Chapter 13 - Eight Minutes to Wake the World

The laboratory sealed.
Steel doors locked behind Elena. Vanessa stood on the opposite side of the control platform while the synchronization timer fell below eight minutes.
Monitors showed emergency networks in twelve countries. Hospital systems. Public alert channels. Military communications. Transportation hubs.
Genesis had been hidden inside infrastructure Vale Meridian built.
Arthur's empire was the transmitter.
Elena fired at the control panel.
The glass resisted the bullet.
Vanessa ducked behind a console and laughed. “Daniel planned for anger.”
Elena pressed her communication device, but the jammer remained active.
She had the counter-sequence on a digital copy, but no access to the central system.
Vanessa held up a small drive.
“The master key.”
“Give it to me.”
“You still think people give things because you ask correctly.”
Vanessa inserted the drive.
The timer dropped to six minutes.
Elena searched the laboratory. Old medical chairs faced a circular wall of speakers. Labels identified frequencies tied to fear, attachment, compliance, and memory disruption.
A child's drawing remained taped beneath one console.
Two girls holding hands beside a lake.
Elena pulled it free.
On the back, a sequence of numbers had been written in crayon.
Her handwriting.
Eve had retained memory.
Elena had retained patterns.
She entered the numbers into a maintenance terminal.
A hidden administrator window opened.
Vanessa's smile vanished.
“What did you do?”
“I remembered differently.”
Elena uploaded the counter-sequence.
ACCESS DENIED.
Dual authorization required.
Two subject signatures.
E1 and E2.
Eve had to join her.
The laboratory door shook under gunfire from the corridor. Gabriel and Mara were trying to breach it.
Vanessa ran toward Elena with the knife.
They collided against the console.
Vanessa fought with practiced precision, targeting Elena's injured shoulder and throat. Elena fought with desperation. She blocked the knife, drove Vanessa into the glass, and tore the master drive from the port.
Vanessa struck her across the face.
“You lived my life,” Vanessa hissed. “The wealthy father. The protected name. The world calling you innocent.”
“You chose to become him.”
“I chose to survive.”
“So did Eve.”
Vanessa hesitated.
Elena used the moment to throw her backward.
The door opened enough for Eve to crawl beneath it.
Smoke followed her into the room.
The timer showed three minutes.
Elena pointed to the terminal. “It needs both of us.”
Eve looked at Vanessa, then at the screen.
“What happens if we authorize?”
“The counter-sequence broadcasts through the same network.”
“And the subjects?”
“They wake up.”
“Or break.”
Elena did not lie. “Yes.”
Eve approached the scanner.
Vanessa grabbed a pistol from beneath the console.
Celia fired through the gap in the door.
The bullet struck Vanessa's arm. The pistol fell.
Celia entered with Arthur supported between Gabriel and Simon. Arthur should not have been standing. Every step looked borrowed from death.
He saw the countdown.
“Use my access,” he said.
“It needs subject signatures,” Elena replied.
Arthur looked at Eve.
“I am sorry.”
Eve stared at him. “Which daughter did you think you saved?”
Arthur's face collapsed.
“I told myself it was Elena.”
“Why?”
“Because she needed me. You looked back at the fire as if you already knew I would leave you.”
Eve's eyes filled.
The timer reached ninety seconds.
Elena placed her palm on the first scanner.
“Eve.”
Eve did not move.
Vanessa, bleeding beside the wall, whispered, “Do not help them. They will put you in a cage.”
“They already did,” Eve said.
She placed her palm on the second scanner.
The system recognized both.
COUNTER-SEQUENCE READY.
A final question appeared.
RELEASE ALL SUBJECT MEMORY ARCHIVES?
YES / NO.
Celia stepped forward. “No. Some memories may destroy them.”
Arthur said, “They deserve the truth.”
Mara said, “This is not a decision any of us can make for thousands of people.”
The timer reached forty seconds.
Elena looked at Eve.
Eve had lived with every memory.
Elena had lived without half of hers.
Neither condition was freedom.
“Broadcast the release tone,” Elena said. “Do not force the archives. Make them available by consent.”
The system requested confirmation.
Eve pressed YES.
Elena pressed YES.
At eight seconds, the counter-sequence entered the network.
Across the monitors, activation signals reversed.
Hospital alarms changed tone.
Emergency broadcasts shifted frequency.
Thousands of hidden subjects heard a melody many had forgotten but their bodies recognized.
The countdown reached zero.
Nothing exploded.
No lights failed.
The world continued.
Then messages began appearing.
SUBJECT V12 REQUESTING IDENTITY FILE.
SUBJECT K4 REPORTING HANDLER.
SUBJECT R19 SAFE.
Hundreds.
Then thousands.
Daniel's network began exposing itself from within.
Vanessa slid down the wall.
“You do not understand what you released.”
“No,” Elena said. “But you do.”
Federal agents entered and restrained Vanessa.
Arthur collapsed into Gabriel's arms.
Celia knelt beside him.
For a moment, they looked like the married couple they had once been, surrounded by the ruins of everything they built and failed to stop.
Arthur touched her face.
“I looked for you.”
“Not long enough.”
“I know.”
His eyes shifted toward Elena and Eve.
“My daughters.”
Eve turned away.
Elena crouched beside him.
Arthur's breathing slowed.
“Do not die yet,” she said. “You still owe us the truth.”
A faint smile touched his mouth.
“There is more.”
“Where?”
He whispered, “The first ledger was not Celia's.”
His pulse weakened.
Doctors rushed in.
As they carried him away, the central system displayed a final incoming message.
It came from an unknown Genesis node.
