Chapter 11 - The Commander at the Window

Claire remembered very little from the night Lily was born.

She remembered white lights, Nathan’s hand around hers, and a nurse carrying the baby toward the window.

She remembered waking later and seeing Nathan standing in the hallway with Colonel Mercer.

At the time, she assumed Mercer had come to congratulate him.

Now Mercer claimed someone had tried to take Lily.

“Who?” Claire asked.

“We never identified the person,” Mercer said. “A nurse received instructions to transfer Lily for an emergency examination. There was no examination.”

Cross lowered his weapon slightly.

“How did Nathan stop it?”

“He saw the nurse entering a service elevator. He followed her and recovered Lily before she reached the loading area.”

“What happened to the nurse?” Claire asked.

“She disappeared before hospital security arrived.”

“Why wasn’t I told?”

“Nathan believed the attempt was connected to his mother. Eleanor had used Operation Lantern before her official death. If someone knew Nathan’s child existed, they could use Lily to force him to reopen the network.”

Claire felt anger cut through her grief.

“He had no right to hide that from me.”

“No,” Mercer said. “He did not.”

“Why did you lie about meeting Lily?”

“Because Nathan asked me never to connect myself publicly to the hospital incident. He believed the person behind it might watch everyone who knew.”

The recording inside the coffin continued.

“Mercer will tell Claire about the hospital. If he tells the truth, he is not the Cartographer.”

Everyone looked at the tape recorder.

Nathan had anticipated the explanation.

Mercer released a breath.

The message went on.

“The Cartographer will claim not to remember the hospital at all.”

Claire replayed the old audio clip.

Besides Mercer’s voice, a second person could be heard in the distance.

A woman.

“Move the child before the father returns.”

The voice was faint, but familiar.

Claire had heard it recently.

At the funeral.

She searched her memory.

A woman had approached Lily near the church steps, placed a white flower beside the coffin, and said that Nathan had been one of the finest officers she had ever known.

Dr. Evelyn Rusk.

Director of the private medical contractor that supported Operation Lantern.

Her name had appeared on the wall in Nathan’s photograph.

“Rusk was at the hospital,” Claire said.

Mercer listened again.

“That sounds like her.”

Cross searched the red folder.

Rusk had signed medical clearances for nearly every missing person moved through Lantern.

She had also certified Nathan’s supposed death without examining a body.

Voss contacted the officers at the church.

Dr. Rusk was gone.

She had left moments after Wren’s arrest, telling security she had been called to an emergency.

The terminal map showed the activated coastal route ending at an old medical station.

“Rusk is moving Eleanor,” Claire said.

“And possibly Nathan,” Cross replied.

They drove toward the coast.

The medical station stood on a cliff above the sea, surrounded by wind-bent trees and a high concrete wall. It had once been used to treat naval personnel but had closed after storm damage.

A single light shone from an upper window.

Mercer stopped the vehicle beyond the wall.

“No visible guards.”

“That means there are hidden ones,” Voss said.

Lily opened the storybook.

“The mouse enters through the place where the waves cannot reach.”

They followed an old drainage channel beneath the cliff.

The tunnel opened into the station’s lower level.

Inside, rooms were clean and recently occupied. Medical equipment hummed behind glass doors. Identity documents lay on metal tables beside photographs of missing officials.

Claire saw Nathan’s face on one file.

Status: transferred.

Destination: Home.

A shadow crossed the corridor ahead.

Cross signaled for everyone to remain still.

An elderly woman stepped into the light.

Her silver hair was cut short. Her face was thin, but Claire recognized Nathan’s eyes immediately.

Eleanor Hale.

Lily stared at her.

The woman looked from Claire to the child.

“Nathan said you would come.”

Claire moved forward.

“Where is he?”

Eleanor glanced toward the upper floor.

“He came here to free me.”

“Is he still here?”

“No.”

“Who took him?”

Eleanor’s expression tightened.

“He went willingly.”

Footsteps sounded above them.

Dr. Evelyn Rusk appeared at the top of the stairs, wearing a white coat.

“You should not have brought the child,” she said.

Lily held her mother’s hand.

Rusk descended slowly.

Mercer moved to block her path.

“You altered Nathan’s death report.”

“I protected him from Wren.”

“You tried to take Lily from the hospital.”

Rusk looked genuinely surprised.

“Is that what Nathan believed?”

The lights went out.

A steel door slammed between Claire and the others.

Emergency lighting illuminated the corridor.

Claire and Lily were alone with Rusk.

Rusk removed a small device from her pocket.

“You want to know where Nathan went,” she said.

Claire placed herself in front of Lily.

“Yes.”

Rusk activated the device.

A live camera feed appeared.

Nathan stood in a room with no windows.

Beside him was a man whose face remained outside the frame.

Nathan looked directly at the camera.

Then he raised one finger to his lips.

Rusk whispered, “Your husband is standing beside the Cartographer.”
