Chapter 11 - REHEARSING THE LIE

For the next three days, the family prepared two birthday parties.
The first was the party Adrian expected to see.
Sabrina called guests and confirmed the celebration. She ordered decorations, hired caterers, and complained publicly that Emma was too overwhelmed to plan anything herself.
Margaret contacted the court representative and expressed concern about Grace’s behavior.
Emma returned to the hospital for one shift, allowing Lila to observe her exhaustion.
Daniel remained hidden with Thomas at Hale’s apartment.
The children stayed with Emma but pretended not to know their father was alive.
The second party existed beneath the first.
Hale arranged for trusted officers to wait beyond the neighborhood.
Thomas studied the house’s original plans.
Daniel listened to hours of family recordings, trying to recover the authorization phrase.
Connor copied files from every device he could access.
Grace had the most difficult role.
She had to allow Sabrina and Margaret to appear cruel.
“You will never be alone with them,” Emma promised.
“But people will think I’m bad.”
“Only for a little while.”
Grace touched the uneven section of her hair.
“What if Aunt Sabrina really hurts me?”
Sabrina stood in the doorway.
“I won’t.”
Grace looked at her.
“You already did.”
Sabrina had no answer.
Emma almost ended the plan then.
No evidence was worth asking Grace to face the people who had frightened her.
Grace surprised them.
“I still want to do it,” she said.
Emma knelt.
“You don’t have to prove anything.”
“I know.”
“Then why?”
Grace looked at Connor.
“Because they think children don’t notice things.”
Connor nodded.
Sabrina sat beside Grace.
“I owe you an apology.”
Grace waited.
“I cut your hair. I threatened you. I made you believe your mother might be taken away. I told myself I was protecting Connor, but I was protecting myself too.”
“Are you sorry because Mom found out?”
Sabrina closed her eyes.
“No. I’m sorry because you were afraid and I chose to use that fear.”
Grace considered this.
“I don’t forgive you.”
“You shouldn’t. Not yet.”
“Will you still cut my braid at the party?”
Sabrina looked horrified.
“That was never part of the original plan.”
Margaret entered.
“It is now.”
Everyone turned.
She placed her phone on the table.
A new instruction from Adrian appeared.
CREATE A PUBLIC BREAKDOWN.
HAIR IS EFFECTIVE.
Emma felt fury rise.
“No.”
Margaret said, “If we refuse, he will know.”
“We will find another way.”
Grace looked at her long braid.
Her hair had not been cut since Daniel’s funeral. She said it was because he had loved braiding it, though his braids were always uneven.
“What happens if we do it?” she asked.
Emma shook her head.
“We’re not doing it.”
“What happens?”
Connor answered.
“Everyone watches Aunt Sabrina. They won’t watch me.”
The plan formed silently.
Connor would remain near the hedge with the tablet. The tablet would stream live to Hale and several secure servers. If Adrian attempted to erase one copy, others would survive.
Grace looked at Emma.
“It’s hair.”
“It’s your choice.”
“I choose to use it.”
Emma’s eyes filled.
“You should not have to be brave this way.”
Grace leaned against her.
“Dad said brave doesn’t mean you aren’t scared.”
Daniel had said that.
That night, Emma visited him.
He sat beside Hale’s window listening to the recorder.
“Do you remember the authorization phrase?” she asked.
“Not yet.”
She sat beside him.
He studied her face as though memorizing it again.
“I remember our first date.”
Emma’s breath caught.
“You took me to a restaurant that had closed.”
“You refused to admit it.”
“I said we should wait because they might reopen.”
“We sat on the sidewalk for twenty minutes.”
“You laughed at me.”
“I liked you.”
“You kissed me in the parking lot.”
Daniel smiled.
“That part is still unclear.”
Emma touched his hand.
He did not pull away.
“What if Adrian changed how you felt about me?”
“He could remove details. Maybe even years. But when I saw you at the clinic, I was afraid because I felt something before I knew why.”
“What?”
“Home.”
Emma looked down.
Daniel lifted her chin.
“I don’t know who I was before Adrian changed me. I don’t know whether Daniel Reeves was a name given to me or one I chose. But I know who I became with you.”
They kissed gently.
It was not a reunion.
Not yet.
It was the beginning of one.
Connor entered carrying the recorder.
“I found something.”
He played a recording from four years earlier.
The family was camping.
Grace asked Daniel what password he would choose if he had to protect the entire world.
Daniel laughed.
“Easy. The night Emma taught the stars our names.”
Emma remembered.
Their first camping trip after the twins were born. She had pointed toward constellations and invented one for each family member.
Connor said, “That’s the phrase.”
Daniel listened again.
“The night Emma taught the stars our names.”
Thomas tested it against the encrypted access program.
The screen displayed AUTHORIZATION ACCEPTED.
They had the phrase.
The next morning, a package arrived.
Inside was a replacement pair of silver scissors.
A card read:
MAKE IT CONVINCING.
Emma turned the card over.
On the back was a photograph of Daniel entering Hale’s apartment.
Adrian knew he had escaped.
