Chapter 9 - Taking Back the Company
The board asked Claire to attend an emergency meeting.
Several members avoided her eyes as she entered. They had believed Victor when he described her as incapable and uninterested.
The chairman cleared his throat.
“We owe you an apology.”
“An apology will not protect the employees.”
Claire placed a recovery plan on the table.
It detailed unpaid contracts, vulnerable projects, available assets and a strategy for restoring investor confidence.
One board member flipped through the pages.
“You prepared this?”
“I prepared the original financial structure of the company.”
Within a week, Claire was appointed interim chief executive.
Her first decision was to protect employee salaries and retirement accounts. Her second was to cancel the contracts Victor had awarded to friends. Her third was to establish independent oversight so that no executive could ever control company finances alone.
Some investors expected the company to collapse.
Instead, Hale Development stabilized within six months.
Claire renamed it Bennett Construction, restoring her father’s family name to the business he had helped create.
Victor eventually pleaded guilty after the recovered messages, forged documents and recorded voicemail made a successful defense impossible.
The court ordered restitution and permanently barred him from serving as a corporate director.
During sentencing, Victor looked across the courtroom at Claire.
He seemed older.
“I made mistakes,” he told the judge. “But my wife set a trap for me.”
Claire did not react.
The judge studied him.
“Your wife preserved evidence. You created the trap yourself.”
For Claire, those words were more satisfying than any revenge she could have planned.
