Chapter 13 - BENEATH THE FOUNDATION

Police searched the basement twice.
They found no person.
They did find a hidden wall.
Behind shelves of canned food was a narrow steel door that did not appear on the house plans.
Clarissa remembered Nathan’s warning.
Do not let Parker open the basement.
The door had already been forced.
Its lock lay broken on the floor.
Beyond it, stone steps descended beneath the foundation.
The air smelled of damp earth and old paper.
Clarissa wanted Dustin kept upstairs, but he refused to leave.
“I know this place.”
She looked at him.
“How?”
“Grandpa showed me in a dream.”
Maya exchanged a worried glance with Clarissa.
Dustin touched the wall.
“He said the house remembers.”
Clarissa wondered how much of his memory had been hidden behind fear, and how much he had transformed into dreams because adults had taught him not to trust what he saw.
They descended with two officers.
The passage ended in a small room containing a desk, an empty safe, and a wall covered with photographs.
Clarissa’s childhood.
Her school.
Her first job.
Her apartment before she met Parker.
Photographs of Dustin from birth through the previous month.
Someone had documented their lives for years.
On the desk was a recent photograph of Parker standing beside the lake.
A handwritten note beneath it read:
HE WILL BETRAY BOTH SIDES.
Maya examined the handwriting.
“Is that your father’s?”
Clarissa nodded.
A second note was addressed directly to her.
Little Star,
If you find this room, the Mercer operation has failed or begun to fail. Do not mistake exposure for victory. Victor Hale is not the architect. He is only the most visible servant.
Clarissa read the sentence twice.
Hale was not the leader.
The note continued.
The first trust was created before you were born. It does not control land. It controls names, identities, and inheritance lines. You are listed under a name I never gave you.
Clarissa’s hands shook.
Beneath the note was a birth certificate.
The mother’s name was correct.
The father’s name was not Thomas Vale.
It was Adrian Cross.
Clarissa stared at the paper.
“That’s impossible.”
Maya placed a hand on her back.
“Could it be forged?”
“Everything could be forged.”
An officer called from the safe.
“There is something inside the lining.”
He removed a small envelope.
It contained a photograph of Thomas Vale with a younger man.
The younger man resembled Clarissa.
Same eyes.
Same jaw.
On the back, Thomas had written:
Adrian survived the fire.
Find him before the trust does.
Clarissa had never heard the name Adrian Cross.
She searched the room and found a newspaper clipping from thirty-five years earlier.
CROSS FAMILY ESTATE DESTROYED IN FIRE.
Five people were presumed dead.
One child was missing.
A seven-year-old boy named Adrian.
Dustin read over her shoulder.
“He was seven like me.”
Clarissa looked at the photograph again.
If Adrian Cross was her biological father, then Thomas had raised her while hiding her identity.
The conspiracy surrounding the Vale land might be part of something older.
Something that began before Parker was born.
A phone rang inside the empty safe.
Everyone stepped back.
The sound came from behind the metal lining.
An officer removed a hidden phone.
It had only one incoming call.
Clarissa answered.
For several seconds, she heard nothing.

Then Parker whispered, “Do not trust Evelyn.”
The line went dead.
