Chapter 15 - The Door Behind the Results

Vice Principal Sloan was waiting beneath the original administration hall.
Willa entered the underground chamber with Noah, Lena, Caleb, Julian, and Samuel behind her.
Coach Mercer remained unconscious at the clinic.
Claire’s location was unknown.
The chamber door was circular and made of steel. At its center was a scanner surrounded by three narrow slots.
Sloan stood beside it holding a silver data card.
“You came faster than I expected,” she said.
Willa faced her.
“You have my mother’s sequence.”
“Yes.”
“You gave the order to kidnap her.”
“No.”
“You started the fire.”
“I disabled the alarms. Someone else started the fire.”
“You unlocked the race file.”
“To trace the person altering it.”
“Every answer makes you innocent.”
Sloan looked tired.
“I am not innocent.”
She inserted the silver card into the first slot.
“I helped build the system. I changed records. I protected donors. I convinced myself that keeping the academy stable justified what we did.”
“Why help us now?”
“Because the system stopped serving the people who created it.”
Julian laughed.
“You mean you lost control.”
Sloan did not deny it.
Samuel approached the second slot and entered a numeric code.
The steel door hummed.
Only the biometric scanner remained.
Willa looked at it.
“What happens after I open this?”
“The archive becomes accessible,” Samuel said.
“To whom?”
“To us.”
Sloan’s eyes shifted.
Willa caught the movement.
“No.”
She stepped away from the scanner.
“You are still lying.”
Sloan lowered her voice.
“If we do not open the archive tonight, it will erase itself at midnight.”
“Who activated the erasure?”
“I do not know.”
“You always know more than you admit.”
A clock above the door showed eleven fifty-three.
Seven minutes remained.
Noah checked his tablet.
“There is an external connection attempting to access the chamber.”
“From where?” Lena asked.
“The Vale research center.”
Willa thought of Claire.
Someone at the building was already trying to enter the archive remotely.
“Can you block them?”
“Not without opening the local system.”
Willa placed her palm against the scanner.
A needle pressed into her finger.
The machine collected a drop of blood.
Green light spread around the circular door.
The locks released one by one.
The steel door opened.
Beyond it stood rows of dark servers, filing cabinets, and shelves filled with physical records.
A central monitor turned on.
Text appeared.
IDENTITY CONFIRMED.
PROJECT WILLA ACTIVE.
Noah approached the screen.
“There are thousands of files.”
Caleb searched for his name.
Lena searched for the altered championship result.
Julian connected a portable drive.
Sloan moved toward the main console.
Then the chamber door slammed shut behind them.
The clock reached eleven fifty-six.
A new message appeared.
ARCHIVE TRANSFER IN PROGRESS.
RECIPIENT: UNKNOWN.
“Someone is copying everything,” Noah said.
“Stop it,” Willa ordered.
“I cannot. The transfer has administrator authority.”
Samuel searched the access log.
“There is only one account above the founders.”
Sloan stared at him.
“That is impossible.”
“What account?” Willa asked.
Samuel turned the screen toward her.
The username was not Richard Vale.
It was not Eleanor Vale.
It was not Sloan, Mercer, Claire, or Samuel.
The account had been active for sixteen years.
Its last login had occurred less than one minute earlier.
Beside the username was a live security image from the Vale research center.
Claire stood inside a laboratory.
She was no longer tied to a chair.
She was speaking calmly to someone outside the camera frame.
Willa moved closer to the screen.
“Mom?”
Claire looked directly toward the camera, as though she could see her daughter through it.
Then a man stepped into view.
Coach Mercer.
He was no longer unconscious.
He was standing without assistance.
Willa stared at the impossible image.
Noah checked the clinic report on his tablet.
“The man in the hospital is still there.”
“Then who is that?” Lena whispered.
The man beside Claire removed a small device from behind his ear.
A thin artificial layer loosened across his face.
He began pulling away the disguise.
Before his real features were revealed, the video froze.
A voice filled the chamber.
It came through every speaker at once.
“You have spent weeks fighting over a race result.”
Willa recognized the voice.
She had heard it before, though she could not remember where.
“But the championship was never the objective.”
The archive lights changed from green to red.
All the screens displayed the same sentence.
WILLA HART HAS OPENED THE FINAL PHASE.
A metal section of the floor began sliding apart.
Cold air rose from a chamber beneath them.
Inside were dozens of sealed containers marked with student names.
One carried Caleb Stone’s name.
Another carried Victoria Vale’s.
The final container was larger than the others.
Its label read:
WILLA HART
ORIGINAL IDENTITY RECORD
Willa looked at Samuel.
“What does original identity mean?”
Samuel’s face had become white.
“I don’t know.”
Sloan stepped backward.
For the first time, she appeared genuinely terrified.
“Yes, you do,” Julian said.
A sound came from inside Willa’s container.
A slow mechanical click.
Then another.
The lid began to open.
At that exact moment, Willa’s phone received a message from Claire.
DO NOT BELIEVE THE MAN WHO CALLS HIMSELF YOUR FATHER.
Willa looked up.
Samuel was holding a gun.
He pointed it directly at the opening container.
“What is inside there?” Willa demanded.
Samuel’s hand trembled.
“Something that should have died sixteen years ago.”
The lid rose another inch.
A human hand appeared through the darkness.
May you like
Around its wrist was an orange thread bracelet identical to the one Willa had worn since birth.
Then the person inside whispered Willa’s name.
