Chapter 12 - The Trial Before Dawn

Claire watched the live feed.

Nathan appeared exhausted but alert. His hands were free. The room around him looked like a command center, with maps covering the walls and computer screens displaying hundreds of names.

The person beside him wore a dark jacket.

Only one hand was visible.

A gold ring marked with the symbol of three lines crossing a circle.

“You said Nathan went willingly,” Claire said.

“He did,” Rusk replied.

“Why?”

“Because the Cartographer offered him access to the complete Lantern archive.”

“And Nathan believed the offer?”

“Nathan believes he can destroy the network from inside.”

Lily stepped beside her mother.

“Can he hear us?”

Rusk looked at the child.

“No.”

Lily touched the screen.

“Then why did he tell us to be quiet?”

Rusk’s expression changed.

Nathan had reacted to them.

The feed was not one-way.

He could see the room.

Claire looked toward the ceiling and found a tiny camera above the emergency light.

Nathan had warned them not to reveal something in front of Rusk.

Claire changed her tone.

“My husband failed. Wren has been arrested, and the brass key is secure.”

Rusk studied her.

“You removed the key from the coffin?”

“Yes.”

“Where is it now?”

“Mercer has it.”

Lily said nothing.

The key remained hidden inside the back cover of her storybook.

Rusk walked toward the steel door.

“Then Mercer has already made the final mistake.”

On the live feed, Nathan moved closer to one of the maps. He pointed toward three locations in sequence.

Church.

Station.

Home.

Lily understood first.

“He’s giving us another code.”

Rusk turned.

“What did you say?”

“Nothing.”

The steel door opened from the other side.

Mercer and Cross entered with Voss and Eleanor.

Rusk raised the small device.

Every screen in the medical station activated.

General Wren appeared from an interrogation room in the capital, surrounded by government investigators.

A secure hearing had already begun.

Senior military officials occupied smaller windows around him.

Mercer looked at Rusk.

“You activated the oversight channel.”

“I did what Nathan requested.”

Claire stared at her.

“You are helping him?”

“I have been helping him for six years.”

“You tried to take Lily.”

“No. I stopped someone else from taking her.”

The audio clip from the hospital had been misunderstood.

Rusk had said, “Move the child before the father returns,” but she had been repeating an order she overheard, warning Mercer about the plan.

Nathan had suspected her because Wren altered the hospital report.

Rusk placed her device on the table.

“The Cartographer has survived by making every ally appear guilty.”

Mercer looked at the hearing screens.

“Why bring Wren into this?”

“Because Nathan wants him to testify.”

Wren’s voice came through the speakers.

“I will not participate in this performance.”

Eleanor stepped forward.

“Then perhaps you will participate in your own confession.”

Wren saw her.

For the first time, the general lost control of his expression.

Eleanor had been the original record keeper for Operation Lantern. She possessed copies of every authorization Wren had issued when he converted the rescue network into a private operation.

Rusk uploaded the documents to the hearing.

One by one, officials verified the signatures.

Wren tried to dismiss them as forgeries.

Then Elias Dane appeared on another screen.

He provided transport records proving that Wren ordered the removal of witnesses, including his brother Philip.

Philip Dane had not died.

He had been assigned a new identity and sent abroad after refusing to transport civilians to a private detention site.

Elias had spent years searching for him.

Nathan had promised to find the route.

The hearing continued as dawn approached.

Wren’s command authority was formally suspended. Warrants were issued for private contractors and officers connected to the illegal network. The government ordered all active Lantern routes frozen.

Claire expected relief.

Instead, Nathan’s live image disappeared.

The command room feed went dark.

Rusk checked the connection.

“The Cartographer severed it.”

Eleanor looked at the three locations Nathan had indicated.

Church.

Station.

Home.

“It is not a travel route,” she said. “It is a succession order.”

“What does that mean?” Claire asked.

“The Cartographer never remains in one identity. When one center falls, authority passes to the next keeper.”

“Wren controlled the church operation,” Mercer said.

“Rusk controlled access to the station records,” Cross added.

Everyone looked toward Eleanor.

She had used the word Home.

Eleanor shook her head.

“Home was Nathan’s designation.”

Claire stared.

“Are you saying Nathan became the next keeper?”

“He entered the command center voluntarily,” Rusk said.

“To destroy it,” Claire replied.

“Or to take control of it.”

The hearing screen displayed a final uploaded document.

AUTHORITY TRANSFER CONFIRMED.

NEW CARTOGRAPHER: NATHAN HALE.

Lily shook her head.

“That’s not true.”

Claire looked at the timestamp.

The transfer had occurred twelve minutes before Nathan’s funeral began.

Before the letter landed on the coffin.

Before the first recording named a traitor.

Nathan had already become the person they were searching for.
