’s expression hardened.

“You said you wouldn’t make decisions about me without me.”

“This is different.”

“It is always different when adults want to break promises.”

Nathaniel crouched in front of her.

“The people behind this have killed to protect their secret.”

“And they keep finding me because everyone else knows more about my life than I do.”

June placed a hand on Ruby’s shoulder.

“She is right about one thing. Hiding has not protected her.”

Marcus traced the likely location of the original Vale residence. The land now belonged to a closed private school outside the city.

That evening, they entered through an abandoned maintenance building.

Beneath the basement, Gabriel found a metal door.

Seven compass keys were required.

They possessed four.

Nathaniel’s key.

Ruby’s key.

Catherine’s key recovered from Silas.

Gabriel’s key.

Sebastian arrived carrying the fifth.

Claire brought the sixth, which Elara had left with her after Ruby’s birth.

The seventh remained missing.

Ruby examined the door.

Each keyhole surrounded a central panel.

She remembered the silver key she had found inside Nathaniel’s wallet after the tower attack. At the time, they believed it opened a deposit box.

She removed it from her backpack.

Seven lines surrounded its compass.

The final key turned.

The door opened.

A long corridor extended beneath the ground.

Lights activated one by one.

At the end was the blue room from Adrian’s photograph.

But the chair was empty.

The newspaper remained on the table.

Beside it lay the final ledger.

Nathaniel opened the book.

The first pages documented the partnership between Augustus Vale and Gabriel’s father.

The next contained secret property transfers and records of the Architecture.

Near the end was a family tree connecting the Vale and Cross bloodlines.

Several names had been crossed out.

Ruby’s name appeared at the bottom.

A line connected her to Elara.

The line leading to her father had been covered by a sealed black page.

Before Nathaniel could open it, a telephone rang inside the room.

It was an old landline with no visible connection.

Ruby reached for it.

Nathaniel stopped her.

He answered instead.

For several seconds, he heard only breathing.

Then his daughter spoke.

“Father.”

Nathaniel gripped the receiver.

“Elara?”

Ruby moved closer.

Nathaniel switched the telephone to speaker mode.

A woman’s voice filled the hidden room.

“I’m sorry it took so long.”

Ruby’s eyes filled.

“Are you my mother?”

Silence followed.

Then the woman answered.

“Yes, Ruby.”

June covered her mouth.

Nathaniel looked around the room as though Elara might step from the shadows.

“Where are you?” he asked.

“Closer than you think.”

“Did you take Adrian?”

“I saved him.”

“From whom?”

“The person who ordered the eviction.”

“Edmund has been arrested.”

“Edmund followed instructions.”

“Silas says the Architect is not one person.”

“He is right.”

Nathaniel looked at the sealed page.

“Who is Ruby’s father?”

The voice on the phone changed.

Fear entered Elara’s breathing.

“Do not open that page.”

“Why?”

“Because the ledger was designed to identify anyone who reads it.”

A quiet click sounded inside the wall.

Marcus drew his weapon.

Red lights activated above the door.

The corridor behind them sealed.

Nathaniel lowered his voice.

“Elara, tell me how to get Ruby out.”

“You cannot use the door.”

“Then what do we use?”

“The passage beneath the family tree.”

Sebastian searched the floor.

Ruby stared at the black page covering her father’s name.

“Mom,” she said, “is Lucas Cross my father?”

The woman on the telephone began to cry.

“No.”

Gabriel stepped toward the phone.

“Then who is?”

The lights went out.

In the darkness, someone began unlocking the blue room from the other side.

Elara whispered through the speaker.

“Ruby’s father is standing closer to her than any of you realize.”

The door handle slowly turned.

Nathaniel pulled Ruby behind him.

Marcus aimed at the entrance.

Gabriel stared toward Sebastian.

Sebastian stared toward Nathaniel.

June held Ruby’s hand.

The door opened only a few inches.

A man’s voice came from the darkness beyond it.

“Elara told you not to open the ledger.”

Ruby recognized the voice.

She had heard it once before.

It belonged to the man who delivered the eviction notice.

The door opened wider.

Behind him stood a second figure.

A woman with gray-green eyes stepped into the red emergency light.

Ruby stopped breathing.

The woman looked exactly like the mother in Nathaniel’s photograph.

But instead of running to Ruby, she raised one finger to her lips.

Then she looked directly at the person standing beside Nathaniel.

“You,” Elara whispered. “Step away from my daughter.”

No one moved.

The sealed black page inside the ledger began to burn from the edges.

And before the name of Ruby’s father could be revealed, every light beneath the abandoned Vale estate went dark.
