Chapter 9 - The Fall of Grant Mercer
The investigation moved quickly.
Kyle surrendered his laptop and financial records. They revealed that Grant had created fake development companies, manipulated investors, and purchased Kyle’s debts to control him.
The receipts for Paige’s mother’s jewelry had been forged.
The witnesses prepared to accuse Paige of instability had been paid.
One supposed medical statement came from a doctor who had never met her.
Tabitha claimed Grant had deceived her.
However, recordings showed her discussing the plan in detail. She had known about the forged petition and had helped spread the false stories.
Grant was charged with fraud, conspiracy, forgery, and theft.
Tabitha faced charges related to the fraudulent filings and stolen property.
Neither remained confident when they were led from Rosehaven.
As the officer guided Grant toward a vehicle, he looked at Paige.
“You think this makes you powerful?”
Paige stood beneath the stone archway.
“No. It makes me free.”
Tabitha removed the diamond bracelet from her wrist and handed it to the investigator.
For the first time, she looked ordinary.
“This mansion ruined everyone,” she muttered.
Paige shook her head.
“The mansion did nothing. You ruined yourselves trying to own it.”
Kyle cooperated fully with prosecutors. Because he had participated in parts of the plan, he was not spared consequences. He accepted responsibility for financial misconduct and agreed to repay those harmed through the surrender of his trust income.
Before his court hearing, he visited Paige in the rose garden.
“I don’t expect forgiveness,” he said.
Paige continued watering the bushes.
“Good. Forgiveness is not something you request before you’ve changed.”
Kyle nodded.
“I hated Dad for trusting you more.”
“He trusted you too. That’s why your trust gave you time to escape your debts.”
“I used it to create more.”
“You can still become someone he would recognize.”
Kyle looked at the white roses.
“Do you think he knew I would turn against Grant?”
“I think he hoped you would.”
Kyle’s eyes filled with tears.
“I’m sorry, Paige.”
This time, she believed him.
But belief was not the same as forgetting.
She told him they would rebuild their relationship slowly, through truth rather than promises.
