THE USB THAT FROZE THE ROOM / Chapter 5 / 15

Chapter 5 - The Basement Door)

The smoke was not coming from inside the storage room.

It was being pushed beneath the door.

Nathan dropped to one knee.

"Stay back."

Rachel used her phone flashlight.

A gray ribbon of smoke curled through the gap.

"Fire?"

"No."

Nathan touched the door.

"It's cold."

Rachel understood.

"Someone's trying to make us think it's a fire."

Nathan looked around the room.

"Or force us away from something."

His eyes went to the recorder in Rachel's hands.

They both became silent.

Nathan stood.

He pulled a metal shelving bracket loose and struck the old wooden door near the latch.

Once.

Twice.

On the fourth impact, the frame split.

He kicked the door open.

Smoke poured through the corridor.

Nathan covered his mouth.

Rachel followed.

Ten feet away, a theatrical smoke canister rolled slowly across the floor.

Nathan stared at it.

"Victoria doesn't know how to use something like that."

"No."

"But security does."

Rachel looked toward the ceiling camera.

Its indicator light was off.

Nathan took the network recorder.

They went upstairs.

Marjorie met them in the foyer holding Elara.

"Someone pulled the fire alarm, but there is no fire."

Nathan immediately took his daughter.

"Where's Victoria?"

"She left twenty minutes ago."

Nathan called estate security.

Their contractor was Halcyon Residential Protection, a company owned by former police officer Gregory Shaw.

Shaw himself answered.

Nathan asked him to come immediately.

Rachel expected him to refuse.

Instead he arrived forty minutes later.

Gregory Shaw was fifty, lean, composed, and slightly too interested in the network recorder.

"You should have called before touching old equipment," he said.

Nathan's voice was flat.

"Why?"

"It could corrupt the data."

Rachel watched his eyes.

"Can it still be recovered?"

"Maybe."

Nathan did not hand it over.

"I'll have another company look at it."

Shaw smiled.

"Of course."

Then he looked toward Rachel.

"You must be the employee Victoria reported."

Rachel said nothing.

Nathan stepped between them.

"Leave."

Shaw's expression hardened briefly.

Then he walked out.

Nathan waited until his vehicle disappeared.

"He's involved."

Rachel nodded.

"But involved in what?"

They took the recorder to a forensic computer specialist in Richmond.

Nathan insisted on driving himself.

Elara came with them.

Rachel sat beside the baby in the back seat.

The technician, Sanjay Patel, spent four hours examining the damaged storage system.

At 7:20 p.m., he found fragments.

Not continuous video.

Snapshots.

Logs.

Audio segments.

One image showed Victoria entering the nursery at 10:43 on the morning Elara's bruise appeared.

Another showed Gregory Shaw remotely disabling the camera.

A third showed Victoria carrying an amber medicine bottle.

Nathan stared at the screen.

"Copy everything."

Sanjay inserted a new USB drive.

Rachel watched the progress bar.

There was enough to challenge Victoria's complaint.

But not enough to explain Amelia.

Then Sanjay opened a corrupted directory.

"Interesting."

"What?"

"This recorder was connected to another local device."

"What device?"

"Camera identifier DRESS-04."

Nathan frowned.

"Dressing room."

Sanjay nodded.

"There are deleted fragments from months ago."

"Can you recover them?"

"Some."

They waited.

At 9:13, a grainy image appeared.

Amelia Kensington stood in the dressing room.

Alive.

Three days before her death.

Victoria stood with her.

The timestamp matched November 6.

Rachel leaned forward.

There was no audio.

Amelia appeared furious.

She held a folder.

Victoria reached for it.

Amelia pulled away.

Then Gregory Shaw entered.

Nathan stopped breathing.

The next frame showed Shaw blocking the door.

The next showed Victoria taking the folder from Amelia.

The recording ended.

Nathan stared at the black screen.

Rachel whispered, "That's the day the bank box was closed."

Nathan did not answer.

Sanjay looked uncomfortable.

"There's one more file."

He opened it.

Audio only.

Amelia's voice filled the room.

"If anything happens to me, Nathan needs to know what you did."

Victoria responded.

"You don't know what you're talking about."

"I have copies."

"Where?"

"You'll never find all of them."

A chair scraped.

Then Gregory Shaw spoke.

"Victoria, we need to end this."

The audio cut.

Nathan stood so abruptly his chair fell backward.

Rachel reached for him.

He walked away.

At the far wall, he pressed both hands against a table and lowered his head.

Rachel looked at Sanjay.

"Copy it."

He nodded.

Ten minutes later he handed Rachel a silver USB drive.

"Keep this somewhere safe."

Nathan returned.

He looked at the USB.

Then at Rachel.

"We go to the police."

They never made it.

When they reached the estate at 10:36 p.m., two police vehicles were waiting.

So was Victoria.

She stood beside an attorney.

And beside a woman from child protective services.

Victoria looked at Nathan with carefully controlled sadness.

"I'm sorry," she said.

Nathan stopped.

"For what?"

The attorney stepped forward.

"Mr. Kensington, an emergency petition has been filed regarding your daughter's safety."

Nathan tightened his grip around Elara's carrier.

"What petition?"

The attorney opened a folder.

Rachel saw the words temporary guardianship.

May you like

Victoria's voice was almost gentle.

"Nathan, they're taking Elara away from you."
