THE SIGNAL BEFORE THE FALL / Chapter 10 / 15

Chapter 10 - THE MAN WEARING CHARLES VALE’S RING

Charles Vale’s signet ring had disappeared after his death.

Helena claimed it was lost in the mountain crash. Julian remembered searching the recovered personal effects and finding only Charles’s watch, wallet, and wedding band.

Yet the ring in the footage was unmistakable.

Black stone.

Silver crest.

A thin fracture across the letter V.

Jonah ordered every male guest to show both hands.

None wore it.

He repeated the request with the staff.

Again, nothing.

“The person removed it during the blackout,” Adrian said.

“Or wore it beneath a glove,” Jonah replied.

Evelyn remained seated at the foot of the staircase while paramedics examined her. She had a bruised shoulder and mild dizziness, but no serious injury.

She refused to leave for the hospital.

“The person who pushed Celeste is still inside,” she said.

“And may try again,” Adrian replied.

“That is why I’m staying where everyone can see me.”

Helena crossed the foyer.

“You have made your point, Evelyn. The gala is over.”

“No one leaves.”

“You cannot imprison two hundred guests.”

“Jonah can delay them while the police arrive.”

At the word police, several trustees became visibly uneasy.

Helena noticed.

“This family has suffered enough public humiliation.”

“My mother suffered in private. My father died in private. I nearly fell in front of a room full of witnesses, and you are still worried about humiliation.”

Helena’s voice dropped.

“You do not understand what you are exposing.”

“Then explain it.”

“Not here.”

“Here is exactly where you planned to destroy me.”

A detective team arrived through the east entrance.

While officers collected statements, Jonah reviewed the duplicate footage from the blackout.

At 9:14 p.m., the lights failed.

At 9:14 and seven seconds, a figure crossed from behind Helena toward the service corridor.

At 9:14 and twelve seconds, the figure entered the old dumbwaiter passage.

At 9:14 and twenty-one seconds, the original system restarted.

No camera covered the interior of the passage.

Mrs. Greer provided a list of people who knew it existed.

Helena.

Julian.

Celeste.

Evelyn.

Three senior staff members.

And Marcus Vale, Charles’s younger half brother.

Evelyn turned toward the guest list.

“Marcus is here?”

Helena looked away.

Marcus Vale had vanished from the family’s public life after Charles’s death. He lived in Singapore and rarely attended foundation events.

His name did not appear on the printed list.

Yet Jonah found a digital entry added two hours before the gala under the title Special Trustee Guest.

The authorization came from Helena’s account.

“I did not add him,” Helena said.

Celeste gave a humorless laugh.

“Someone using your credentials again?”

Helena ignored her.

“Marcus contacted me last week. He said he had information about Charles.”

“What information?” Evelyn asked.

“He claimed Charles gave him the ring before the accident.”

“Did you believe him?”

“I believed he wanted money.”

“And did you invite him?”

“No.”

Jonah searched the mansion.

Marcus was not found.

But a black coat remained in an upstairs guest room. Inside the pocket lay a passport in Marcus Vale’s name and a handwritten card bearing tonight’s date.

The card read:

When Evelyn falls, retrieve the will from the camera before Adrian reaches her.

Adrian studied the message.

“They expected me to run toward you.”

“Which I did,” he said.

“And while everyone watched the stairs, someone removed the will.”

Jonah immediately climbed to the original staircase camera.

Its casing had been opened.

Inside was an empty metal compartment.

A strip of old paper remained caught beneath one screw.

The second will had been there.

Someone had taken it during the blackout.

On the back of the paper, Charles Vale had written a sentence in pencil.

The witness is not Anna.

Evelyn looked toward the crowd.

Anna Mercer still stood behind the pillar.

This time, she did not run.

She walked forward slowly.

“My name is not Anna Mercer,” she said.

Helena stepped back.

The woman removed the catering cap.

May you like

“My name is Katherine Vale.”

Evelyn’s mother had come home.
