Chapter 6 - The Hospital CorridorElena received the call at 2:14 in the morning.

The medical driver explained that a young woman had been found beside the road near the Hale estate.

“She said your name before she lost consciousness.”

Elena was already reaching for her uniform.

“Which hospital?”

“Saint Matthew’s.”

“I’ll meet you there.”

Then the driver said, “Captain, she looks badly hurt.”

Elena stopped breathing for a moment.

“How badly?”

“She’s conscious again, but she’s terrified. She keeps saying her husband is coming.”

Elena called Detective Naomi Brooks while driving.

“I need you at Saint Matthew’s.”

“What happened?”

“It’s Maya.”

Naomi did not ask another question.

Elena reached the hospital before the supply van.

When it arrived, she ran toward the rear doors.

Maya sat against the wall of the vehicle with a blanket around her shoulders.

“Mom?”

Elena climbed inside.

Maya reached for her like a child waking from a nightmare.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered.

Elena held her tightly.

“You have nothing to apologize for.”

“I should have told you.”

“You’re telling me now.”

“He said he would destroy your career.”

“I don’t care about my career.”

“He has files on people. Police officers. Judges. Everyone.”

Elena looked at the bruises visible beneath the blanket.

“Did Tyler do this?”

Maya’s silence was enough.

Elena’s training told her to remain calm, preserve evidence, and avoid promising outcomes.

The mother inside her wanted to drive directly to Tyler’s house.

Instead, she helped Maya from the van and supported her through the emergency entrance.

Doctors and nurses rushed toward them.

The hospital corridor filled with urgent voices.

Maya repeatedly looked over her shoulder.

“Don’t let him take me back.”

“He won’t,” Elena said.

A nurse placed Maya in a wheelchair.

As the medical team prepared to move her, Maya suddenly reached beneath her jacket and removed the black USB drive.

“I took this from his safe.”

Naomi arrived just in time to hear the words.

When she read the label, she froze.

The federal task force had investigated the Hale family for years. Witnesses had disappeared, withdrawn statements, or suddenly claimed they had lied.

Investigators believed Charles and Tyler possessed a private archive containing leverage against dozens of powerful people.

No one had ever found it.

Until now.

Elena sealed the drive inside an evidence bag.

She obtained an emergency warrant using Maya’s statement, visible condition, the illegal surveillance allegations, and the risk that Tyler would destroy evidence.

Within minutes, units surrounded the Hale mansion.

Tyler called Elena directly.

“You’re making a serious mistake.”

Elena activated the recorder.

“My daughter is receiving medical treatment.”

“My wife has emotional problems. I have documents proving it.”

“Documents created before she ever met the doctor who signed them?”

Tyler became silent.

Elena continued.

“You should stop talking until your attorney arrives.”

“You don’t understand who you’re challenging.”

“No,” Elena said. “You don’t understand who escaped from you.”

She ended the call.

Inside the examination room, Maya was finally asleep.

Elena sat beside her bed until Naomi returned with an update.

“We opened the drive.”

“And?”

May you like

Naomi placed a hand on the back of a chair.

“It’s bigger than we imagined.”
