Chapter 12 - The Brother in the Shadows

Lucian Whitmore descended the stairs slowly.
He wore a dark sweater and no coat, despite the winter cold. His hair was slightly longer than Julian’s, and a pale scar curved behind his right ear.
The resemblance was undeniable.
Julian stared at him as though he were looking into a mirror that had learned to hate him.
Marcus kept his weapon trained on Lucian.
“Hands visible.”
Lucian lifted them.
“I’m not armed.”
“The gun on the table?”
“Eleanor brought it.”
Eleanor turned toward him.
“You told me it was already here.”
Lucian smiled.
“Did I?”
August stepped forward.
Lucian’s expression changed.
For the first time, anger broke through his calm.
“Don’t come closer.”
August stopped.
“You are my son.”
“No. I am the son you allowed Adrian to erase.”
“I didn’t know you survived.”
“You signed the transfer.”
“I signed dozens of documents after the fire. I was told you died.”
Lucian removed a folded paper from his pocket and threw it onto the floor.
August picked it up.
It carried his signature.
TRANSFER TWIN B TO VOSS CUSTODY.
ALL RECORDS TO BE SEALED.
August read it twice.
“This signature could be forged.”
Lucian laughed.
“Everything can be forged now. Isn’t that convenient?”
Julian moved closer.
“What do you want?”
Lucian studied him.
“To see which of us he chooses.”
“I don’t care what he chooses.”
“You say that because he chose you before either of us could speak.”
Julian shook his head.
“I grew up in that house. Believe me, being chosen was not a gift.”
Lucian’s eyes narrowed.
“Then give me your life.”
No one spoke.
Lucian continued.
“Your name. Your board seat. Your inheritance. Your place in the family photographs.”
“You can have the board seat.”
“And the rest?”
“You cannot inherit memories you didn’t live.”
Lucian looked toward Marcus.
“Isn’t that exactly what they taught us to do?”
Marcus’s weapon remained steady.
“I was taught to become useful. You chose to become cruel.”
“You don’t know what I chose.”
“You lured Lena into the hotel.”
“Yes.”
“You killed Daniel.”
Lucian glanced toward Eleanor.
“No.”
“Who did?”
“The same person who poisoned the glass.”
Eleanor said, “Adrian.”
Lucian looked amused.
“You all keep using Adrian’s name as if it explains everything.”
“Is he alive?” Lena asked.
Lucian faced her.
“Yes.”
“Where is Owen?”
“Which one?”
“The real one.”
Lucian’s expression softened slightly.
“Owen was the only person who entered the Continuity Program voluntarily.”
Lena stared at him.
“That’s a lie.”
“He discovered the patients. He realized your family history made you vulnerable to financial pressure and medical coercion. He offered himself in exchange for your exclusion from the program.”
“My exclusion?”
“You were selected before he was.”
Lena remembered Patient 11.
The woman with her face.
“Then why create a copy of me?”
“Because Adrian never honors an agreement unless breaking it teaches someone a lesson.”
Lucian moved toward the window.
Outside, the frozen lake reflected pale moonlight.
“Your brother helped three patients escape. I helped him. That is why his car was staged.”
“Where did he go?”
“He tried to expose August.”
“And?”
“Someone betrayed him.”
“Who?”
Lucian turned toward Julian.
“He did.”
Julian shook his head.
“I never met Owen after the hotel.”
“You met him at the lake house.”
“No.”
Lucian took a phone from his pocket.
A video played.
Julian stood in the same sitting room.
Owen faced him.
The date showed eleven months earlier.
Owen said, “If August learns Lucian is alive, he’ll destroy every patient to hide the program.”
Julian replied, “Then my father can never know.”
Owen stepped backward.
“You promised to help me.”
“I promised to protect the family.”
The video ended.
Everyone looked at Julian.
He appeared genuinely horrified.
“I never said those words.”
Lucian approached him.
“Perhaps you don’t remember.”
Julian struck him.
Lucian fell against the table.
Marcus moved between them.
Lucian wiped blood from his lip and laughed.
“Excellent. Even you don’t know which life belongs to you.”
Detective Hale took the phone.
“We’ll authenticate the recording.”
“You should authenticate Julian,” Lucian said.
He reached behind his right ear and touched the scar.
“All Continuity subjects carry an implant near the temporal bone.”
Julian instinctively touched the same place on his own head.
His fingers stopped.
Beneath his hair was a scar.
He looked at August.
“What did you do to me?”
August stared at the scar.
“I don’t know.”
Julian backed away.
Marcus lowered his weapon slightly.
Lucian smiled.
“One of us was raised as Julian Whitmore.”
He pointed at himself.
“One of us was conditioned to believe he was.”
He pointed at Julian.
“And neither of us knows which is which.”
A gunshot shattered the window.
Lucian fell.
Blood spread across his chest.
Police officers rushed toward the broken glass.
Marcus pulled August to the floor.
Lena crawled toward Lucian.
His eyes fluttered.
He gripped her hand.

“The person who poisoned the toast,” he whispered, “was already inside your family before Julian was born.”
Then he lost consciousness.
