Chapter 7 - Breakfast with the Truth

Before sunrise, a forensic officer photographed the kitchen.
The broken plate, damaged telephone, overturned chair, and marks on the wall were documented. Then the officers placed everything back as closely as possible, allowing the room to appear normal from the doorway.
Detective Grant asked Margaret whether she felt able to continue.
She looked at the lace tablecloth and remembered all the Sunday breakfasts she had served there before Brandon returned.
“Yes.”
Together, they prepared the meal.
Margaret cracked eggs into a pan. Grant sliced fruit. The ordinary actions steadied her.
“You don’t have to prove that you’re fearless,” he told her.
“I’m not fearless.”
“That’s not required.”
“What is required?”
“That you tell the truth.”
At eight fifteen, Brandon’s bedroom door opened.
Margaret lifted the coffee pot.
Grant sat at the table with his identification and the case file inside his bag. Two officers waited out of sight.
Brandon’s footsteps approached.
“Finally listening, Mom?”
Then he entered the kitchen and saw the detective.
The scene unfolded exactly as Grant had predicted. Brandon denied everything, then blamed Margaret, then demanded to know what she had revealed.
When the recording played, he attempted to interrupt.
“That was taken out of context.”
Grant allowed the audio to continue.
Brandon’s own voice described the forged papers, the financial pressure, and his plan to portray Margaret as incapable.
When it ended, Grant read Brandon his rights.
The uniformed officer entered the kitchen.
Brandon looked toward Margaret.
“You’re letting them arrest your own son?”
Margaret’s heart ached, but she did not lower her eyes.
“You made your choices as my son. Now you will answer for them as a man.”
Brandon was escorted through the hallway.
Outside, Mrs. Parker stood on her porch watching in disbelief. Brandon had spent years presenting himself as a devoted caregiver. The image vanished in less than a minute.
Before entering the police vehicle, he turned back toward the house.
Margaret was standing in the kitchen window.

She did not wave.
She closed the curtain.
