Chapter 12 - madison’s bargain
Madison asked to speak with Emily privately.
The police refused.
Marcus arranged a controlled interview at the station with officers present. Emily sat across from Madison while Lily remained safely with Rosa, who had returned the moment she learned what had happened.
Madison no longer looked furious.
She looked exhausted.
“Start with Elias,” Emily said.
Madison stared at the table.
“Elias contacted me two months ago.”
“How?”
“A letter arrived inside Thomas’s wooden box.”
“Who delivered it?”
“Nolan.”
“What did the letter say?”
“That Thomas had created a security protocol before his death. It claimed someone would attempt to take control of Hart Meridian through Lily’s beneficiary status.”
“Why Lily?”
“Because the reserve account responds to her legal identity.”
Emily waited.
Madison continued reluctantly.
“Elias said Lily’s adoption file contained an access sequence. Thomas concealed part of it inside the sealed letter he wrote to her.”
The missing letter.
“Nolan told you to take Lily?”
“He said the safest option was to reverse the adoption temporarily before Elias activated.”
“You told her she was unwanted.”
“I needed her to agree to leave.”
“She is six.”
“I did not know how far this had gone.”
“You packed her suitcase.”
“I thought the agency would keep her safe for a few days.”
“You tried to put me in a medical facility.”
“Cole said you were in danger at the house.”
“From whom?”
“From the man in the blue cap.”
Emily leaned forward.
“Who is he?”
“I thought he was Thomas.”
The room became silent.
“You spoke to him.”
“He never showed me his full face. He knew things only Thomas should know. He had Thomas’s watch. His voice was different, but he said the crash damaged his throat.”
“And you believed him?”
“I wanted to.”
“What did he ask you to do?”
“Find the brass key. Remove the adoption letter. Restore his access to the archive.”
“You helped a stranger enter forty-eight million dollars of protected assets.”
“He said the money was never meant for us.”
“Who was it meant for?”
“Elias.”
“You said Elias was not a person.”
“Nolan said that after you found the terminal.”
“What did he tell you before?”
“That Elias was Thomas’s first son.”
Emily’s stomach tightened.
“Did Thomas have a son?”
“I don’t know.”
“You accused Lily of replacing real children without knowing whether those children existed.”
Madison looked down.
“I hated how easily Thomas built a family with you. After our father died, Thomas controlled everything. I spent my entire life being told to wait, obey, and trust him. Then he died and left another secret.”
“That does not excuse what you did.”
“No.”
The word came quietly.
It was the first honest thing Madison had said.
Emily placed a photograph on the table.
The enlarged hospital image showed the man in the blue cap.
“Where did you meet him?”
“An abandoned Hart Meridian warehouse near the river.”
“When?”
“Three times.”
“Did Nolan attend?”
“The first time.”
“Did Cole?”
Madison’s eyes rose.
“Cole was the man who introduced us.”
Emily looked toward Marcus.
The chain was complete.
Cole controlled the false medical records.
Nolan controlled the hidden accounts.
Madison controlled access to the house and Lily.
But the man in the blue cap controlled all three.
“Why did you go to the house this morning?” Emily asked.
“I received another message.”
“What did it say?”
Madison swallowed.
“That Elias was awake.”
“What does that mean?”
“I don’t know.”
“Show me the message.”
“My phone was taken.”
An officer placed the device in an evidence bag on the table.
The screen lit up.
A new message appeared from an unknown number.
YOU FAILED TO DELIVER THE CHILD.
A second message followed.
WE WILL COLLECT THE KEY SHE CARRIES.
Emily’s blood went cold.
“What key?”
Madison looked at her.
“Not the brass one.”
“Then what?”
“The adoption letter was never the access sequence.”
