Chapter 3 - The Woman in the Passenger Seat)

Daniel saw Emily through the diner window and stopped.
Avery followed his gaze. Even across the parking lot, Emily saw the moment the other woman understood whom they had found. Avery reached for Daniel's arm. He moved away too late.
Grace stood. "Stay here."
"No," Emily said. "I have spent three months staying where people put me."
She walked outside with the forged authorization in one hand. Rain gathered in her hair and darkened the shoulders of her blouse. Daniel came toward her, leaving Avery beside the SUV.
"You turned off location sharing," he said.
"You tracked me?"
"I was worried. You're pregnant and upset."
"You announced our divorce in front of your family two hours ago. You don't get to describe my reaction as a medical condition."
His eyes flicked toward the paper. "What did Grace tell you?"
Not Who is that woman. Not Let me explain.
What did Grace tell you?
Emily held up the authorization. "Did you sign my name?"
Daniel looked over his shoulder at Avery. That answer was almost as clear as a confession.
"The company needed short-term liquidity," he said. "I was going to explain."
"My house is collateral."
"Our house."
"Purchased with my father's insurance money and renovated with my earnings."
"You always do that," he snapped. "You turn marriage into a ledger."
Grace came outside. "Daniel, be careful."
"This is a private conversation."
"It stopped being private when someone submitted a fraudulent document to a federally insured bank."
Avery opened the passenger door. "Daniel, we should go."
Emily looked at her. "Were you at the Marlowe with my husband?"
Avery's practiced composure slipped.
Daniel stepped between them. "This isn't the place."
"It was the place when you charged the room to our card."
For one suspended second, Daniel looked ashamed. Emily remembered the young man who had proposed to her in a half-renovated house, kneeling on bare floorboards with sawdust in his hair. She had loved that man without caution.
The man in the rain chose silence.
Emily folded the authorization. "I am staying with Nora. You will communicate through Grace about the company and through me in writing about the pregnancy. Do not come to Nora's apartment."
"You can't keep my child from me."
"I told you about your child forty minutes ago. You have not once asked if the baby is healthy."
Daniel's face changed.
The truth landed on him visibly, but Emily no longer had the strength to help him carry it.
She left with Grace. In the rearview mirror, Avery and Daniel argued beside the SUV.
Nora lived in a third-floor apartment above a bakery. She opened the door wearing dinosaur pajamas, took Emily's purse, and asked only, "Tea, shower, or lawyer?"
"All three."
By midnight, Emily had written a timeline of every strange event from the previous four months. The hotel charges. Daniel's late nights. Melissa's message. Missing trust files. The forged signature. A merger Emily had never heard about.
Nora read the list. "This isn't just an affair."
"No. The affair may be the least organized part of it."
At one fifteen, Daniel sent a message.
The baby matters. I handled tonight badly. Come home tomorrow and we will talk.
Two minutes later, another message arrived.
Please do not let Grace turn this into a war.
Emily showed Nora.
"He skipped directly from apology to blaming your lawyer," Nora said.
"He also didn't deny Avery."
Emily slept for ninety minutes. At dawn, she woke to twenty-three missed calls: twelve from Daniel, seven from Ruth, three from Melissa, and one from an unknown number.
The unknown caller had left a voicemail.
"Mrs. Mercer, my name is Nathan Brooks. I was hired by Thomas Mercer to review the company accounts before he died. If Grace Bell has spoken to you, then the safeguard has been triggered. Do not access the company server from a device Daniel can reach. Someone deleted seven years of transaction records last night. I kept a copy."
Emily listened again.

At the end of the message, Nathan added one sentence in a lower voice.
"The transfers were authorized with Daniel's credentials, but the money did not go to Daniel."
