THE VOICE BEHIND THE WALLS / Chapter 10 / 15

Chapter 10 - THE RED DOOR

Clarissa did not return home immediately.

That was what Parker expected.

Instead, Jonah arranged for three copies of the forged trust documents, the partial recording, and the emergency guardianship order to be delivered to separate attorneys.

Maya contacted a federal investigator she knew from a previous reporting project.

Evelyn, after escaping the fire station through another route, sent Clarissa the blueprints of the lake property.

The pumping station’s tunnels connected to an old storm system that ran beneath the north side of the estate.

At the center was a sealed chamber marked with a red maintenance door.

The door had been removed from official plans in 1998.

Thomas Vale had purchased the property the following year.

Clarissa, Maya, and Jonah reached the pumping station shortly after midnight.

Dustin remained in a safe apartment with a retired police officer Jonah trusted.

Clarissa hated leaving him, but she knew Parker wanted to use her fear for Dustin to control every decision.

The pumping station stood among dead trees near the water.

Its windows were boarded.

The main entrance was chained.

Evelyn met them beside a drainage ditch.

“You were followed,” she said.

Jonah checked the road.

“No headlights.”

“Parker does not need headlights.”

They entered through the tunnel.

Water reached their ankles.

After fifty yards, the passage divided.

One route led toward the lake house.

The other descended beneath the pumping station.

Clarissa inserted the red cylinder into a slot beside a steel panel.

A green light appeared.

The wall unlocked.

Behind it was the red door.

Dustin had remembered correctly.

Clarissa touched the paint.

Deep scratches marked the surface.

Someone had tried to open it by force.

Evelyn handed her a small device.

“The cylinder provides the first code. Your fingerprint provides the second.”

“My fingerprint?”

“Your father designed it.”

Clarissa pressed her thumb to the scanner.

The red door opened.

The chamber beyond contained shelves filled with files, hard drives, photographs, and financial records.

A desk stood in the center.

On it rested a tape recorder.

Clarissa pressed play.

Her father’s voice filled the room.

“Clarissa, if you are hearing this, I failed to stop them.”

She covered her mouth.

Thomas continued.

“Victor Hale has spent twenty years acquiring land through fraud, intimidation, and murder. Parker Mercer works for him. Parker’s relationship with you was arranged to gain control of the Vale estate.”

Clarissa closed her eyes.

Hearing the truth in her father’s voice made denial impossible.

“I tried to expose them,” Thomas said. “Nathan Cole helped me collect evidence. Evelyn Shaw created secure locations. But someone inside my legal team betrayed us.”

The tape clicked.

A second recording began.

Victor Hale spoke.

“Once Thomas is gone, Parker marries the daughter. We wait until she trusts him, then move the property into the trust.”

Parker replied.

“And the child?”

“A useful weakness.”

Clarissa’s stomach turned.

Parker had discussed Dustin as though he were a tool.

The recording continued.

Another man spoke.

“If the daughter resists?”

Victor answered.

“Melissa will document instability. Raymond will handle the court.”

Every role was clear.

Parker controlled the marriage.

Melissa controlled the medical record.

Judge Raymond controlled the courts.

Alana controlled the family narrative.

Victor controlled them all.

Then a woman’s voice entered.

“We should kill Clarissa before she produces an heir.”

Maya stared at Clarissa.

The woman was not Melissa.

It was Alana.

Younger, clearer, but unmistakable.

Parker replied, “No. A death so soon after Thomas would create questions.”

Alana said, “Then make her dependent.”

The tape stopped.

Clarissa stood frozen.

This conspiracy had not begun recently.

It had shaped her entire marriage.

Jonah opened the cabinets.

“We have enough to destroy them.”

Evelyn remained near the door.

“No. We have enough to frighten them.”

“What is the difference?” Maya asked.

“Victor Hale owns officers, judges, doctors, and news outlets. Evidence is useful only if it survives.”

Clarissa looked at the shelves.

“Then we send everything out.”

A sound echoed in the tunnel.

Metal striking stone.

Evelyn turned off the chamber lights.

Someone was approaching.

Jonah whispered, “How many exits?”

“One.”

Clarissa held the tape recorder against her chest.

A flashlight appeared beneath the red door.

Then Parker’s voice came through the darkness.

“Clarissa, I know you’re inside.”
