Chapter 1 - The Wife He Underestimated

Six months earlier, Victor Hale had entered the bedroom carrying two glasses of champagne.
“To us,” he said.
Claire accepted the glass but did not drink.
“To what exactly?”
“To twelve years of marriage. To the company. To finally living the life we deserve.”
Victor lifted his glass, but his smile never reached his eyes.
Hale Development had begun as a small construction company operating from Claire’s father’s garage. Victor had charisma, confidence and an instinct for attracting wealthy investors. Claire had patience, discipline and a talent for numbers.
In the early years, they had worked together.
Claire created budgets, negotiated supplier contracts and managed payroll while Victor attended meetings and charmed clients. When the company became successful, Victor began introducing Claire as his wife rather than his business partner.
Soon, her office disappeared.
Her name vanished from presentations.
Victor convinced the board that Claire wanted to focus on their home. Then he began joking that she could barely understand a bank statement.
At dinner parties, he called her his “beautiful little dependent.”
Claire had smiled through every insult.
She understood that powerful men often revealed their worst decisions when they believed no one intelligent was watching.
That evening, Victor placed a folder on the bed.
“Just routine documents,” he said. “I need your signature.”
Claire opened the folder.
The first page was an authorization granting Victor control over several properties inherited from her father. The second allowed him to secure loans using those properties as collateral.
“Why would the company need this?”
Victor’s expression hardened for half a second.
Then the smile returned.
“It’s temporary. We’re expanding.”
Claire closed the folder.
“I’ll read it tomorrow.”
Victor took it from her hands.
“There’s nothing to read.”
The next morning, the folder was gone.
Three days later, Claire received an automated email thanking her for approving a loan she had never signed.
She stared at the message for a long time.

Then she created a new folder on her private computer.
She named it DAWN.
