Chapter 2 - The Hospital Door)

Sienna had imagined the birth of her second child a hundred different ways.

None of those versions included her husband being barred from the maternity floor by hospital security.

Nico's SUV reached St. Anne's Medical Center eleven minutes after leaving the underground garage.

Sienna's contractions were less than four minutes apart.

Mila sat beside her in the back seat, one hand wrapped around Sienna's fingers.

"Is the baby coming right now?"

"Not right now."

"Are you sure?"

"No."

Mila considered that.

"Okay."

Nico almost smiled.

Sienna managed a weak laugh before another contraction took her breath away.

At the emergency maternity entrance, nurses brought out a wheelchair.

Sienna refused it at first.

Then another contraction convinced her otherwise.

While she was being checked in, Nico gave one quiet instruction to the hospital's security desk.

"Gavin Cole and Marjorie Cole are not permitted into my daughter's room without her direct consent."

The nurse looked at Sienna.

"Is that what you want?"

Sienna's instincts almost betrayed her.

Eight years of marriage had trained her to manage Gavin's moods.

Avoid humiliating him.

Avoid provoking his mother.

Avoid making a private disagreement public.

Then she remembered him reaching for Mila.

She remembered his panic when the recording began.

"Yes."

The nurse entered the restriction.

Mila was taken upstairs with Nico while doctors examined Sienna.

She was five centimeters dilated.

The baby's heartbeat was strong.

Labor was progressing quickly.

Dr. Elena Hart, the obstetrician covering that evening, studied Sienna's face after the examination.

"Your blood pressure is elevated. Not dangerous yet, but I want you calm."

Sienna nearly laughed.

"I'll try."

Dr. Hart noticed the bruise beginning to appear near Sienna's upper arm.

"Did somebody do that?"

Sienna looked down.

Marjorie's fingers.

The garage.

"I was grabbed."

"By whom?"

"My mother-in-law."

Dr. Hart pulled a stool closer.

"Do you feel safe going home after delivery?"

Sienna opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

She had spent years believing that danger had to look dramatic.

Broken bones.

Police.

A neighbor calling for help.

She had never thought of danger as passwords Gavin changed without telling her, financial documents placed in front of her while she was tired, threats disguised as jokes, or Marjorie teaching Mila that a "good girl" did not contradict adults.

She had never thought of Gavin's habit of standing in doorways during arguments as intimidation.

Until now.

"No," she said.

The word felt strange.

Then solid.

"No. I don't."

Dr. Hart nodded.

"We can help with that."

Outside the room, Gavin arrived.

Sienna knew because his voice echoed through the hallway.

"That's my wife!"

A security officer answered calmly.

"Sir, she has asked that you not be admitted."

"You can't keep me from my child."

"Your wife is the patient."

"My baby is being born."

"And the patient has made her wishes clear."

Sienna closed her eyes.

A few seconds later, Gavin's fist struck something hard outside.

Probably a wall.

Mila ran into the room.

She had heard him.

Nico came behind her.

"Grandpa says Daddy can't come in."

Sienna glanced at her father.

Nico said, "Only if you want him here."

She shook her head.

Mila climbed onto a chair.

For the next hour, labor intensified.

Between contractions, Sienna watched her daughter.

Mila was trying to be brave.

Too brave.

Her shoulders were stiff.

Her fingers stayed tightly interlocked.

Sienna knew that posture.

She had worn it herself for years.

"Mila."

The little girl looked up.

"Come here."

Mila came to the bedside.

Sienna took both of her hands.

"You did something very brave today."

Mila's eyes filled.

"I wasn't supposed to listen."

"That doesn't matter."

"Daddy says listening to grown-ups is spying."

"What made you start recording?"

Mila looked toward Nico.

Nico remained quiet.

Mila whispered, "Grandma said they had to make you sign before the baby came. Daddy said you were getting suspicious."

Sienna's stomach turned.

"What did they want me to sign?"

"I don't know."

"Did you hear anything else?"

Mila nodded.

"A lot."

Sienna looked at Nico.

"Have you listened?"

"Not yet."

"Why?"

"Because you were having a baby."

Despite everything, Sienna smiled faintly.

"Reasonable."

Nico sat beside her.

"When you are ready, we listen together."

A nurse entered to check the monitor.

At 8:46 p.m., Sienna's labor moved into its final stage.

