THE TRUTH BENEATH HER ROBE / Chapter 6 / 10

Chapter 6 - The Envelope Beneath the Bed

The envelope had remained hidden beneath Emily’s side of the bed since the day she moved into the penthouse.

Inside were five photographs.

The first showed Emily with her parents before the fire.

The second showed Johnny, Paul, and Lily at the hospital.

The third showed the apartment building surrounded by emergency vehicles.

The fourth was a copy of the settlement agreement.

The fifth was a recent photograph of the four siblings standing together at Johnny’s school ceremony.

Emily kept the envelope because she feared forgetting who she had been before she became responsible for everyone else.

On the night Nathan found the bloodstain, Emily had been reaching beneath the bed for that envelope.

She had received an anonymous message earlier that evening.

Stop asking questions about the Queens property.

She had not been asking questions.

At least, not recently.

Several years earlier, Emily had contacted former tenants and searched public property records. She stopped after realizing the legal costs could threaten the children’s stability.

Someone had discovered her old investigation.

The message included a photograph of Lily entering school.

Emily’s first instinct was to run.

She packed a small bag and took the envelope from beneath the bed. When she lifted it, pain pulled sharply along her side.

That was when the stain appeared.

Nathan entered the room moments later.

He saw her trembling on the bed and believed she was injured.

Emily realized she could no longer hide the truth.

She revealed the bandage, the scars, and the children’s photograph.

Then Margaret opened the door.

After Margaret admitted the building had belonged to the Vale family, Nathan stood completely still.

Emily had never seen him look at his mother that way.

“You knew?” he asked.

Margaret’s eyes filled with tears.

“Not before the fire.”

“But afterward.”

“Yes.”

“How long afterward?”

“Six months.”

Nathan stepped back as though she had struck him.

“You knew for more than thirteen years.”

“I was afraid.”

“Of what? Losing money?”

“Losing you.”

“You lost me the moment you chose silence.”

Margaret flinched.

Emily pressed one hand against her side.

Nathan noticed immediately.

“We are not doing this now. The doctor is coming.”

“There is more,” Emily said.

She showed him the message on her phone.

Nathan read it twice.

Margaret moved closer.

“When did you receive this?”

“Tonight.”

“Who knew you were investigating?”

“I contacted former tenants years ago.”

Margaret looked toward the doorway.

“Charles.”

Nathan’s expression hardened.

“Charles Baines?”

“He handled the settlements,” Margaret said. “He also knows the original records still exist.”

“Where are they?”

Margaret hesitated.

“In my private safe.”

Emily stared at her.

“You kept them?”

“I told myself it was because destroying them would be worse.”

“But you never released them.”

“No.”

A knock sounded at the outer penthouse door.

Nathan called security and confirmed it was Dr. Patel.

While the doctor examined Emily privately, Nathan waited in the living room with Margaret.

Johnny emerged from the hallway.

“What happened?”

Nathan looked at the teenager and understood that another lie had to end.

“Your sister is stable. Her old injury needs treatment, but the doctor says she will recover.”

Johnny’s shoulders relaxed slightly.

Then he saw Margaret crying.

“What did she do?”

Margaret lowered her eyes.

Nathan answered.

“She told us the truth about the building.”

Johnny’s expression changed.

He had known more than Emily realized.

“You people knew,” he said.

Margaret whispered, “Yes.”

Johnny moved toward her, but Nathan stepped between them.

“Not tonight.”

Johnny looked past him.

“My parents died because your family did not want to spend money.”

Margaret did not defend herself.

May you like

“Yes.”

The single word shattered the final illusion holding the Vale family together.
