Chapter 9 - The Family Emily Chose
Charles Baines was arrested three weeks after the press conference.
Investigators found evidence that he had authorized the threatening message to frighten Emily away from reopening the fire case. They also uncovered destroyed records, false corporate filings, and payments to former inspectors.
He denied everything.
The evidence said otherwise.
Several former executives agreed to testify.
The investigation expanded beyond the Carter family’s building. Other neglected Vale Urban Properties buildings had produced complaints, injuries, and forced displacements.
Nathan cooperated fully.
Without his company title, he spent more time at home.
At first, he felt useless.
His entire adult identity had been connected to Vale International. Now every news report repeated his family’s failures.
Emily found him one night standing alone near the windows.
“You regret it,” she said.
“No.”
“You can tell me.”
Nathan turned.
“I regret that doing the right thing feels brave only because so many people did the wrong thing first.”
Emily joined him.
Far below, traffic moved through Manhattan like streams of light.
“I should have told you.”
“Yes.”
She looked at him, surprised by his directness.
Nathan continued.
“You should have told me the children were your siblings. You should have told me about the building. You should have told me someone was threatening you.”
Emily lowered her eyes.
“I know.”
“But I understand why you didn’t.”
“That doesn’t make it right.”
“No.”
She waited for anger.
Nathan took her hand.
“We built our marriage around two silences. Yours and my family’s. We cannot keep pretending love makes silence harmless.”
Emily nodded slowly.
“So what happens now?”
“We tell the truth, even when it is ugly.”
“All of it?”
“All of it.”
Emily finally told him about the nightmares, the financial panic, and the way she sometimes checked the children’s rooms at night to make sure they were still breathing.
Nathan admitted that he had spent years trying to prove he was different from his father while continuing to benefit from everything his father built.
They began attending counseling separately and together.
Emily also returned to the dream she had abandoned at nineteen.
She applied to a nursing program.
When the acceptance letter arrived, she stared at it for ten minutes before opening it.
Lily bounced beside her.
“What does it say?”
Emily read the first line.
Then she covered her mouth with one hand.
Paul looked over her shoulder.
“You got in.”
Johnny grinned.
Nathan lifted Emily off the floor in a careful embrace, mindful of her healing side.
Margaret funded a scholarship at the nursing school, but she placed it in the names of Daniel and Rose Carter rather than the Vale family.
Emily initially objected.
Margaret said, “It is not a gift to you. It is one small return of something that should never have been taken.”
The other fire survivors helped determine how the restitution fund would operate. Instead of forcing families through years of litigation, the fund used independent advocates and transparent standards.
Nathan sold the Vale family’s private island, two aircraft, and several luxury properties to contribute to the payments.
Margaret sold the mansion where she had lived with Richard.
When reporters asked whether the family had lost its fortune, Nathan replied, “We lost property. Other people lost parents.”
Six months after the bedroom revelation, Emily’s surgical site had fully healed.
The scars remained.
For the first time, she stopped hiding them from Nathan.
