Chapter 11 - Someone Who Remembered Love

The man called himself Patient Twelve.

He had no memory of his birth name.

For four years, Adrian’s doctors had conditioned him using recordings, photographs, biometric data, and emotional simulations constructed from Owen’s life.

He remembered Lena’s childhood home.

He remembered Owen’s favorite song.

He remembered arguments, birthdays, failures, and promises.

But he knew those memories belonged to someone else.

Detective Hale transported him to a secure hospital under armed guard.

Before leaving Northstar, Lena searched the kitchen set.

Inside a drawer, she found a photograph of the three Owen copies.

Numbers were written beneath their faces.

12, 14, and 18.

Patient Twelve had been the man now in custody.

The second man had a thin scar under his chin.

The third had no visible marks.

On the back, Adrian had written:

ONE REMEMBERS.

ONE BELIEVES.

ONE IS REAL.

Lena showed the photograph to August.

“He’s telling me Owen may actually be alive.”

“Or making certain you keep searching.”

“Why create three?”

“To destroy certainty.”

Julian examined the image.

“Patient Twelve said he remembers loving Lena. If memory can create emotion, Adrian’s experiment worked.”

Marcus shook his head.

“Emotion is not obedience.”

Everyone looked at him.

He continued.

“I was conditioned to protect August. But I have disobeyed him many times.”

August said, “More than I know, apparently.”

Marcus ignored the remark.

“Voss does not want perfect copies. He wants people who can enter relationships and make independent decisions while believing they are someone else.”

Lena thought of the fake Julian on the wine room footage.

“That man may not have been wearing a disguise.”

“No,” Marcus said. “He may believe he is Julian.”

Back at the hotel, the situation had worsened.

Charles had disappeared from his guarded suite.

Two police officers assigned to his door claimed they watched him enter the bathroom and never come out. The bathroom window was sealed. No passage existed in the walls.

Security footage showed Charles leaving through the front lobby fifteen minutes before officers discovered the empty room.

He greeted three employees by name.

He entered a black car.

No one stopped him.

At the same time, another camera showed Charles still inside his suite.

Vivian stood before the screens.

“There are two of him.”

Celeste sat nearby, pale and shaking.

“Which one is my husband?”

No one answered.

Eleanor had also disappeared.

Unlike Charles, she had left a message.

It was addressed to August.

MEET ME WHERE MARGARET DIED.

COME ALONE IF YOU WANT THE TRUTH ABOUT YOUR SON.

August read it twice.

Julian asked, “Which son?”

“She only wrote your son.”

Charles was missing.

Julian was standing in the room.

But the phrasing made everyone uneasy.

Margaret Whitmore had died at the family’s lake house fourteen years earlier.

Officially, she suffered a heart attack while swimming alone.

Eleanor married August eighteen months later.

They traveled to the lake house with a police escort.

August refused to go alone.

The property stood dark beside the frozen water.

Inside, dust covered most of the furniture.

A fire burned in the sitting room.

Eleanor waited beside it.

She wore a simple black coat rather than the gold gown.

A gun rested on the table.

Marcus raised his weapon.

Eleanor lifted both hands.

“It isn’t mine.”

“Step away from it,” Detective Hale ordered.

Eleanor obeyed.

August entered last.

“What truth about my son?”

Eleanor looked at Julian.

“Not him.”

“Charles?”

“Not him either.”

August’s face tightened.

Eleanor turned toward a portrait above the fireplace.

It showed August, Margaret, Vivian, Charles, and Julian.

“There was another child,” she said.

Vivian stared at her.

“No.”

August said nothing.

Eleanor continued.

“Margaret gave birth to twin boys.”

Julian looked at his father.

“You told me I was born alone.”

“One infant died,” August said.

“That is what Margaret believed,” Eleanor replied.

August moved toward her.

“What are you saying?”

“Adrian took the second child.”

The room became silent except for the fire.

Eleanor opened a folder on the table.

Inside were medical records from the old Meridian clinic.

TWIN A: JULIAN WHITMORE

TWIN B: SUBJECT TRANSFERRED

Julian read the page.

His hands began to shake.

“Transferred where?”

Eleanor’s eyes moved toward Marcus.

“Into the Continuity Program.”

Marcus looked at August.

“Did you know?”

August said nothing.

Julian grabbed his father by the collar.

“Did you know?”

“No.”

The answer came too quickly.

Julian shoved him backward.

Detective Hale stepped between them.

Eleanor pointed toward a photograph beneath the medical record.

It showed two newborn boys.

One wore a white identification band.

The other wore black.

On the back was a handwritten note.

JULIAN SURVIVED.

LUCIAN CONTINUED.

A floorboard creaked above them.

Everyone looked toward the staircase.

A man stood in the shadows.

He had Julian’s face.

“Hello, brother,” he said.
