Chapter 6 - Room 214

Room 214 did not appear on any current map of Westbridge Academy.
According to old construction plans Noah found in the library archive, it had once been a records office beside the original gymnasium.
Renovations sealed the hallway leading to it twelve years earlier.
But the room itself had never been demolished.
Willa, Noah, and Lena entered the old wing through a maintenance stairwell.
Dust covered the windows. Plastic sheets hung over broken furniture. The air smelled of old wood and damp plaster.
At the end of the corridor, they found a wall of painted panels.
Lena knocked against each one.
The fourth panel sounded hollow.
Behind it was a narrow door.
The lock required four digits.
Willa entered the number written on the check.
The door opened.
Room 214 contained filing cabinets, shelves of videotapes, outdated computers, and boxes marked with years.
Noah stared in disbelief.
“This is not abandoned.”
A modern router blinked beneath the desk.
Someone was still using the room.
They searched quickly.
Many files contained training records from previous years. Some were marked confidential. Others listed medical conditions, scholarship evaluations, family incomes, and disciplinary histories.
“They collected everything,” Lena whispered.
Noah opened a folder labeled STONE, CALEB.
It was empty.
Willa found another folder containing her own name.
Inside were copies of her scholarship application, her mother’s employment records, medical reports, attendance history, and private emails.
There was also a page titled PRESSURE POINTS.
Under it were three entries.
Mother’s employment.
Scholarship renewal.
Housing instability.
Willa felt sick.
“They planned how to control me.”
Noah photographed every page.
Lena opened a drawer built into the desk.
Inside was a second black championship ring.
Caleb’s initials were engraved beneath it.
If his ring was in Room 214, then the person who took the timing chip had been wearing another one.
A computer monitor suddenly turned on.
The screen displayed a security-camera image.
It showed the three students standing inside the room.
“They know we’re here,” Noah said.
The door slammed shut.
Lena ran to it.
Locked.
A speaker crackled above them.
Coach Mercer’s voice filled the room.
“You were warned.”
Willa looked at the ceiling camera.
“Where is Caleb?”
Silence.
Then a second voice answered.
Female.
Calm.
Controlled.
“You should be more concerned about where you will be tomorrow.”
Eleanor Vale.
Willa moved beneath the speaker.
“You changed the race result.”
“I protect this academy from instability.”
“You mean from the truth.”
“The truth is rarely as valuable as people imagine.”
Noah searched the desk for another exit.
Eleanor continued speaking.
“You entered a restricted area, stole confidential records, and damaged school property. By morning, your scholarships will be terminated. Your families will face legal action.”
“You cannot erase the videos we already sent,” Noah lied.
The speaker went silent.
Willa looked at him.
He quietly shook his head.
They had not sent anything.
The router lights switched off.
The room went dark.
A grinding sound came from behind the filing cabinets.
Lena switched on her phone flashlight.
One cabinet was moving.
Behind it stood a pale young man with an injured leg.

Caleb Stone pressed a finger to his lips.
“Stay quiet,” he whispered. “There is another way out.”
