Chapter 10 - Marjorie's Bargain)

Sienna did not allow Marjorie inside.

They met in the security office near the front gate.

Rachel joined by phone.

Nico remained beside Sienna.

Marjorie placed the metal box on the table.

She looked older than she had two weeks earlier.

Her styled hair was still perfect.

Her blouse still expensive.

But the certainty was gone.

"You look tired," Sienna said.

Marjorie smiled coldly.

"You look smug."

"No. Just awake."

Marjorie's eyes narrowed.

"You think you've won."

"I don't think this is a game."

"Everything is a game when money is involved."

Sienna understood suddenly that this was how Marjorie had survived her own life.

Control or be controlled.

Use or be used.

Win or disappear.

Maybe she had learned it from someone else.

It did not excuse what she had done.

Marjorie pushed the box forward.

"Gavin kept records."

"Of what?"

"Red Canyon."

Sienna did not touch it.

"Why bring them to me?"

"Because they will destroy him."

"That still doesn't explain why you're helping me."

Marjorie looked toward Nico.

"I want protection."

Nico laughed softly.

"From your son?"

"From the lenders."

Sienna studied her.

"You told me Gavin owed dangerous people money."

"He does."

"Are they criminals?"

"I don't know."

"Then stop using dramatic language and tell me facts."

Marjorie stared at her.

The old Sienna would never have spoken that way.

Marjorie seemed to realize it.

"Red Canyon uses private investigators. Aggressive collection. They expose people."

"Legal pressure."

"Mostly."

"Mostly?"

Marjorie looked away.

Nico said, "You came here because you're afraid they'll uncover your involvement."

She said nothing.

Sienna pointed to the box.

"What's inside?"

"Copies of Gavin's loan files. Messages. Records."

"Why do you have them?"

"Because I was helping him."

Finally.

No euphemism.

No denial.

Sienna sat back.

"How much did you know?"

Marjorie folded her hands.

"Most of it."

"The stolen Ferrante money?"

"Yes."

"MRJ Advisory?"

"Mine."

"The fake concerns about my mental health?"

Marjorie's mouth tightened.

"I believed you were too emotional to manage the company."

"That wasn't the question."

"Yes."

"North Harbor?"

A pause.

"Yes."

"The plan to separate me from Leo after birth?"

"Temporarily."

Nico took a step forward.

Sienna raised one hand.

He stopped.

She kept her eyes on Marjorie.

"And Mila?"

"Gavin would have taken her."

"You mean you would have helped him take her."

"Until you stabilized."

"I was never unstable."

"You were difficult."

Sienna almost laughed.

"So that was the diagnosis?"

Marjorie did not answer.

Sienna pointed toward the door.

"We're done."

Marjorie gripped the metal box.

"You haven't heard the important part."

"What important part?"

"Gavin lied to me too."

Sienna stood still.

"About what?"

"The money."

"Which money?"

"The first transfer."

"Four point eight million."

"I thought it covered his company."

"It did."

"Not all of it."

Marjorie opened the box.

Inside were paper ledgers.

Printed messages.

A flash drive.

One document had a handwritten column of amounts.

At the bottom was a total.

1,200,000.

Next to it:

E.C.

Sienna looked at Marjorie.

"What is E.C.?"

Marjorie did not answer.

"Evelyn Cole?"

Her face changed.

Sienna felt a chill.

"What did Gavin do to Evelyn?"

"Nothing."

"Then why is her name connected to 1.2 million dollars?"

Marjorie looked toward the camera in the corner of the security office.

"Is this being recorded?"

Nico said, "Yes."

"Turn it off."

"No."

"Then I'm not speaking."

Sienna shrugged.

"Leave."

Marjorie stared at her.

For years she controlled conversations by threatening to withhold something.

Sienna no longer cared.

She walked toward the door.

"Wait."

Sienna stopped.

Marjorie whispered, "Gavin paid her."

"Evelyn?"

"Yes."

"For what?"

"Silence."

Sienna turned slowly.

"About you?"

"No."

"Then what?"

Marjorie's eyes filled with something close to fear.

"About Thomas."

Gavin's father.

The man who had helped confine Evelyn.

"What about him?"

Marjorie looked at Nico.

Then at Sienna.

"His death."

Sienna said nothing.

Thomas Cole had died twelve years earlier from a heart attack.

At least that was the story Gavin told.

Marjorie continued.

"Evelyn believed Gavin caused it."

Nico's voice was quiet.

"Did he?"

"No."

Too fast.

Sienna heard it.

