Chapter 14 - What Grandma Never Told Brooke)

The envelope contained no letter.

Only a key.

A small brass key taped to a card.

On the card were handwritten coordinates.

Parker refused to let Brooke follow them alone.

By afternoon, investigators identified the location.

A safety-deposit facility in downtown Columbus.

Private.

Old.

The account had been opened eighteen years earlier.

Beneficiary name:

Brooke Hale.

Brooke stared at the paperwork.

“I wasn’t alive.”

Laura looked equally confused.

Adam’s expression was worse.

“Evelyn planned this.”

“Planned what?” Brooke demanded.

No one answered.

A court order allowed the box to be opened.

Brooke was present.

So were Laura, Adam, Parker and an attorney.

Inside were three things.

A birth certificate.

A stack of bonds.

And a sealed videotape labeled:

FOR BROOKE AFTER ADAM RETURNS.

Brooke looked toward her father.

“You knew?”

“No.”

The birth certificate was hers.

Original.

Brooke Elaine Hale.

Father: Adam Michael Hale.

Mother: Laura Evelyn Mercer.

Brooke frowned.

“Mercer?”

Laura closed her eyes.

“My maiden name.”

“Grandma’s first husband was Mercer.”

“Yes.”

“Are you related to him?”

“No.”

“Then why same name?”

Laura looked toward the attorney.

Brooke felt dread.

“Mom.”

Laura finally said, “Evelyn wasn’t Adam’s biological mother.”

Adam stared at her.

“What?”

Laura covered her mouth.

“I thought you knew.”

Adam stood.

“Knew what?”

“Evelyn adopted you.”

The room went silent.

Adam’s face emptied.

“No.”

Laura whispered, “She told me years ago.”

“No.”

“She made me promise.”

“Why would she tell you?”

“Because Brooke was born.”

Adam stepped backward.

“So Thomas?”

“Biological.”

“Michael?”

“Adopted too.”

Adam stared at the wall.

Brooke felt almost dizzy.

Nothing in this family tree meant what it seemed.

They played the videotape.

Evelyn appeared on screen.

Thinner.

A scarf around her head.

Recorded during cancer treatment.

“If Brooke is watching this, then Adam came home.”

Brooke swallowed.

Evelyn smiled sadly.

“I hope you made him earn your trust.”

Adam laughed once through tears.

“That sounds like her.”

Evelyn continued.

“There are truths parents hide because they are ashamed. Others because they believe silence will protect children.”

She paused.

“I made both mistakes.”

Brooke leaned closer.

“Adam, you were adopted when you were six months old. Michael was adopted two years later. Thomas was my biological son.”

Adam covered his mouth.

“I loved all three of you equally.”

Evelyn’s voice shook.

“Thomas never believed that.”

Brooke understood.

The first son always gets everything.

“After my husband died, Thomas believed the family estate belonged to him. When I created educational trusts for my grandchildren, he challenged them.”

Evelyn looked directly at the camera.

“He especially challenged Brooke’s.”

Brooke frowned.

“Why me?”

The recording answered.

“Because Brooke was the first grandchild named as direct beneficiary.”

Brooke stared.

So that was the trust.

Created before her birth because Evelyn had planned it when Laura became pregnant.

Evelyn continued.

“Thomas began moving money without authorization. Michael discovered it. Gary helped Thomas hide it.”

Adam whispered, “Michael was trying to expose them.”

Evelyn nodded on screen almost as if answering him.

“Michael was not stealing from you, Adam.”

Adam closed his eyes.

“He was trying to stop Thomas.”

The truth of the river night rearranged itself.

Michael’s warning.

The unknown man in the road.

The crash.

The disappearance.

Evelyn continued.

“Rachel Mercer was Gary’s wife. She learned what he was doing. Michael helped her disappear after Gary threatened her.”

Laura whispered, “They were protecting each other.”

“Three years later, Rachel helped Michael disappear.”

Brooke finally understood both false death certificates.

Gary thought they were dead.

Or pretended to.

Evelyn continued.

“Gary eventually discovered Michael survived. That was when Adam became useful.”

Adam looked sick.

“He framed me because he needed control of the business.”

“Yes,” Parker whispered.

“And access to Laura.”

Evelyn’s final words came slowly.

“Thomas built the scheme. Gary maintained it. Michael and Rachel tried to expose it. Robert continued their work.”

Brooke looked toward Parker.

“Robert is on our side.”

“If the video is accurate.”

The tape continued.

“But I made one terrible mistake.”

Everyone leaned closer.

“I trusted Thomas one last time.”

Evelyn began crying.

“Two years ago, he came to me and said he wanted to make things right.”

Brooke’s heartbeat accelerated.

“He asked where I had hidden the original trust records.”

Evelyn looked directly at the camera.

“I told him.”

The recording flickered.

“If Thomas is still alive when you see this, do not underestimate him.”

Static crossed the screen.

Then Evelyn added something unexpected.

“And Brooke, do not assume Gary was the person watching your house.”

The video ended.

Nobody spoke for several seconds.

Brooke finally said, “Thomas.”

Parker nodded.

“Possibly.”

Adam stared at the blank screen.

“He’s my brother.”

“Biologically no,” Brooke said softly.

Adam looked at her.

She continued.

“But if Grandma raised you together, I guess that doesn’t matter.”

Adam gave a sad smile.

“No.”

The bonds inside the deposit box were legally Brooke’s.

Their value shocked everyone.

Almost three million dollars.

Brooke barely cared.

Money had destroyed enough things.

She asked the attorney to place everything under independent supervision until she turned eighteen.

No Gary.

No Laura.

No Adam.

Her decision.

Laura looked proud.

Adam did too.

That evening, Gary accepted an interview with prosecutors.

He wanted a deal.

In exchange, he offered information about Thomas.

Parker played part of the interview for the family.

Gary looked smaller without his house.

Without his rules.

Without people to intimidate.

“Thomas is alive,” he said.

“Where?” the prosecutor asked.

“I don’t know.”

“When did you last see him?”

“Six months ago.”

“Did he kill Evelyn Hale?”

Gary looked toward the camera.

“No.”

Brooke exhaled.

Then Gary continued.

“But he tried.”

Laura covered her mouth.

“What happened?”

“She found out.”

“About what?”

Gary leaned back.

“Robert.”

“What about Robert?”

“Robert wasn’t investigating me.”

Brooke leaned closer.

Gary smiled bitterly.

“He was investigating Thomas.”

The prosecutor asked, “Where is Thomas now?”

Gary looked directly into the camera.

“If Robert is still alive, Thomas will find Brooke.”

Adam whispered, “Why?”

Gary answered the recorded question before anyone asked it.

“Because Brooke has something Thomas has spent seventeen years trying to recover.”

The prosecutor frowned.

“What?”

Gary smiled.

May you like

“He doesn’t know.”

Neither did Brooke.
