Chapter 9 - The Last Road Along the River

The sedan followed Isabel’s SUV along the flooded river road.
Rain reduced the city to streaks of white and red.
Marcus drove while speaking to the agents over the radio.
Isabel’s vehicle turned toward the old ferry terminal.
“She is trapped,” Elena said.
“No,” Matthew replied. “There is a private access road behind the terminal.”
“How do you know?”
“My company installed security there six years ago.”
Marcus turned sharply.
The sedan entered a narrow lane between warehouses.
Ahead, Isabel’s SUV stopped beside the river.
She stepped out carrying the portable drive.
A small motorboat waited at the dock.
Daniel’s files contained enough evidence to convict her, but the drive could identify every person she had paid. Losing it would leave half the network untouched.
Elena opened the car door.
Matthew caught her arm.
“Wait for the agents.”
“She will reach the boat.”
“You are not chasing her onto a flooded dock.”
Elena looked at his hand.
He released her.
“Sorry.”
She stepped into the rain.
“Elena!” Isabel shouted from the dock. “Come closer.”
Matthew followed several feet behind her.
Isabel held the drive above the river.
“This contains your father’s final financial records.”
“It contains yours.”
“It contains names you have not seen. Judges. Doctors. Trustees. People who will deny everything once this disappears.”
“Then why destroy it?”
“Because control is more valuable than money.”
Elena continued toward her.
Isabel’s confidence returned.
“You want the truth about your father?”
“I already have it.”
“No. You have his guilt. You do not have his final decision.”
Elena stopped.
Isabel removed a folded document from her coat.
“Three days before he died, Alejandro prepared a new will.”
Matthew came closer.
“Do not listen to her.”
“He removed Elena from the company entirely,” Isabel said. “He left his shares to the foundation.”
Elena looked at the paper.
“That is not possible.”
“He believed you would never survive this world.”
The old doubt returned.
Perhaps her father had seen her grief and agreed with Isabel.
Perhaps the trust had not been stolen.
Perhaps she had been protected because she truly was incapable.
Matthew stepped beside her.
“Alejandro’s letter said Isabel used fear to control both of you.”
Isabel smiled.
“And Matthew hid that letter from you. Everyone protects you with lies.”
Elena looked at the document again.
Then she noticed the signature.
Her father always signed the name Vargas with a long upward stroke beneath the final letters.
This signature ended downward.
The same way Isabel signed her own name.
“It is forged,” Elena said.
Isabel’s smile disappeared.
“You never understood him,” Elena continued. “You copied his handwriting, his office, his charities, and his public speeches. But you never noticed the small things.”
Sirens approached.
Isabel threw the portable drive toward the river.
Elena moved instinctively, but Matthew reached it first.
He caught the drive against his chest and fell onto the wet dock.
The motorboat driver accelerated away without Isabel.
She turned toward the road.
Federal vehicles blocked the exit.
For the first time, Isabel Vargas had nowhere to go.
Sofia approached with two agents.
“Isabel Vargas, you are under arrest for financial fraud, witness intimidation, conspiracy, unlawful surveillance, and obstruction of justice.”
Isabel looked at Elena.
“I raised you.”
“You managed me,” Elena replied. “My father raised me.”
“You will lose everything.”
Elena glanced toward Matthew, who stood holding the recovered drive.
“No,” she said. “I already lost everything. That is why you cannot frighten me anymore.”
The agents took Isabel away.
Daniel Cross entered protective custody and agreed to testify.
The portable drive identified fourteen shell companies, six compromised physicians, two attorneys, three board members, and the private firm that had helped create false reports about Elena.
It also contained the original trust documents.
Alejandro Vargas had never removed Elena from the company.
He had given her controlling authority on her twenty-fifth birthday.
That birthday was eight months away.
Until then, Isabel had been required to preserve the shares.

Instead, she had spent three years trying to make Elena surrender them voluntarily.
The empire Isabel believed she owned had never legally belonged to her.
