Chapter 8 - the man Ryan promised to pay after Emma died)

Daniel Cross met Detective Hale before he met Emma.
Hale insisted on it.
By the time Emma was allowed to speak with him, police had already confirmed enough of Daniel's story to take it seriously.
They met in Melanie's law office.
Daniel looked nothing like Emma expected.
No expensive suit.
No threatening posture.
He was in his early forties, tired-looking, with a wedding ring and a crease between his eyebrows that never disappeared.
He owned a small construction investment company.
Ryan had convinced him to join a development project eighteen months earlier.
The project collapsed.
Daniel lost money.
Ryan lost more.
Then Ryan borrowed privately to cover previous borrowing.
A familiar spiral.
"Why didn't you sue him?" Emma asked.
"I was going to."
"What stopped you?"
Daniel looked ashamed.
"He told me you were sick."
Emma's jaw tightened.
"He used my cancer?"
"He said your insurance would eventually settle the debt."
Sarah's voice went cold.
"He told you his wife was going to die?"
Daniel shook his head quickly.
"Not exactly."
"What exactly?"
Daniel looked at Emma.
"He said there was a policy. He said if the worst happened, everybody would be made whole."
Emma felt nausea rise.
"When?"
"Late February."
Less than three weeks after diagnosis.
"Did he say how soon?"
"No."
"Did he say he was doing anything to make it happen?"
"No. If he had, I would have gone to police."
Sarah did not look convinced.
Daniel continued.
"I thought he was a desperate man saying something ugly. Then he started talking differently."
"How?"
"He asked whether I would delay legal action for ninety days."
"Why ninety?"
"He said his financial position would be completely different by then."
Emma looked at Hale.
He had already written the date.
Ninety days.
Approximately the length of her initial chemotherapy plan.
Daniel said, "Then last week he called me drunk."
Emma's stomach tightened.
"What did he say?"
"He said his mother had gone too far."
Sarah leaned forward.
"Those exact words?"
"Yes."
"What did you say?"
"I asked what he meant."
"And?"
"He said, I wanted access, not this."
The room went silent.
Emma felt the sentence hit like cold water.
Access.
Medical access.
Financial access.
Daniel continued.
"He said he should have stopped her earlier."
Emma's voice shook.
"Did he say what she did?"
"No. He hung up."
"Why contact me now?"
Daniel looked at her for a long moment.
"Because yesterday Ryan called again."
Emma stopped breathing.
"He told me if anybody asked, I was supposed to say the insurance conversation was my idea."
Sarah stood.
"What?"
"I refused."
"What did he do?"
"He threatened to tell my investors I had pressured him over a sick wife."
Daniel removed his phone.
"I recorded the rest."
He played it.
Ryan's voice filled the room.
Tense.
Fast.
Recognizable.
"All you need to say is we discussed the policy generally."
Daniel answered, "I'm not lying for you."
"You don't understand what this could do."
"I understand your wife is alive."
A pause.
Then Ryan said something that ended any remaining doubt in Emma.
"She wasn't supposed to find out this early."
Daniel's recording ended.
Nobody moved.
Emma looked at Detective Hale.
"Arrest him."
Hale did not respond to emotion.
"We're close."
"Close?"
"We need the prosecutor to approve the strongest charges supported by evidence."
"He knew."
"Yes."
"He forged my signature."
"Likely."
"He knew his mother was giving me drugs."
"Yes."
"He planned to take control of my finances."
"Evidence strongly suggests that."
"And you're close?"
Hale leaned forward.
"Mrs. Bennett, I understand why that sounds unbearable. But if we move too early, we risk losing pieces we can prove if we wait."
Emma stood.
"I have been waiting since the day I got sick."
Sarah stood beside her.
Hale's voice softened.
"Then don't wait anymore. Live somewhere safe. Let us do the part that requires patience."
Emma left angry.
But he was right.
That was another painful thing she had to accept.
She could not control the investigation.
So she controlled what she could.
She filed for divorce.
Ryan was served the next morning.
His response came fifteen minutes later.
You can't be serious.
Emma did not answer.
Then.
After everything I have done for you?
No answer.
Then.
Mom was right about you.
Emma blocked him.
Her attorney obtained an emergency financial order preventing Ryan from moving money from shared accounts.
The insurance company froze beneficiary changes pending investigation.
The clinic documented Emma's medication irregularities.
Sarah collected Emma's clothes with a police escort.
Every step closed another door Ryan once assumed would remain open.
Then came the final lab result on the vial.
Detective Hale visited Sarah's house personally.
Emma knew before he spoke.
"It contained two substances not prescribed to you."
She felt her throat tighten.
"What kind?"
"One could dangerously lower blood sugar. The other could cause significant sedation."
Sarah sat beside her.
Emma's voice was distant.
"Together?"
"In someone undergoing chemotherapy and recovering from surgery, they could be very dangerous."
"Could they kill me?"
Hale paused.
"Yes."
Emma looked out the window.
Children were riding bicycles on the opposite sidewalk.
A woman carried grocery bags from a car.
The world continued.
"I took it before?"
"We believe so."
"How many times?"
"We cannot know yet."
Emma remembered every unexplained collapse.
The shaking.
The sweating.
The nights she woke confused.
Carol standing nearby.
Ryan saying chemo brain.
Something inside Emma went quiet.
Not numb.
Clear.
"Did Carol have access to those substances?"
"Yes."
"How?"
"One appears connected to medication she previously managed for another family member. The second was recovered from her house."
Emma nodded.
"Then arrest her."
Hale's phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
Then stood.
"I think that is happening now."
At 4:22 that afternoon, Carol Bennett was arrested.
The television news showed her leaving her house between two officers.
She wore sunglasses.
Her mouth was a hard line.
She did not look afraid.
She looked offended.
Emma watched for ten seconds.
Then turned off the television.
Sarah asked, "You okay?"
Emma whispered, "Ryan is next."
Sarah looked at her.
Emma was no longer crying.
She was right.
Ryan was arrested the following morning.
But when police opened the encrypted folder from his hidden recorder, they discovered something that changed the case again.
Ryan had recorded Carol threatening him.
He had recorded her admitting she changed Emma's medication.
May you like
And he had recorded something else.
Carol saying that if Ryan refused to cooperate, she would make sure Emma died and Ryan took the blame.
