Chapter 14 - BENEFICIARY NINE

Evelyn answered the telephone.
No distorted voice greeted her this time.
Instead, a recording of Charles Vale began playing.
“If the will has been recovered, Helena has failed.”
The message was clearer than the earlier video, as if it had been waiting on an independent line untouched by the mansion’s network.
“Evelyn, you may believe the foundation is yours now. Legally, it is. But the foundation’s public accounts represent less than half of the Vale assets.”
Adrian closed the hidden room door behind them.
Only Evelyn, Julian, Katherine, Celeste, Jonah, and Adrian remained inside.
Charles continued.
“Beneficiary Nine controls a private reserve established before the foundation became public. The reserve was intended to protect medical research, witnesses, and families endangered by Vale operations.”
Katherine lowered her head.
“Over time, someone changed its purpose. Money was used to silence investigators, purchase court decisions, and erase identities.”
The telephone clicked.
Another recording began.
This voice belonged to a woman.
Katherine.
But younger.
“If you hear this, Charles did not succeed in shutting the reserve down.”
The Katherine standing inside the room stared at the telephone.
“I don’t remember making this.”
The younger voice continued.
“There are nine beneficiary designations, but only one is active at a time. The active beneficiary can authorize transfers without board approval.”
Julian looked at Evelyn.
“Who is active now?”
The recording answered him.
“Beneficiary Nine is not a person. It is a position.”
Jonah examined the old telephone wiring.
“No external connection. The recordings were triggered locally when the handset was lifted.”
Charles’s voice returned.
“The identity is passed through a physical token marked with the black Vale crest.”
Everyone looked at the signet ring.
It lay inside an evidence bag on the desk.
“The ring,” Celeste whispered.
Charles continued.
“The person wearing it may appear to control the reserve. Do not be deceived. The ring is only a key. The true authority belongs to whoever possesses the original ledger.”
“What ledger?” Adrian asked.
The message could not answer him.
Katherine crossed toward a metal cabinet.
“Charles kept account books in here.”
The cabinet was empty except for a rectangular indentation in the dust.
Something large had been removed recently.
Evelyn remembered the tablet stolen during the blackout, the missing ring, and the person who entered the hidden room after Marcus’s arrest.
While everyone watched the will, someone had taken the original ledger.
Jonah checked the duplicate security feed.
At 10:42 p.m., a figure entered the library wearing a police jacket.
The face was hidden beneath a cap.
The figure knew the exact location of the secret release behind the portrait.
“Only seven people knew how to open it,” Jonah said.
“Eight,” Katherine replied. “Anna knew.”
“Anna may be dead.”
“She may also be inside Valecrest.”
Evelyn looked through the hidden room’s old files.
Beneath the desk, she found a recent photograph taped to the wood.
It showed a hospital room.
A woman lay asleep beneath white sheets.
The date in the corner was six days earlier.
The woman was Anna Mercer.
Alive.
On the back, someone had written:
THE WITNESS HAS ONE FINAL TESTIMONY.
Katherine gripped the photograph.
“I know that hospital.”
“Where?” Evelyn asked.
“Saint Orison.”
The same private institution where Katherine had been hidden for years.
Jonah contacted the local police unit nearest the facility.
The response arrived five minutes later.
Saint Orison had closed eighteen months earlier.
The building was officially empty.
Yet satellite electricity records showed active power usage every night.
Evelyn wanted to leave immediately.
Adrian stopped her.
“It may be a trap.”
“Everything has been a trap.”
“You were nearly pushed down the stairs.”
“And Anna may be held inside the place that stole twenty years from my mother.”
Katherine looked at Evelyn.
“You do not owe Anna your life.”
“No. But Father owed her the truth. So do we.”
Before they could depart, a detective entered the library.
“Mrs. Vale has agreed to provide a statement.”
“Helena?” Julian asked.
“She says she will identify Beneficiary Nine.”
They found Helena seated in the drawing room with her attorney.
Her wrists were not cuffed, but two officers stood behind her.
“I want immunity,” Helena said.
“You won’t receive it,” Adrian replied.
“Then I will say nothing.”
Katherine approached her.
“You took my daughter.”
Helena met her eyes.
“I saved Celeste from the people who wanted both of you dead.”
“You erased her name.”
“I gave her a life.”
“You gave her orders.”
Helena looked toward Celeste.
“I taught you to survive.”
Celeste placed the forged goddaughter documents on the table.
“You taught me to obey.”
For the first time, Helena’s face showed regret.
It vanished quickly.
“The active Beneficiary Nine is chosen whenever the previous holder dies or resigns,” she said.
“Who chose the current one?” Evelyn asked.
“Charles.”
The room went silent.
“My father tried to stop the reserve,” Evelyn said.
“He tried to control it from within.”
“Who did he appoint?”
Helena’s gaze moved from Evelyn to Julian, then to Celeste.
“Someone he believed would never betray his children.”
“Who?”
Helena smiled faintly.
May you like
“The man who has been standing beside Evelyn since this began.”
Every face turned toward Adrian.