Mila waited with Nico in the family room down the hall.

Gavin remained somewhere below, furious and powerless.

At 9:22 p.m., Sienna heard the cry of her son.

Everything else disappeared.

The fear.

The garage.

The recording.

The shouting.

For several minutes there was only a warm, slippery little body against her chest and the astonishing sight of a tiny face she had imagined for months.

He had dark hair.

A small crease above his nose.

Long fingers.

He stopped crying when Sienna spoke.

"Hello, baby."

She cried then.

Not from fear.

Not from pain.

From relief.

A nurse asked, "Does he have a name?"

Sienna had discussed names with Gavin.

He had insisted the boy should be Gavin Cole Junior.

She had never liked it.

She looked down at her son.

"Leo."

The name came from nowhere and felt immediately correct.

"Leo Ferrante."

The nurse paused.

"Ferrante?"

"My name."

It was the first decision of her new life.

When Mila entered, she climbed carefully beside her mother and stared at her brother.

"He's tiny."

"He is."

"He looks mad."

"He had a difficult evening."

Mila touched one of Leo's toes.

Then her face changed.

"Mom?"

"Yes?"

"Is Daddy going to take him?"

Sienna froze.

"Why would you ask that?"

Mila looked at Nico.

Nico's expression hardened.

"Mila," Sienna said gently, "what did you hear?"

Mila whispered, "Daddy told Grandma that after the hospital, the baby wouldn't be your problem anymore."

Sienna's arms tightened around Leo.

Nico stood.

"Where is the phone?"

"In my jacket."

"Bring it."

Mila retrieved it.

Nico closed the hospital room door.

Sienna adjusted Leo against her chest.

"Play everything."

Nico opened the recording.

The first file lasted fourteen minutes.

Mila had accidentally captured it while hiding beneath the kitchen table that morning.

The voices began.

Marjorie.

"You waited too long."

Gavin.

"She wouldn't sign."

"Then use the hospital."

"How?"

"We've already discussed this."

Sienna stopped breathing.

Gavin again.

"The psychiatric evaluation?"

Marjorie answered.

"Postpartum confusion. Emotional instability. Your attorney said temporary emergency guardianship is possible if there is evidence she's unsafe."

Sienna felt cold despite the warm hospital room.

The recording continued.

Gavin said, "Once Sienna gets to the hospital, we have her sign the revised trust paperwork while she's medicated. If she refuses, we trigger the incapacity plan."

Marjorie laughed.

"And once you have control of the Ferrante shares, she can scream as much as she likes."

Nico's face became stone.

Sienna stared at him.

The Ferrante shares.

There it was.

Her grandfather had left her twenty-two percent of Ferrante Development, the family construction and property company.

The shares were worth millions.

They were protected by a trust.

Gavin had spent three years encouraging Sienna to "simplify" them.

She had always refused.

The recording continued.

Then came the sentence Mila remembered.

"Once Sienna gets to the hospital, we separate the baby from her long enough to document instability."

Gavin sounded uncertain.

"What about Mila?"

Marjorie answered immediately.

"Mila goes with you. No judge leaves children with a hysterical woman."

There was silence on the recording.

Then Gavin asked the question that destroyed the last fragment of Sienna's marriage.

"And if she fights?"

Marjorie said, "Then make sure she looks dangerous when she does."

Nico stopped the audio.

Nobody moved.

Mila began crying quietly.

Sienna pulled her daughter against the bed with one arm while holding Leo with the other.

Nico took the phone.

"I need to call someone."

"Who?"

"Our attorney."

Sienna looked at him.

"No."

Nico paused.

"No?"

"Not our attorney."

She looked down at Leo.

Then at Mila.

"My attorney."

Something changed in Nico's face.

Not surprise.

Pride.

"All right."

Sienna took a breath.

"And Dad?"

"Yes?"

"I want every account Gavin can access frozen tonight."

Nico nodded once.

"That I can do."

Outside the hospital room, somebody began pounding on the maternity floor doors.

Gavin's voice carried through the corridor.

"Sienna! I know you're listening to me!"

Mila pressed closer.

Gavin shouted again.

"That phone is mine! You can't use it!"

Nico looked toward the door.

Then back at his daughter.

Sienna kissed Mila's hair.

For the first time, she did not feel frightened by Gavin's anger.

May you like

She felt finished with it.

"Let him shout."
