Chapter 7 - The Trap Is Planted
Samuel finally explained Theodore’s full plan.
Months before his death, Theodore had installed legally registered audio security devices around the estate after Grant attempted to access private financial records.
Warning notices had been included in the estate’s security policy and posted near every entrance.
Any conversation on the grounds could be recorded.
The devices had captured Grant discussing Kyle’s debt, forging receipts, and planning to pressure Paige.
But Theodore wanted more than evidence of dishonesty.
He wanted undeniable proof that they intended to manipulate the inheritance condition.
“The sealed amendment is hidden in the garden,” Samuel said. “I do not know the exact location.”
“Why hide it?”
“Because Theodore believed Grant would reveal his plan only when he felt victory was certain. The person who openly attempts to remove you must do so while standing on Rosehaven property.”
Paige understood.
“The envelope is the trigger.”
“Yes. Once you recover and open it after a qualifying threat, ownership transfers to you. The recordings are released to investigators.”
“What if they never come onto the property?”
“Then you continue living here under the existing trust.”
Paige almost laughed.
Grant’s arrogance made that unlikely.
She and Samuel prepared quietly.
Mrs. Alvarez checked the rose beds each morning but did not disturb the soil. Samuel alerted a county investigator who had already begun examining Grant’s property companies.
Paige stopped responding publicly to accusations.
She allowed rumors to spread that she was emotionally exhausted and considering leaving Rosehaven.
Within days, Grant sent her a message.
You should accept reality before Tabitha handles it herself.
Paige replied with only four words.
She is welcome to try.
The next morning, Kyle called.
His voice shook.
“Grant says the court petition will be filed tomorrow.”
“What petition?”
“He has statements claiming you threatened employees and neglected the property. He’ll request an emergency manager.”
“All lies.”
“I know.”
“Then testify.”
Kyle remained silent.
“Are you at Rosehaven?” he finally asked.
“In the rose garden.”
After the call ended, Paige placed her phone in her apron pocket and continued pruning.
At nine thirty, the front gates opened.
A white convertible drove up the stone path.
Tabitha stepped out wearing satin and diamonds.
She did not know investigators were waiting inside the mansion.
