Chapter 13 - the name on the certificate

Ryan called back twenty three times.
No answer.
Maine State Police reached the motel forty minutes later.
Claire was gone.
No signs of forced entry.
No blood.
No struggle.
Her rental car remained in the parking lot.
Her suitcase remained inside.
The documents from Edward were missing.
Ryan felt twelve years old again.
Standing in a hallway.
Listening to Diane say:
Claire doesn't want to be part of this family anymore.
Only now he knew better.
Emily sat beside him.
"Police are looking."
He nodded.
"She's gone again."
"Not the same way."
"How do you know?"
"Because this time you know she wants to come back."
He looked at her.
Emily squeezed his hand.
"You heard her."
That mattered.
By morning, Daniel was already driving toward Maine.
Margaret went with him.
Robert stayed.
For once, he said he was tired of running after consequences instead of facing the damage directly.
He sat with Noah at Lauren's kitchen table.
Noah drew a dinosaur.
Robert watched.
"That's a good one."
"It's a T rex."
"I figured."
"It has tiny arms."
"So do I."
Noah giggled.
Robert smiled.
Then Noah asked:
"Grandpa?"
"Yes?"
"Why does Grandma hate me?"
The smile disappeared.
Robert looked across the room at Ryan.
Ryan couldn't breathe.
Robert answered carefully.
"She doesn't know how to love people without trying to control them."
Noah frowned.
"That's not love."
Robert's eyes filled with tears.
"No."
He looked toward Ryan.
"No, it isn't."
Noah returned to his drawing.
Ryan stepped onto the balcony.
Robert followed.
"You handled that well."
"Thirty years too late."
"Maybe."
Robert leaned on the railing.
"Your mother didn't always seem like this."
Ryan looked at him.
"You don't have to defend her."
"I'm not."
"Then what?"
"I'm trying to understand how I became someone who watched things happen."
Ryan said nothing.
Robert continued.
"At first it was little things. She chose where we went. Who we saw. What we bought. Then she started deciding which people were bad for us."
"Margaret."
"Yes."
"Claire."
"Yes."
"Emily."
Robert looked at him.
"She tried."
Ryan knew.
Diane never succeeded in removing Emily because Emily refused to disappear quietly.
Maybe that was why Diane hated her.
Emily represented something Claire hadn't had at twenty one.
A voice that kept saying no.
Robert took out his wallet.
He removed an old folded photograph.
Ryan as an infant.
Diane held him.
Beside her stood Robert.
Except another man appeared at the edge.
Only half his face visible.
"Who is that?"
Robert stared at the picture.
"Thomas Vale."
The name meant nothing.
"Friend?"
"Business partner."
Ryan's heartbeat changed.
"My father?"
Robert looked at him.
"I don't know."
Ryan wanted anger.
Instead he felt numb.
"You never questioned it?"
"I did."
"And?"
"Diane swore you were mine."
"Did you believe her?"
"I wanted to."
Ryan looked at him.
"Did it matter?"
Robert's answer came immediately.
"No."
For the first time since Thanksgiving, Ryan believed him without reservation.
"You raised me."
"You're my son."
"Even if the certificate says otherwise?"
"Especially then."
Ryan swallowed.
"Who was Thomas Vale?"
"Architect. Brilliant. Arrogant. Charming."
"Mom had an affair with him?"
Robert looked toward the apartment.
"I think so."
"Where is he?"
"Dead."
Ryan stiffened.
"When?"
"1998."
"How?"
"Car accident."
Ryan laughed bitterly.
"Please tell me Mom wasn't involved."
"I have no reason to think she was."
"That's not the same as no."
"No."
Robert looked ashamed.
"I don't know."
Ryan's phone rang.
Daniel.
He answered.
"We found Claire."
Ryan stood.
"Is she okay?"
"Yes."
Air returned to his lungs.
"Where?"
"At Edward's house."
"What?"
"She went voluntarily."
"Why?"
"Edward was the person at the motel."
Ryan closed his eyes.
"What did he want?"
"To negotiate."
"For money?"
"Partly."
"What else?"
Daniel went quiet.
"Ryan, Edward has the original birth certificate."
"Mine?"
"Yes."
"And?"
"He says the father's name matters because Thomas Vale wasn't just Robert's business partner."
"Who was he?"
Daniel hesitated.
"Grace Holloway's attorney."
Ryan frowned.
His grandmother's attorney.
The woman whose will determined ownership of the house.
Suddenly every part of the story began moving toward the same point.
"What does that have to do with Sophie?"
"Thomas drafted an earlier version of Grace's estate plan."
"And?"
"Edward has a copy."
Ryan gripped the railing.
"What's in it?"
Daniel exhaled.
"Grace created a separate family trust."
"For who?"
"Her grandchildren."
Ryan's mind raced.
"Claire and me?"
"And any direct descendants of Claire."
Sophie.
"What happened to the trust?"
"That's what we're trying to establish."
"How much?"
Daniel was quiet.
"At the time Grace died, approximately three million dollars."
Ryan said nothing.
Today, after twenty five years of investment, it could be far more.
"Does Diane control it?"
"Not legally."
"But?"
"Someone has been withdrawing money."
Ryan closed his eyes.
"For how long?"
"Twenty two years."
"How much is left?"
"Edward doesn't know."
Ryan looked through the balcony door at Noah.
His son drew happily beside Robert.
A stain.
A shove.
A hospital.
A hidden letter.
All of it had started with Diane's obsession with control.
But perhaps control had always followed the money.
"Daniel."
"Yes?"
"Who is the trustee?"
There was a pause.
Then Daniel said the name.
May you like
Ryan turned slowly toward Robert.
"You're not going to believe this."
