Chapter 6 - Dinner the Night Before

The confrontation began over a plate of roast chicken and potatoes.
Margaret had prepared dinner while Brandon paced through the house, repeatedly checking his telephone.
When he entered the kitchen, his expression was cold.
“Did you call the bank?”
Margaret continued arranging the plates.
“Yes.”
Brandon pulled out a chair.
“Why?”
“Because it is my account.”
His hand struck the back of the chair, sending it sideways across the floor.
Margaret flinched but remained standing.
“You embarrassed me,” he said. “They treated me like a criminal.”
“You transferred my money.”
“I was investing it.”
“You did not ask me.”
“I shouldn’t have to ask. I live here. I take care of you.”
Margaret looked directly at him.
“You live here because I allowed you to.”
The sentence changed the room.
Brandon swept one dinner plate from the table. It struck the floor and broke. Margaret stepped backward, her shoulder touching the refrigerator.
The recorder inside the recipe tin captured every word.
Brandon moved closer but did not touch her again.
“You are going to call the bank tomorrow,” he said. “You will tell them you made a mistake.”
“No.”
“You’ll restore my access.”
“No.”
His face hardened.
“You have no idea what I have sacrificed for you.”
Margaret thought of her sold car, her missing money, her friendships, and the forged document.
“I know exactly what you have taken.”
Brandon raised his voice and threatened to tell everyone she was confused. He claimed he could have her removed from the house within days. He said no one would believe an elderly woman over the son who had cared for her.
Then he pointed toward the broken plate.
“You will clean that up before morning.”
He left the kitchen and slammed his bedroom door.
Margaret stood alone in the silence.
Her hands shook as she opened the recipe tin and removed the recorder.
The red light was still blinking.
She called Detective Grant from the telephone Ruth had secretly given her.
“He said everything,” Margaret whispered.
Grant’s voice remained calm.

“Lock your bedroom door. Officers will stay nearby tonight. Tomorrow morning, we finish this.”
For the first time, Margaret did not clean up the evidence Brandon had left behind.
