Chapter 8 - behind the wine rack

Marcus called the police.
Emily refused to wait.
The main cellar entrance had been widened during her rehabilitation, allowing the wheelchair to pass. The lights flickered as Emily descended on the platform lift, Marcus beside her and Evelyn following with a flashlight.
Lily remained upstairs with an officer stationed at the door.
The cellar smelled of damp stone and old oak.
Rows of bottles lined the walls.
At the far end, one rack stood slightly crooked.
Emily pointed.
“That one.”
Marcus pulled it forward.
The rack moved silently on concealed tracks.
Behind it was a narrow corridor.
Fresh footprints marked the dust.
Shiny black shoes.
They followed the corridor to a steel door.
The door was open.
Inside, a private terminal glowed beside an empty cabinet.
Nolan Pierce stood before it.
He did not run.
“You are persistent,” he said.
Marcus raised his phone.
“The police are on their way.”
“They were on their way the last time.”
Emily scanned the room.
The brass key rested inside the terminal lock. Beside it was the leather notebook from Thomas’s wooden box.
“Step away,” she said.
Nolan smiled.
“You speak as if this still belongs to you.”
“It does.”
“Ownership is a story written by the person holding the correct paper.”
“And you think you have it?”
“I have enough.”
The terminal showed a transfer request from Thomas’s reserve account.
Beneficiary authorization required.
Elias Hart’s name appeared on the screen.
“Who is Elias?” Emily asked.
Nolan closed the window.
“Someone Thomas protected more carefully than he protected you.”
“His son?”
“You should ask Madison.”
“She asked Elias to prove it. That means she does not know.”
Nolan’s smile faded.
Emily continued.
“You used her. You told her Lily stood between her and the reserve. You helped her file for custody. You restored Thomas’s credentials.”
“You are making assumptions.”
“And you edited the driveway recording.”
“That would be a serious accusation.”
“The original memory card shows you at the scene.”
He looked at her sharply.
“You do not have the original.”
“Lily took it from the hospital drawer.”
For the first time, Nolan lost control.
He stepped toward her.
Marcus moved between them.
Nolan stopped.
“That child has no idea what she touched.”
“She knows enough to be afraid of you.”
“She should be afraid of the people you trust.”
“Did you cause my accident?”
“No.”
“Did Madison?”
“No.”
“Then who was wearing your shoes?”
Nolan looked down.
The same distinctive seam crossed the leather.
Emily noticed a faint pale mark near his right ankle.
On the video, the hooded figure had dragged one foot slightly after the missing section.
Nolan followed her gaze.
“I arrived after you fell.”
“Madison arrived after you.”
“She called me.”
“Why?”
“To retrieve documents before the police secured the property.”
“You left me on the ground.”
“You were breathing.”
Marcus’s expression hardened.
“You removed evidence from an accident scene.”
“I protected company information.”
Emily stared at him.
“What was in the folder?”
Nolan glanced at the leather notebook.
“Thomas’s final ledger.”
“Final before his death?”
A strange silence followed.
Emily heard police voices entering the cellar above.
Nolan removed the brass key from the terminal.
“Tell me where Elias is,” Emily said.
“You are asking the wrong question.”
“What should I ask?”
“Ask why Thomas created a beneficiary with no legal identity.”
“Because Elias is hidden.”
“No.”
Nolan placed the key in his pocket.
“Because Elias is not a person.”
The police entered the corridor.
Nolan lifted his hands.
An officer took the key and notebook.
As he was led away, Nolan looked at Emily.
“Elias is a door. And Madison has already opened it.”
The terminal behind him suddenly activated.
A file began downloading automatically.
