THE VIDEO ON CONNOR’S TABLET / Chapter 12 / 15

Chapter 12 - THE BIRTHDAY BEGINS

The morning of Grace’s birthday arrived bright and warm.

Balloons lined the fence.

Tables covered the lawn.

Guests began arriving before noon.

Emma recognized teachers, neighbors, hospital staff, members of Margaret’s charity board, and the court representative, Ms. Carver.

Lila came carrying a wrapped gift.

She embraced Emma.

“You look tired.”

“I haven’t been sleeping.”

“You should let Sabrina help more.”

Emma forced a smile.

“She has helped enough.”

Lila’s eyes moved toward the house.

“Where is Connor?”

“Getting ready.”

“And Grace?”

“Upstairs.”

In the bedroom, Sabrina braided Grace’s hair.

Her hands trembled.

Grace watched her in the mirror.

“Don’t cry,” the child said.

“I’m not.”

“You are.”

Sabrina wiped her cheek.

“When I was your age, I wanted hair like yours.”

“Why?”

“Because Emma had it.”

Grace looked surprised.

“You were jealous of Mom?”

“For most of my life.”

“Why?”

“Grandma trusted her. Teachers liked her. Dad took her fishing.”

Grace considered this.

“Mom thought Grandma liked you better.”

Sabrina’s hands stopped.

“What?”

“She said you were the daughter who could do everything right.”

Sabrina stared at their reflections.

Years of resentment suddenly appeared smaller and sadder than she had imagined.

“Maybe none of us knew the truth,” she whispered.

Margaret entered carrying the scissors.

“It is time.”

Emma stood outside the room.

Margaret handed her the scissors secretly, following Adrian’s instruction.

A tiny camera had been installed inside the handle.

Hale’s team intercepted its signal.

Adrian would see exactly what they wanted him to see.

Connor hid behind the garden hedge with the tablet.

Daniel and Thomas entered the underground passage through a neighboring property.

Their goal was to open the archive while Adrian watched the party.

At one o’clock, the cake was brought outside.

Guests gathered.

Grace sat at the center table wearing her yellow Easter dress.

Sabrina made a speech.

“My niece has experienced a difficult year. We all know grief can make children behave in unexpected ways.”

Emma clenched her hands.

Ms. Carver listened carefully.

Lila watched Grace.

Sabrina continued.

“Today is about giving her a fresh beginning.”

Grace stood.

“I don’t want a fresh beginning.”

The guests shifted.

Margaret approached.

“Sit down.”

“No.”

This part was not planned.

Emma saw real anger in Grace’s face.

“You told everyone I lie,” Grace said.

Margaret smiled toward the guests.

“She has been emotional.”

“You took pictures of me.”

“Grace.”

“You told Mom the court would take us.”

Whispers moved through the garden.

Ms. Carver looked at Margaret.

Sabrina stepped between them.

“Enough.”

Grace turned toward her.

“And you cut my hair.”

“That is not what happened.”

Connor’s tablet recorded every word.

The scene was becoming more convincing than Adrian could have hoped.

Too convincing.

Margaret placed her hands on Grace’s shoulders.

“Sit.”

Grace struggled.

Sabrina lifted the scissors.

Emma’s entire body resisted the plan.

Grace looked at her mother.

One tiny nod.

Sabrina closed the blades around the braid.

The hair fell.

Grace screamed.

Though they had planned it, the pain in her voice was real.

Guests gasped.

Emma ran across the yard.

“Take your hands off my daughter!”

She struck Sabrina.

Sabrina crashed into the table.

Emma pulled Grace into her arms.

The plan had reached the moment Connor would reveal the recorded video.

But before he stepped from the hedge, his tablet displayed an incoming message.

It came from Daniel.

ARCHIVE OPEN. SOMETHING IS WRONG.

Then another message appeared.

THOMAS LOCKED ME INSIDE.

Connor stared at the screen.

Across the yard, Sabrina whispered to Emma.

“Adrian changed the plan.”

“What?”

“He wants Connor now.”

A black van stopped outside the gate.

The garden lights flickered.

Margaret’s hands began to shake.

Connor stepped from behind the hedge.

“Mom,” he said.

Emma turned.

“You need to see this.”

The tablet contained the recordings of Sabrina and Margaret discussing the drugged lemonade, the court petition, and the guardianship plan.

Guests crowded closer.

Sabrina lunged toward Connor, following the staged scene.

“Give it to me!”

Emma blocked her.

The tablet screen changed.

Daniel’s message disappeared.

A live video opened.

It showed the underground archive.

Daniel stood inside a glass chamber.

Thomas was outside it, entering commands.

Then Thomas turned toward the camera.

“Emma,” he said through the tablet, “do not believe what Daniel tells you.”

Behind him, hundreds of files filled the archive screens.

Photographs.

Names.

Patient numbers.

One folder bore Emma’s name.

Another bore Grace’s.

Another bore Connor’s.

Emma touched the screen.

“What did you do?”

Thomas answered.

“I protected the truth from Daniel.”

Daniel struck the glass.

His voice came faintly through the recording.

“He’s the Steward.”

The image froze.

The power died.

A man’s voice spoke behind Emma.

“Delete the video, Connor.”

She turned.

Daniel stood beneath the birthday banner.

For one impossible moment, Emma believed he had escaped the chamber.

Then she saw his clothes.

His face.

The absence of the scar near his temple.

This man looked exactly as Daniel had looked before the crash.

Grace whispered, “Daddy?”

The man smiled at her.

“No,” Emma said.

May you like

He reached into his jacket.

“My name is Samuel Vale.”