"What happened?"

Marjorie looked at the box.

"Thomas discovered Gavin had been taking money from his business. Small amounts. Gavin was twenty-four."

A pattern older than Sienna.

"They argued."

"Yes."

"And?"

"Thomas collapsed."

"Heart attack."

"Yes."

"Where does Evelyn fit?"

"She was on the phone with Thomas."

Sienna frowned.

"During the argument?"

"Yes."

"What did she hear?"

Marjorie's voice lowered.

"Thomas asking Gavin to call an ambulance."

Sienna stopped breathing.

"Did he?"

"Eventually."

"Eventually?"

Marjorie's hands tightened.

"Fourteen minutes later."

Silence.

Even Nico looked stunned.

Sienna whispered, "Why?"

"Because Gavin searched his father's office first."

"For what?"

"Records of the theft."

Sienna closed her eyes.

A man collapsing.

Asking his son for help.

And Gavin using the time to search documents.

"Did Thomas die because of the delay?"

"I don't know."

"Did Evelyn tell police?"

"She had no proof."

"She had the call."

"It wasn't recorded."

"Then why pay her?"

"Because she threatened to tell Sienna before your wedding."

Sienna's heart stopped.

"Before my wedding?"

Marjorie looked away.

"Gavin paid her."

"Evelyn told me she was threatened at my rehearsal."

"She came for money."

"I don't believe you."

Marjorie's voice sharpened.

"Of course you don't."

Sienna took out her phone.

She called Evelyn.

Marjorie stared.

"What are you doing?"

"Accountability."

Evelyn answered.

"Sienna?"

"Did Gavin pay you 1.2 million dollars?"

Silence.

Sienna's stomach dropped.

"Evelyn?"

"Where did you hear that?"

"Marjorie."

Another silence.

Then Evelyn said, "Yes."

Sienna closed her eyes.

Marjorie smiled faintly.

Triumph.

It lasted three seconds.

Then Evelyn continued.

"He paid me because he stole 1.2 million from the settlement account our father created after North Harbor."

Marjorie's smile disappeared.

Sienna opened her eyes.

"What?"

"Part of my settlement was held in trust until I turned thirty. Gavin accessed it using documents signed by our father before he died."

Marjorie whispered, "That's not true."

Evelyn heard her voice.

"Hello, Mother."

Marjorie went pale.

Evelyn continued.

"I didn't blackmail Gavin. I threatened to sue him."

"Why didn't you?"

"He returned the money."

Sienna stared at Marjorie.

"So you lied."

Marjorie recovered quickly.

"He still delayed calling the ambulance."

Evelyn's voice became quiet.

"That part is true."

Sienna looked at the metal box.

Gavin had stolen from his sister.

Stolen from Sienna.

Stolen from Ferrante Development.

Each time, when discovery approached, he manipulated the person who could expose him.

A pattern.

Not a crisis.

Not one mistake.

A life built on taking and controlling.

Sienna asked Evelyn, "Why didn't you tell me this earlier?"

"I was ashamed."

"Of what?"

"Taking the money back and disappearing."

"It was yours."

"I know that now."

Marjorie stood.

"I brought you evidence."

Sienna faced her.

"You brought me evidence because you realized Gavin might sacrifice you."

Marjorie did not deny it.

"You want protection from him and the lenders."

"Yes."

"And what are you offering?"

"Everything."

Sienna looked at Rachel's image on the phone screen.

Rachel said, "Do not make any promises."

"I won't."

Sienna looked at Marjorie.

"You can give everything to Rachel."

"And my protection?"

"Tell the truth. Get your own lawyer."

Marjorie's face hardened.

"You are ungrateful."

Sienna almost laughed.

"For what?"

"I helped build Gavin."

"Yes."

The words landed harder than Sienna intended.

"You did."

Marjorie stared at her.

For the first time, shame flickered across her face.

Not enough to redeem her.

Enough to prove she understood.

She left the box.

Then she walked out alone.

That night, Rachel examined the flash drive.

One folder was labeled Sienna.

Another Ferrante.

Another Red Canyon.

The final folder had no label.

Inside was a scanned document.

A contract.

Signed eight months earlier.

Between Gavin Cole and a private investigator.

The investigator had been hired to follow Sienna.

But not to investigate infidelity.

Not to document instability.

The instruction page contained one sentence.

Identify daily routines, medical appointments, isolated travel routes, and locations without cameras.

Rachel read it twice.

Then looked at Sienna.

For the first time since taking the case, Rachel looked genuinely frightened.
