Chapter 5 - twenty-eight minutes before the oath

By the time Charlotte arrived at the commissioning site, Gregory was standing in the lobby beneath a row of American flags.

He looked perfectly calm.

Harold stood beside him holding a leather portfolio.

Cynthia was there too.

Charlotte stopped twenty feet away.

Major Ross stepped closer to her.

"Do you want them removed?"

Charlotte considered it.

Then Gregory smiled.

"Charlotte."

She hated how normal he sounded.

Like a father greeting his daughter before an important ceremony.

"Congratulations."

Charlotte walked toward him but stopped outside arm's reach.

"What are you doing here?"

"I came to support you."

"No, you didn't."

Cynthia looked around nervously.

"Must we do this here?"

Charlotte stared at Harold's portfolio.

"Are those the papers?"

Harold cleared his throat.

"There are some time-sensitive documents."

Rebecca appeared behind Charlotte.

Harold recognized her.

His face hardened.

"Who is this?"

"My lawyer."

Gregory's smile vanished.

Cynthia whispered, "Charlotte, that's unnecessary."

Rebecca stepped forward.

"Ms. Palmer has instructed me that she will not execute any document presented by Mr. Bennett."

Harold's eyes narrowed.

"On what basis?"

"On the basis that your proposed transfer would benefit entities controlled by her parents while divesting her of hundreds of millions in trust interests."

Two cadets nearby turned.

Gregory noticed.

His face changed instantly.

"We are not discussing private family matters here."

Charlotte said, "Then leave."

Gregory looked at her.

There was something new in his eyes.

Not anger.

Calculation.

"Did you open the box?"

Charlotte did not answer.

That was enough.

Gregory's jaw tightened.

Harold quietly said, "Gregory."

Charlotte saw the fear pass between them.

She stepped closer.

"I know about the forty-six million."

Cynthia looked away.

"I know about the unauthorized collateral."

Harold's face went pale.

"I know Grandpa anticipated this."

Gregory spoke through his teeth.

"Lower your voice."

"No."

"Charlotte."

"No."

She had spent her childhood responding to that tone.

One word from Gregory had always meant obedience.

Not today.

"You forged my signature."

Gregory looked around.

Rebecca placed a hand lightly on Charlotte's arm.

"Do not engage further."

But Charlotte needed one answer.

"Why didn't you ask me?"

Gregory stared at her.

"For what?"

"For help."

He almost laughed.

"You think this is about help?"

"You used my trust."

"I preserved what belongs to this family."

"It belonged to me."

"You are twenty-four years old."

"I'm old enough to serve."

"That uniform does not make you competent to control a company."

Charlotte felt the words land.

For the first time, Gregory was saying what he truly believed.

Not that she was unprepared.

Not that the company needed him.

That anything belonging to Charlotte still belonged, in his mind, to him.

Major Ross approached.

"Ms. Palmer, we need to begin staging."

Charlotte nodded.

Gregory stepped forward.

Rebecca moved between them.

"Do not touch my client."

People were watching now.

Gregory stopped.

Then something remarkable happened.

He smiled again.

"Of course."

He straightened his shirt.

"Charlotte can make her own choices."

Harold stared at him.

Gregory turned away.

Charlotte watched him leave with Cynthia.

Harold followed.

She should have felt relieved.

Instead, a cold sensation settled in her stomach.

Rebecca felt it too.

"That was too easy."

Charlotte nodded.

"What can he do after I commission?"

"Less than he can do before."

"And before?"

Rebecca looked at the clock.

"Twenty-eight minutes."

Charlotte changed into her uniform.

At eight eighteen, she entered the auditorium.

Her classmates stood in rows.

Families filled the seats.

Major Ross approached her near the side of the stage.

"Your parents left."

Charlotte exhaled.

"Good."

Ross hesitated.

"There is a problem."

Charlotte's heart sank.

"What?"

"Administrative hold."

"On me?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"A medical concern was submitted."

Charlotte stared.

"What medical concern?"

Ross held up a printed email.

Anonymous documentation had been sent to the program director claiming Charlotte had a history of panic episodes, blackouts, and prescription medication abuse.

Charlotte laughed once in disbelief.

"None of that is true."

"I know."

"Who sent it?"

"We don't know."

"Can they stop my commission?"

"Temporarily, yes, if they believe there is an unresolved medical qualification issue."

Charlotte looked toward the stage.

The ceremony was beginning.

Her classmates would receive their commissions.

Her name might not be called.

She understood immediately.

Gregory did not need her to sign before eight thirty if he could prevent eight thirty from becoming the vesting event.

"How long can the hold last?"

"Could be hours. Could be days."

Days.

Enough time.

Rebecca arrived moments later.

Charlotte showed her the notice.

Rebecca read it.

"This is strategic."

"Can we fight it?"

"Yes. Not instantly."

Charlotte watched the first cadet walk onto the stage.

Applause filled the room.

Something inside her broke quietly.

Not because of money.

Because her father had reached into the one part of her life she had built without him.

He had contaminated it.

Major Ross lowered her voice.

"Palmer, look at me."

Charlotte did.

"This is a delay."

Charlotte said nothing.

"It is not a verdict."

Another name was called.

Charlotte swallowed.

Ross continued.

"We document. We verify. We correct the record."

Rebecca's phone rang.

She stepped away.

Charlotte remained near the curtains and watched every classmate take the oath she had prepared to take beside them.

At nine twelve, the final applause ended.

Charlotte was still a cadet.

Gregory had won the morning.

But only temporarily.

Rebecca returned.

Her expression was grim.

"What happened?"

"I just spoke with First Franklin."

Charlotte waited.

"Someone attempted to access Box 417 thirty minutes after we left."

"Who?"

"Harold."

Charlotte looked toward the emptying auditorium.

"He knows we have the evidence."

Rebecca nodded.

"And now he knows the box is empty."

Charlotte removed her white gloves.

"So what happens next?"

May you like

Rebecca did not soften the answer.

"They panic."
