Chapter 9 - The Grave Without a Body

Celia Vale's grave stood in the oldest section of Saint Matthew Cemetery.

Arthur visited every year on the anniversary of her death. He brought white roses, stayed exactly eleven minutes, and never allowed anyone to accompany him.

Elena understood the clue.

Daddy never looks.

Arthur looked at the headstone.

He never looked beneath it.

By noon, Mara had obtained an emergency exhumation order. Vanessa's attorneys tried to block it, arguing desecration and insufficient cause. The judge who had favored Vanessa hours earlier abruptly recused himself after investigators discovered payments routed from a Vale subsidiary to his brother.

The grave was opened under a gray sky.

There was no coffin.

Six feet beneath the grass lay a steel case.

Simon covered his mouth.

Arthur had buried an empty coffin twenty-three years earlier without knowing.

The steel case required both pendant halves. Elena and Eve were meant to open it together.

Eve was absent.

Elena used a forensic tool to bridge the magnetic lock. Inside lay a waterproof ledger, three reels of film, and a sealed letter addressed to both daughters.

The ledger contained names.

Government officials.

Corporate executives.

Doctors.

Judges.

Wealthy families who paid to alter heirs, silence witnesses, reshape children, and create perfect infiltrators.

Some subjects had become spouses.

Some assistants.

Some political advisers.

Some had forgotten their original identities entirely.

Vanessa Vale appeared under the code V7.

Her original name was listed as Nadia Soren.

Recruited at age fourteen after surviving a border conflict.

Trained by Daniel Hale.

Assigned to Arthur Vale.

Eve appeared under E2, marked unstable, resistant, and uniquely capable of identity mimicry.

Elena appeared under E1.

Beside her file, Celia had written by hand:

Elena retained empathy. Eve retained memory. Daniel will try to turn one against the other.

Mara closed the ledger. “This could collapse institutions.”

“That is why people have killed for it,” Gabriel said.

Elena opened Celia's letter.

My daughters,

If you are reading this together, then I have been given a miracle I did not deserve. If only one of you is reading, find the other before deciding who she has become.

Daniel believes identity is obedience plus memory. He is wrong. You are more than what was done to you.

Arthur helped build the machine, but he also tried to stop it. Whether you forgive him is not mine to decide.

Do not trust anyone who asks you to hide this ledger.

Not even each other.

The final line had been added in different ink.

The body in my grave is not mine because I did not die in the lake.

Elena read it again.

Simon took the letter, hands shaking.

“Celia survived?”

A gunshot cracked across the cemetery.

The forensic technician beside the grave fell.

Gabriel pushed Elena behind the stone as more shots struck the ground. Mara's officers returned fire toward a maintenance building.

A black van crashed through the side gate.

Masked attackers threw smoke grenades. Visibility vanished.

Elena clutched the ledger beneath her coat.

Someone seized her from behind.

She drove her elbow backward, heard a grunt, and twisted free. A masked woman stood before her.

The woman pulled down her face covering.

Eve.

“Give me the ledger.”

“No.”

“They will take it.”

“Then help me stop them.”

Eve looked past her toward the smoke.

Vanessa emerged near the open grave holding a pistol.

For a second, the two identical faces saw each other.

Vanessa fired.

Eve pulled Elena aside. The bullet struck Celia's headstone.

Gabriel tackled Vanessa, but Julian Crest appeared and shot him in the shoulder. Mara fired at Julian. He disappeared behind the van.

Chaos spread through the cemetery.

Eve grabbed the ledger.

Elena held on.

“You said we should find each other,” Elena shouted. “Here I am.”

Eve's expression twisted between fury and pain.

“You had twenty-three years.”

“I was seven.”

“So was I.”

The words stopped Elena.

Eve released the ledger.

Then she shoved Elena down as another bullet passed over them.

Police sirens approached from the road.

The attackers retreated.

Vanessa escaped in the van with Julian. Gabriel remained conscious, bleeding heavily. Three officers were injured. The forensic technician died before the ambulance arrived.

Eve vanished again.

But she left half of her pendant in Elena's hand.

At the hospital, doctors operated on Gabriel. Arthur had been moved to a secure federal facility, where his condition worsened.

Elena sat outside surgery with the ledger on her lap.

Mara joined her.

“We can place this into evidence tonight,” the detective said. “Once we do, it becomes part of a federal case.”

“And then?”

“Some names will be protected. Some pages will be classified. Some people will argue disclosure would damage national security.”

“In other words, it disappears.”

Mara did not deny it.

Simon approached with new forensic results from Celia's supposed drowning.

Dental records used to identify the recovered body had been falsified.

The body belonged to another woman.

A Meridian nurse named Rebecca Soren.

Vanessa's mother.

Elena looked at the name.

Nadia Soren.

Vanessa had married Arthur while knowing her own mother had been placed in Celia's grave.

The conspiracy was not only professional.

It was personal.

Arthur's signature had started a war between daughters, widows, and ghosts.

And somewhere, Celia Vale might still be alive.
