Chapter 8 - The Trap Inside the Ledger
Sofia Lane had not betrayed Elena.
The warning sent to her office had delayed her, but Marcus reached her before Isabel’s men did.
By midnight, Sofia had assembled a small federal task force outside normal local channels.
They could not arrest Isabel based only on Elena’s accusations, but they could monitor the exchange.
Elena insisted on wearing the transmitter.
Matthew objected until Sofia interrupted him.
“She is the victim, the primary witness, and the legal owner of the records,” Sofia said. “You do not get to replace Isabel’s control with your own.”
Matthew said nothing after that.
They returned to the abandoned hotel the following evening.
The plan required Elena to enter first.
Matthew would arrive with the false ledger.
Marcus and the agents would remain outside the property’s security radius.
Elena stood in the ballroom beneath the ruined chandelier.
Rain struck the windows.
Five minutes passed.
Then ten.
The transmitter light went dark.
“Elena?” Sofia’s voice disappeared from the hidden earpiece.
The hotel had become a dead zone.
Elena forced herself to remain still.
Headlights crossed the windows.
Matthew entered with Isabel and her two guards.
The scene unfolded exactly as planned until Isabel mentioned the letter.
Then the lights went out.
In the darkness, Elena heard movement.
A hand caught her arm.
She twisted away.
“It is me,” Matthew whispered.
“Where is Isabel?”
A side door slammed.
Emergency lights flickered red along the corridor.
Sofia’s voice returned through the earpiece.
“Signal restored. Isabel is moving toward the lower level.”
“She knows the tunnels,” Elena said.
Matthew picked up the false ledger.
“She also has the tracker.”
They followed the signal toward the hidden records room.
The security shutter stood open.
Daniel Cross was inside.
This time, he was not alone.
Isabel stood behind him with a stack of papers and a portable drive.
“You wanted your witness,” she said. “Here he is.”
Daniel looked at Elena.
“I am sorry.”
Isabel placed the drive beside the ledger.
“Daniel copied every account. He also created the reports declaring Elena incompetent.”
Daniel lowered his head.
“I signed what she gave me.”
“Why?” Elena asked.
“Because she threatened my family.”
Isabel smiled.
“Everyone has a price.”
“No,” Elena said. “Everyone has something they are afraid to lose. You simply mistake fear for loyalty.”
Isabel’s expression hardened.
“You sound like your father.”
“You made him afraid too.”
“He was weak.”
“You altered his medication.”
Matthew stepped closer.
Isabel turned toward him.
“You have no proof.”
The transmitter light glowed beneath Elena’s coat.
“You just confirmed it,” she said.
Isabel looked at the red light.
Her face changed.
She reached for the portable drive, but Daniel moved first.
He knocked it from the desk.
It slid across the floor toward Matthew.
One of Isabel’s guards lunged for it.
Marcus entered through the side door with federal agents behind him.
“Do not move.”
The room filled with commands, footsteps, and flashing lights.
Isabel backed toward the hidden mirror.
Elena followed.
“It is over.”
“You still do not understand what your father built,” Isabel said. “Do you think the board will welcome you? Do you think investors will trust a frightened girl who ran barefoot from her own home?”
Elena stepped closer.
“No. I think they will trust the woman who returned with evidence.”
Isabel pressed a concealed button.
The security shutter began dropping between them.
Elena caught her coat on the edge and fell backward.
Matthew pulled her clear before the metal struck the floor.
Isabel disappeared behind the barrier.
An engine started outside.
“She has another exit,” Elena said.
They raced through the ballroom.
A black SUV sped from the loading dock toward the river road.
Marcus and the agents followed.
Matthew reached the sedan.
Elena opened the rear door.
He looked at her.

They climbed inside.
