Chapter 1 - The Daughter Who Stopped CallingThree months earlier, Elena Ward had begun to notice that her daughter no longer called her.

At first, the change seemed ordinary.

Maya had recently married Tyler Hale, the youngest executive in one of the wealthiest financial families in Boston. Newly married couples became busy. They traveled, decorated homes, attended dinners, and created routines that did not always leave room for parents.

Elena told herself not to interfere.

Maya was twenty-eight years old. She was intelligent, independent, and successful. Before marrying Tyler, she had worked as a financial analyst at a consulting firm. She had managed her own apartment, her own investments, and her own future.

She did not need her mother watching every decision.

Still, the silence felt wrong.

Before the wedding, Maya had called several times a week. Sometimes she needed advice. Sometimes she wanted to complain about work. Sometimes she simply wanted to talk while driving home.

After the wedding, the calls became shorter.

Then they became scheduled.

Then they stopped.

Elena sent a message one Tuesday morning.

Dinner this week? Just us?

Maya replied seven hours later.

Tyler planned something. Maybe next week.

The following week, Maya cancelled again.

Then again.

When Elena called, Tyler often answered.

“Maya’s sleeping.”

“She’s in the shower.”

“She left her phone downstairs.”

“She’s been overwhelmed lately.”

His voice was always polite.

Too polite.

Elena had questioned enough suspects to recognize rehearsed calm. Tyler never sounded surprised when she called. He always had an immediate explanation, and every explanation ended the conversation before Elena could ask more.

One evening, Elena drove past Maya’s home.

She told herself it was not surveillance. The Hale mansion was only a few minutes away from a case meeting, and she wanted to see whether Maya was home.

The gates were closed.

Security cameras followed Elena’s vehicle as she slowed near the entrance.

She called Maya.

No answer.

She called again.

This time, Tyler answered.

“Captain Ward,” he said warmly. “What a surprise.”

“I’m nearby. I thought I’d stop in.”

“Maya isn’t feeling well.”

“Then I’ll check on her.”

There was a pause.

Only half a second.

But Elena noticed.

“She has a migraine,” Tyler said. “Visitors will make it worse.”

“I’m her mother.”

“And I’m her husband. I’m taking care of her.”

Elena’s hands tightened around the steering wheel.

“Put Maya on the phone.”

“She’s asleep.”

“You said she had a migraine. You didn’t say she was asleep.”

Another pause.

Then Tyler laughed softly.

“You’re interrogating me.”

“I’m asking to speak to my daughter.”

The line went silent.

A minute later, Maya called from her own phone.

“Mom, I’m fine.”

Her voice sounded distant.

“You don’t sound fine.”

“I’m tired.”

“Open the gate.”

“I can’t.”

Elena looked toward the mansion.

“Why not?”

“Tyler’s right. I need to rest.”

“Did he tell you to say that?”

“No.”

The answer came too quickly.

Elena closed her eyes.

“Maya, are you safe?”

For several seconds, her daughter said nothing.

Then Tyler’s voice sounded faintly in the background.

Maya immediately replied, “Of course I’m safe.”

The call ended.

Elena remained outside the gate for another ten minutes.

She wanted to force her way inside. She wanted to call for backup and demand to see Maya.

But instinct was not evidence.

And Tyler Hale had lawyers powerful enough to turn an unnecessary welfare check into a public scandal.

As Elena finally drove away, she looked in her mirror.

For one brief moment, she thought she saw Maya standing behind an upstairs window.

Then the curtains closed.
